Srinagar: Indian Army troops thwarted an infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Keri sector of Rajouri district late Tuesday night, official sources said.

According to defense sources, soldiers noticed suspicious movement near the zero line and immediately opened fire, forcing the suspected infiltrators to retreat.

While the Army has not officially confirmed the infiltration bid, it acknowledged that some rounds were fired by troops stationed in the sector.

Keri has been a known infiltration route in the past. However, improved surveillance and fencing have significantly reduced successful crossings, with several previous attempts being foiled or resulting in casualties among infiltrators.

This latest incident comes just weeks after India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire, following a brief but intense armed exchange in the wake of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 25 tourists and a local pony operator. India had responded with cross-border precision strikes under ‘Operation Sindoor’, which was followed by retaliatory drone and missile attacks from Pakistan.

Congress retaliates, slams Modi govt for ‘Undeclared Emergency’ in country for past 11 years

“Indian democracy has been under a systematic and dangerous five-fold assault that can be best described as Undeclared Emergency,” says Ramesh

Retaliating with a scathing attack on the Narendra Modi government, opposition Congress on Wednesday alleged that over the past 11 years, Indian democracy has been under a “systematic and dangerous five-fold assault that can be best described as ‘Undeclared Emergency’.”

The Congress party accused PM Modi of “seeking mandate for new Constitution”, “weakening Parliament”, “eroding autonomy of Constitutional bodies,” “destroying state centre relations,” damaging judiciary”, “tax terrorism and intimidation of businesses and institutions,” “control over media” “rampant misuse of investigative agencies” and “unbridled hate speech and crack down of civil liberties” to claim “undeclared emergency” in the country

In his statement, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh alleged that government critics were routinely “vilified” and “hate, bigotry deliberately spread by the ruling establishment,” “protesting farmers labelled ‘Khalistanis,’ and advocates of caste census dismissed as “urban Naxals”.

“The killers of Mahatma Gandhi are glorified, minorities live in fear of their lives and property, dalits and other marginalised groups have been disproportionately targeted, and ministers making hate speeches have been rewarded with promotions,” he said on a day the BJP-led NDA government is observing ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ to mark the anniversary of imposition of Emergency by the then Indira Gandhi government in 1975.

“Over the past eleven years and thirty days, Indian democracy has been under a systematic and dangerous five-fold assault that can be best described as Undeclared Emergency@11,” he said.

Emergency: PM Modi calls it “one of the darkest chapters in the nation’s history”

June 25 is observed as ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ — a day when fundamental rights were suspended, press freedom extinguished, and countless political leaders, social workers, students, and ordinary citizens were imprisoned—he said

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday launched a scathing attack against the Congress party for the 1975 Emergency imposed by the then PM Indira Gandhi, calling it “one of the darkest chapters in the nation’s history” and a “grave assault on Constitutional values”

Paying tributes to “Indians who stood tall in defence of democracy during one of the darkest chapters in the nation’s history” which he termed as “grave assault on constitutional values,” the Prime Minister said June 25 is observed as ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ — “a day when fundamental rights were suspended, press freedom extinguished, and countless political leaders, social workers, students, and ordinary citizens were imprisoned”

He reiterated commitment to strengthen the principles in the Constitution and working together for the vision of a Viksit Bharat and called the anti-Emergency movement a “learning experience, which reaffirmed the vitality of preserving our democratic framework”.

Recalling his experiences as a young RSS Pracharak, he said the anti-Emergency movement was a learning experience for him. “It reaffirmed the vitality of preserving our democratic framework. At the same time, I got to learn so much from people across the political spectrum. I am glad that BlueKraft Digital Foundation has compiled some of those experiences in the form of a book, whose foreword has been penned by Shri HD Deve Gowda Ji, himself a stalwart of the anti-Emergency movement,” he said in a post on X

The Pm also called upon all those who remember those “dark days of the Emergency or those whose families suffered during that time to share their experiences on social media to create awareness among the youth of the shameful time from 1975 to 1977.”

“On this day, the values enshrined in the Indian Constitution were set aside, fundamental rights were suspended, press freedom was extinguished and several political leaders, social workers, students and ordinary citizens were jailed. It was as if the Congress Government in power at that time placed democracy under arrest!

“No Indian will ever forget the manner in which the spirit of our Constitution was violated, the voice of Parliament muzzled and attempts were made to control the courts. The 42nd Amendment is a prime example of their shenanigans.

Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday also slammed the Congress on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the Emergency,  asserting that people of India will “never accept dictatorship”.

“India overcame that dark chapter because the nation never bows down to dictatorship,” he said, slamming the Opposition, particularly the Congress party, for accusing the ruling dispensation of disregarding the sanctity of the Constitution. “The party that now calls for protecting the Constitution was the one that murdered democracy,” he said, speaking at an event organised by the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Foundation to mark the 50th anniversary of Emergency imposed by the then Congress government led by Indira Gandhi

“Remember the morning when Indira Gandhi announced the Emergency on All India Radio. Was Parliament consulted before this? Were the opposition leaders and citizens taken into confidence…Those who talk about protecting democracy today — were you ‘rakshaks’ (protectors) of the Constitution back then, or its ‘bhakshaks’ (destroyers),” Shah said.

Emergency was imposed in the country on June 25, 1975, after which several opposition leaders were imprisoned, and fundamental rights, including the right to free speech under Article 19(1)(a), suspended. Curbs were also put on the media, and freedom of the press was restricted. Gandhi invoked special constitutional powers to declare Emergency which remained in effect from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977, and is seen as one of the darkest periods in India’s history. It also changed the face of Indian politics.

When Emergency was lifted, the people of India elected the country’s first non-Congress government at the Centre and the Congress lost dominance as a top political party

India opens doors to global EV giants

Global electric vehicle (EV) giants can now apply for a scheme to promote manufacturing of electric passenger cars in India, offering  significantly lower import tax for automakers that pledge to invest in domestic electric vehicle production.

The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) today announced the portal launch of the application process under the scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Electric Passenger Cars in India (SPMEPCI).

Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy said that the initiative marks a defining moment in India’s journey towards clean, self-reliant, and future-ready mobility.

“The launch of this portal under the SPMEPCI scheme opens new avenues for global electric vehicle manufacturers to invest in India’s rapidly evolving automotive landscape. This scheme not only supports our national commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2070, but also reinforces our resolve to build a sustainable, innovation-driven economy. It strengthens the pillars of ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’, and positions India as a trusted global hub for next-generation automotive manufacturing and technology leadership,” he said

According to an official statement, the scheme will help attract investments from global EV manufacturers and promote India as a manufacturing destination for e-vehicles.

It will also help put India on the global map for manufacturing of EVs, generate employment and achieve the goal of “Make in India”.

The scheme is strategically crafted to position India as a global hub for electric vehicle manufacturing.

With a minimum investment threshold of Rs 4,150 crore, it provides an enabling policy environment for leading global and domestic players to establish long-term manufacturing footprints in the country.

Through calibrated customs duty concessions and clearly defined domestic value addition (DVA) milestones, the scheme strikes a balance between introducing cutting-edge EV technologies and nurturing indigenous capabilities. It added.

Centre approves ‘moong’, ‘urad’ procurement under PPS scheme in MP

The Centre has approved the procurement of summer lentils ‘moong’ and ‘urad’ in Madhya Pradesh and ‘urad’ in Uttar Pradesh under the Price Support Scheme (PSS).

According to an official statement, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also discussed procurement logistics with the respective state agriculture ministers and issued necessary instructions to NAFED, NCCF and state officials.

Singh stated that although the decision to procure moong and urad would place a significant financial burden on the central government, the government is committed to ensuring farmers receive the intended benefits.

Direct procurement from farmers will reduce the influence of middlemen and ensure that the actual benefit reaches the farmers, he added

The PPS is designed to protect farmers from losses when market prices of certain agricultural commodities fall below a predetermined minimum support price (MSP).

When market prices drop, the government, through designated nodal agencies like NAFED, purchases the produce directly from farmers at the MSP. This ensures farmers receive a fair price for their crops and prevents distress sales.

Delhi Govt lacks preparation for monsoon: Devender Yadav

Delhi Congress Chief Devender Yadav

Disappointed with Delhi government’s monsoon preparedness, Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav expressed concern over the waterlogging issue in the city during rain.

He said that according to latest data, only 60.47 per cent of the desilting work of drains under the PWD jurisdiction has been completed, with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and Delhi Jal Board faring no better in cleaning the drains under their charge.

“With PWD advancing the date to complete the desilting work to June 30, the Capital will witness the familiar scene of flooded and water-logged roads when rains lash Delhi,” he added.

Yadav said that with the Rekha Gupta Government having extended the deadline for the completion of the desilting works to June 30, and the PWD having  missed the previous deadlines, the people of Delhi stare at the prospects of the streets getting flooded with traffic logjams making life unbearable for the commuters.

“The Rekha Gupta government seems to have been caught napping, like it used to be during the  regime of the Keriwal government. The pre-monsoon showers last week had flooded the roads and under passes, the hot spots which are prone to waterlogging, and the PWD has also identified 71 hot spots for waterlogging, yet the Government has not done anything to prevent the recurrence of waterlogging at such places,” he said.

He said that though the Rekha Gupta governemnt has been boasting of  its many “achievements” in the  the past 100 days, the reality is that the government has totally neglected issues that needed urgent attention on a priority basis like desilting of the sewers and storm water drains on time, taking steps to control air and water pollution, repairing the broken roads, clearing the accumulated garbage, improving the  health infrastructure among others.

Yadav said that Gupta’s comment that “rain is a natural occurrence, it is not as if there is a ‘Tawa’ (hot pan) beneath to make the water evaporate instantly,” was irresponsible and illogical as it only exposed the BJP Government’s unpreparedness to meet the challenges of monsoon, and when the situation goes out of control, blames the officials instead of the government taking the responsibility of not making adequate preparations.

In order to streamline procedures in line with the Centre’s maximum governance, minimum government, and ease of doing business policies, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has issued an order relieving the police from issuing licenses for various business activities, including  hotels, motels, guest houses, and restaurants.

According to the order, businesses will not have to obtain no objection certification from police to operate. This exemption applied to establishment such as swimming pools, auditoriums, amusement parks, video game parlours, and discotheques as well.

The licensing powers will now be with local bodies, including the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), and the Delhi Cantonment Board.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that union minister Amit Shah who handles the policing in the national capital, has said that police force should be relieved from non-core duties so that their energy and resources can be focused on law and order, security, and crime control.

“We want to make Delhi not only the political capital of India but also a model of good governance. That is the mission of our double-engine government,” Gupta said. Many in the hospitality industry have welcomed the initiative, viewing it as a positive step towards simplifying business processes and promoting ease of doing business in the capital.
