Congress retaliates, slams Modi govt for ‘Undeclared Emergency’ in country for past 11 years

“Indian democracy has been under a systematic and dangerous five-fold assault that can be best described as Undeclared Emergency,” says Ramesh

Retaliating with a scathing attack on the Narendra Modi government, opposition Congress on Wednesday alleged that over the past 11 years, Indian democracy has been under a “systematic and dangerous five-fold assault that can be best described as ‘Undeclared Emergency’.”

The Congress party accused PM Modi of “seeking mandate for new Constitution”, “weakening Parliament”, “eroding autonomy of Constitutional bodies,” “destroying state centre relations,” damaging judiciary”, “tax terrorism and intimidation of businesses and institutions,” “control over media” “rampant misuse of investigative agencies” and “unbridled hate speech and crack down of civil liberties” to claim “undeclared emergency” in the country

In his statement, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh alleged that government critics were routinely “vilified” and “hate, bigotry deliberately spread by the ruling establishment,” “protesting farmers labelled ‘Khalistanis,’ and advocates of caste census dismissed as “urban Naxals”.

“The killers of Mahatma Gandhi are glorified, minorities live in fear of their lives and property, dalits and other marginalised groups have been disproportionately targeted, and ministers making hate speeches have been rewarded with promotions,” he said on a day the BJP-led NDA government is observing ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ to mark the anniversary of imposition of Emergency by the then Indira Gandhi government in 1975.

“Over the past eleven years and thirty days, Indian democracy has been under a systematic and dangerous five-fold assault that can be best described as Undeclared Emergency@11,” he said.
