Srinagar set to host G20 Tourism Working Group Meeting

The picturesque city of Srinagar is gearing up to host the third G20 Tourism Working Group meeting, marking the first major international event in the region since the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status in 2019.
The three-day summit, scheduled from May 22 to May 24, will bring together representatives from various G20 member countries to deliberate on key priority areas, including Green Tourism, Digitalization, Skills, MSMEs, and Destination Management.

Twitter bug restoring deleted tweets for hundreds of clueless users

A bug in Twitter is apparently restoring deleted tweets and retweets for hundreds of users who have no clue about it and the micro-blogging platform was yet to admit the issue and issue a fix, the media reported on Monday.

Users are reporting that tweets they mass-deleted are reappearing on their profiles, reports The Verge.

James Vincent, a senior Verge reporter, wrote that earlier this month, he deleted all his tweets, just under 5, 000 of them, but can now see Twitter has restored a handful of old re-tweets.

“On May 8th, I deleted my tweets (I know the date because I tweeted about it). but when I checked my timeline this morning, twitter had restored some old re-tweets without warning. it’s yet another illustration of twitter’s unpredictable infrastructure, ” he said in a tweet.

Richard Morrell, open-source developer and former CTO/Chairman of SmoothWall, shared the same problem on Mastodon.

“Last November, I deleted all my Tweets. Every single one. I then ran Redact and deleted all my likes, my media, and retweets. 38k tweets gone. Woke up today to find 34k of them restored by Twitter, who presumably brought a server farm back up, ” he posted.

Morrell reported that over 400 people had told him so far that they, too, had seen their deleted messages restored, reports ZDNet.

He estimated that over a million previously deleted Tweets with just the people in his circles have reappeared.

Specifically, people report they’re seeing deleted tweets from November 2022 and earlier reappearing.

“I am pretty sure they’ve restored cold storage because all the restored tweets have date-time characteristics, ” said Morell.

Twitter was yet to issue an explanation for such claims.

According to a former Twitter site reliability engineer, “This sounds a lot like they moved a bunch of servers between datacenters and didn’t properly adjust the topology before reinserting them into the network, leading to stale data becoming revived.”

Siddaramaiah sworn in CM of Karnataka, several national opposition leaders attend

Bengaluru:  Siddaramaiah was sworn in as Chief Minister for the second term, along with state Congress President D K Shivakumar as Deputy Chief Minister, and eight legislators as Ministers on Saturday, exactly a week after the party swept the Assembly polls in Karnataka.

Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot administered the oath of office and secrecy to the Chief Minister and his Cabinet at Sree Kanteerava Stadium here, where Siddaramaiah had taken oath in 2013, when he became Chief Minister for the first time.

The Legislators who were sworn in as Ministers are: G Parameshwara, K H Muniyappa, K J George, M B Patil, Satish Jarkiholi, Priyank Kharge (AICC President M Mallikarjun Kharge’s son), Ramalinga Reddy, and B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan.

Mallikarjun Kharge, former Congress President Rahul Gandhi, General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra attended the swearing in ceremony, while former AICC President Sonia Gandhi was absent. Chief Ministers of Congress ruled states Ashok Gehlot (Rajasthan), Bhupesh Baghel (Chhattisgarh) and Sukhvinder Singh Sukku (Himachal Pradesh) and several top party leaders were also in attendance.

Congress chief Kharge had invited leaders of several like-minded parties for the swearing-in ceremony. The event seemed to be a show of strength for opposition parties amid unity efforts to take on the ruling BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav, NCP President Sharad Pawar, National Conference supremo Farooq Abdullah, PDP chief Mahbooba Mufti, actor-politician Kamal Haasan, CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury and CPI General Secretary D Raja among others attended the event.

A meeting of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) on Thursday had formally elected Siddaramaiah as its leader and Chief Minister, following which he staked his claim with the Governor, who invited him to form the government.

The 75-year old Siddaramaiah will become the Chief Minister for the second term after his earlier five-year stint from 2013; while 61-year old Shivakumar, who had earlier worked as Minister under Siddaramaiah, will also continue as the party’s Karnataka state president till Parliamentary elections next year.

‘Complete violation of Federalism’: Raghav Chadha on Centre’s ordinance

New Delhi : A day after the Central government brought an ordinance to negate Supreme Court judgment placing ‘services’ under the control of the state government in the national capital, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha slammed the government saying that it is complete violation of federalism, constitutional powers given to elected governments.

In a series of tweets, Chadha said: “To overturn a well thought out, unanimous Constitution Bench judgment by a reckless political Ordinance, in complete violation of – Federalism: part of basic structure of Constitution, Constitutional Powers given Elected Governments, Principle of Accountability of Civil Services to Ministers and is not just Contempt of Court but also Contempt of the Electorate.”

His remarks came a day after the Centre issued ordinance to negate Supreme Court verdict that gave Delhi government control of ‘services’.

The Central government has brought an ordinance to set up a permanent authority known as the National Capital Civil Service Authority whose chairperson will Delhi Chief Minister along with Chief Secretary, Delhi, Principal Secretary (Home), to make recommendations to the Delhi LG regarding matters concerning transfer posting, vigilance and other incidental matters. However, in case of difference of opinion, the decision of the LG shall be final.

On May 11, a five-judge constitution bench of the Supreme Court ruled that it is ideal to hold that a democratically elected Delhi government should have control over its officers and the LG is bound by the advice of the elected government in everything other than public order, police, and land. The top court stressed that if the government is not able to control and hold to account the officers posted in its service, then its responsibility towards the legislature as well as the public is diluted.

The ordinance came after the apex court gave the Delhi government control in services matters, including transfer and posting of officers.

NIA conducts searches at 15 locations in Jammu and Kashmir

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted searches at 15 locations in seven districts of Jammu and Kashmir in connection with two terror-related cases.

The districts where searches are underway include Srinagar, Pulwama, Avantipora, Anantnag, Shopian, Poonchh, and Kupwara.

The NIA is carrying out the searches in coordination with the Central Reserve Police Force and Jammu and Kashmir Police.

One case was registered by NIA’s Delhi branch in 2021, while the other was lodged by the agency’s Jammu branch in 2022.

This follows previous raids conducted by the NIA on May 15 in Budgam, Shopian, Pulwama, Srinagar, and Anantnag districts, as well as searches conducted on December 23, 2022, in Kulgam, Pulwama, Anantnag, Sopore, and Jammu districts.

Is centre ‘conspiring’ to overturn SC order on services matters, asks Kejriwal

New Delhi : Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal asked on Friday whether the Centre was “conspiring” to reverse through an ordinance the Supreme Court verdict giving the elected government executive powers in services matters.

The Delhi government was given executive power in services matters, including transfer and posting of officers, in an important verdict by the Supreme Court last week.

Delhi Services Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj also asked whether the lieutenant governor and the Centre were “conspiring” to reverse the verdict by bringing in an ordinance.

Addressing a press conference, the minister and AAP leader said he requested all his cabinet colleagues to join him for a meeting with Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena to request him to clear the file pertaining to the transfer of Services Secretary Ashish More.

Later in a tweet, Kejriwal reiterated Bharadwaj’s charge.

“Why is LG sir not obeying the SC order? Why hasn’t the file pertaining to Services Secretary been signed for two days? It is being said that the Centre is going to reverse the SC order by bringing an ordinance next week? Is the Centre conspiring to overturn the SC order? Is LG sir waiting for the ordinance and that’s why he is not signing the file?” Kejriwal asked in a tweet in Hindi.

Earlier in the day, Bharadwaj requested the lieutenant governor (LG) to clear the file related to the transfer of Services Secretary More, saying several administrative changes were held up due to the delay.

In a letter to the LG, Bharadwaj said the Delhi government had sent the file two days ago.

More was transferred hours after a Supreme Court order on May 11 put the control of bureaucrats working with the Delhi government — excluding those related to police, public order and land — under the elected government.

Bharadwaj urged Saxena to clear the file soon.

RBI to withdraw Rs 2,000 currency notes from circulation, can be exchanged till September 30

New Delhi : The Reserve Bank of India on Friday announced withdrawal of Rs 2,000 currency notes from circulation, and existing notes in circulation can either be deposited in bank accounts or exchanged by September 30.

The bank notes in Rs 2,000 denomination will continue to be a legal tender, the RBI said in a statement.

In order to ensure operational convenience and to avoid disruption of regular activities of bank branches, the RBI said exchange of Rs 2,000 bank notes into bank notes of other denominations can be made up to a limit of Rs 20,000 at a time at any bank starting from May 23, 2023.

The RBI has advised banks to stop issuing Rs 2,000 denomination banknotes with immediate effect.

Besides, the facility for exchange of Rs 2,000 bank notes up to the limit of Rs 20,000 at a time will be provided at the 19 Regional Offices (ROs) of the RBI having issue departments from May 23.

The Rs 2,000 denomination bank note was introduced in November 2016, primarily to meet the currency requirement of the economy in an expeditious manner after the withdrawal of legal tender status of all Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 bank notes that were in circulation at that time.

Siddaramaiah Karnataka’s next CM, D K Shivakumar his deputy

New Delhi:  Ending days of suspense, the Congress on Thursday announced Siddaramaiah as the next chief minister of Karnataka and D K Shivakumar as his only deputy in the soon-to-formed cabinet.

The two leaders, who were in a tight race for the top post, would take oath along with other ministers on May 20 and leaders of all like-minded parties will be invited for the swearing-in ceremony.

Announcing the decision taken by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge after hectic parleys ever since the party emerged victorious on May 13, General Secretary (Organisation) K C Venugopal said all leaders, including the top leadership, worked very hard to make Karnataka victory a reality.

“We have decided on Siddaramiah as the chief minister of Karnataka. D K Shivakumar will the only Deputy CM,” he said.

Shivakumar will also continue as the party’s Karnataka state president till Parliamentary elections, he said.

At the same press conference, senior party leader Randeep Surjewala said the Congress party is committed to fulfil the five promises that were made during the elections. Asked about the much-talked-about power-sharing formula between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, Venugopal said the only power-sharing formula is to share the power with the people of Karnataka.  “Ours is a democratic party, we believe in consensus and not in dictatorship,” he said on the hectic discussions held over the last few days.

He was born on May 18, 1933 at Haradanahalli village in Holenarasipura taluk of Hassan district. He completed a civil engineering diploma and came into the field of politics at the age of 20 years. He joined Congress party in 1953 and remained a member till 1962.

China,Turkey expected to skip G20 meeting in Kashmir

China and Turkey are among the G20 member states that will not attend a tourism working group meeting scheduled to take place in Srinagar next week, according to some reports in the media.

The meeting, scheduled from May 22 to May 24, is considered one of the largest international events to be organized in Kashmir since the revocation of Article 370 in August 2019. Tight security measures have been implemented around the venue, the Sher-e-Kashmir International Conventional Centre (SKICC), situated on the banks of Dal Lake.

It remains uncertain whether Indonesia, the previous president of the G20 and a member of the grouping’s troika, will participate in the meeting in Srinagar.

Despite objections raised by Pakistan, India has dismissed concerns over hosting G20 meetings in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, asserting that similar events are being organized in all states and union territories ahead of the summit in New Delhi scheduled for September.

China, which previously skipped a G20 meeting held in Arunachal Pradesh in March, has decided not to attend the meeting in Srinagar, allegedly due to objections from its close ally, Pakistan. Turkey, on the other hand, has criticized India’s handling of the situation in Kashmir in previous years, leading to its decision to skip the event.
