Monsoon In Kerala Kills 13

Monsoons and rainfall related incidents in Kerala have claimed 13 lives in the last two days.

Authorities claim nine people died in the related incidents in Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasargod and two people died in Thiruvananthapuram and one each at Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha district. Most of the deaths occurred due to the uprooting of trees and drowning in rivers.

The rains resulted in the huge devastation of crops and property in Idukki, Kozhikode, and Kannur districts, officials added.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has asked officials to be alert as Met department has raised a warning regarding strong winds with speed of 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, which are likely along and off Kerala coast and over Lakshadweep islands in the next 24 hours.

The monsoon also hit Maharashtra on June 8 resulted in numerous incidents of waterlogging and traffic jams. However, India Meteorological Department has withdrawn heavy rainfall warning, accordingly city to receive only a few spells. Moderate rains are expected to continue over Mumbai.

PNB Scam: Nirav Modi Flees To UK Claiming Political Asylum

Nirav Modi, involved in money laundering case for allegedly defrauding the PNB (India’s second-largest state-run bank) to the tune of over $2 billion, fled to the United Kingdom where he had claimed political asylum, according to reports.

Britain’s Home Office said it does not provide information on individual cases.

“There are always a number of complicated cases that add a little tension and spice to our relationship with India,”  said a senior UK Foreign Office official.

“But there is also an appreciation from both sides that we have a legal process that has to be gone through and that we are of course governed by human rights legislation,”  he added.

External Affairs Ministry reportedly said that the government is waiting for the law enforcement agencies to approach them before pushing for an extradition, which had thus far not happened.

In May, a case was filed against Modi and his uncle Choksi for cheating the bank and other 23 people engaged in the fraud, including former PNB chief Usha Ananthasubramanian, two of the bank’s executive directors and three companies belonging to Nirav Modi.

However, Modi and Choksi have denied any wrongdoing in the same.

Plot To Assassinate PM Modi: ‘It Is To Gain Sympathy’ Says Sharad Pawar

On 8 June, a letter revealing the plot to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a “Rajiv Gandhi-type incident” has been seized from a suspected Maoist, police told a court in Pune.

The threat letter was seized from Rona Wilson, one of the five persons (Dalit activist Sudhir Dhawale, lawyer Surendra Gadling, activists Mahesh Raut and Shoma Sen) who were arrested from Mumbai, Nagpur and Delhi in connection with ‘Elgar Parishad’ held in Pune in December and the Bhima-Koregaon violence in the district.

Prosecutor Ujjwala Pawar told the court that the letter also revealed about requirement of Rs 8 crore to procure M-4 rifle and 4 lakh rounds.

Amid the controversy over life threat to PM Modi, Sharad Pawar, Nationalist Congress Party chief, claimed that assassination plot against PM Modi was only devised to garner public sympathy.

He added, “They say there was a threatening letter. I spoke to a retired police officer, who had worked for CID. He said there is no substance in the letter. The letter is being used to garner people’s sympathy.”

“When like-minded people came together to organise the Elgar Parishad, they were called Naxals and were arrested. Everyone knows who executed the Bhima-Koregaon violence but those who have no links with it were arrested. This is nothing but misuse of power,” Pawar said.

“The BJP has realised that they are losing popular support. In order to gain sympathy, the BJP is now playing the threat letter card,” Pawar added.

Providing a befitting response to Pawar, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, “he did not expect Mr Pawar to stoop down to this level.”

He tweeted, “It is very unfortunate that Sharad Pawar ji is raising doubts about the communication ceased by the police which revels the plot to assassin Hon PM @narendramodi ji.”
