Plot To Kill PM Modi, Revealed In Maoist Letter

Pune Police arrested five persons earlier this week for plotting to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi. All five persons have alleged links with the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist).

The police produced a “letter” in a sessions court, which they found at the Delhi residence of Rona Wilson , a prisoners’ rights activist, the letter stated that the Maoists were planning to eliminate PM Modi in an attack similar to that on former PM Rajiv Gandhi in Tamil Nadu in 1991.

The letter which is addressed to one Comrade Prakash by sender “R”, mentions the need for Rs 8 crore to procure an M4 rifle and four lakh rounds of ammunition for the purpose. “The Modi-led Hindu fascism is bulldozing its way into the lives of indigenous Adivasis. In spite of big defeats like Bihar and West Bengal, Modi has successfully established BJP governments in more than 15 states. If this pace continues, it would mean immense trouble for the party on all fronts. Senior comrades have proposed concrete steps to end Modi raj and were thinking along the lines of another Rajiv Gandhi-type incident,” the letter reads.

Public Prosecutor Ujjwala Pawar quoted from the letter, “It sounds suicidal and there is a great chance that we might fail, but we feel that the party PB (Central committee) must deliberate over our proposal. Targeting his roadshows could be an effective strategy. We collectively believe that survival of the party is supreme.”

Meanwhile Special Protection Guard (SPG), which provides security to the prime minister, has advised PM Narendra Modi not to hold impromptu road shows.

Facebook Privacy Goof Up: India Gives June 20 Deadline; Another ‘Bug’ Affects 14 Million Users

The Indian government has sought explanation from Facebook by June 20 over reports of sharing of users’ information without their consent with mobile manufacturers.

“Recently there are media reports claiming that Facebook has agreements which are allowing phone and other device manufacturers’ access to its users’ personal information, including that of their friends without taking their explicit consent. The government of India is deeply concerned about reports of such lapses violations,” Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said in a statement.

The government added in its statement that “in response to earlier notices regarding the breach of personal data relating to the Cambridge Analytica row, Facebook had apologised and given strong assurances to the government that they would take sincere efforts to protect the privacy of users’ data on the platform.”

Therefore the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has also asked for a detailed factual report.

Statement said, “However, such reports raise uncomfortable questions about the assurances made by Facebook.”

This comes in backdrop of the meeting of parliamentary standing committee on information and technology attended by Union home secretary Rajiv Gauba and National Cyber Security chief Dr Gulshan Rai, along with other cyber security and intelligence officers which took place in May. Experts discussed citizens’ data security and privacy issues after the Cambridge Analytica row and Facebook users’ data breach issue.

Meanwhile, on June 7 the Facebook said that their 14 million users who thought they were posting a message just to friends or smaller groups may have actually been sharing their posts or messages widely with the general public due to a software bug that was active from May 18 to May 27.

“Starting today we are letting everyone affected know and asking them to review any posts they made during that time,” Erin Egan, chief privacy officer said in a statement.

“We’d like to apologize for this mistake,” Egan said.

Pranab Mukherjee Addresses RSS Workers At Nagpur

Former President of India, Dr. Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday addressed a gathering of RSS workers at the valedictory function of the ‘Sangh Shiksha Varg’ in Nagpur, the headquarters of the RSS.

In his speech, Dr. Pranab Mukherjee said, “I am here amongst you to share my understanding of the concepts of nation, nationalism and patriotism in the context of India. On 26 January 1950, the Constitution of India came into effect. Democracy became our most precious guide towards peace & regeneration from the swamp of poverty created by centuries of colonial rule. For us, democracy is not a gift, but a sacred trust. The Constitution of India represents the hopes & aspirations of a billion plus Indians. From our Constitution flows our nationalism.”

“We derive our strength from tolerance. We accept & respect our pluralism. We celebrate our diversity. Any attempt at defining our nationhood in terms of dogmas & identities of religion, region, hatred & intolerance will only lead to dilution of our national identity. India’s Nationhood is not 1 language,1 religion,1 enemy. It  is Perennial Universalism of 1.3 billion people who use more than 122 languages & 1600 dialects, practice 7 major religions & belong to 3 major ethnic groups, live under 1 system,1 flag & 1 identity of being Indian,” Mukherjee said.

Speaking further, Pranab said, “In a democracy, informed & reasoned public engagement on all issues of national importance is essential. A dialogue is necessary not only to balance the competing interests but also to reconcile them. Succinctly tells us that in the happiness of people lies the happiness of the king, their welfare is his welfare. The State is for the people,” Mukherjee added.

Addressing the RSS workers, Ex-President said, “People are at the centre of all activities of the State and nothing should be done to divide them. The aim of the State should be to galvanise them to fight a concerted war against poverty, disease & deprivation. Only then can we create a nation where Nationalism flows automatically,” he concluded.

Earlier in the day, Pranab Mukherjee visited the birthplace of the RSS founding member Keshav Baliram Hedgewar at the RSS headquarters. He was welcomed by the RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. “Today I came here to pay my respect and homage to a great son of Mother India,” the former president wrote in the visitor’s book.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat speaking on the controversy of Pranab Mukherjee attending the event said, “There have been many debates on Pranab Mukherjee attending the event, but we do not consider anyone different from ourselves. The debate over RSS invitation to former President Pranab Mukherjee is meaningless. Indians are all one and united. There has been a tradition where we invite well-known people from various walks of life. The RSS only wants to unite the entire society. We embrace all,” he added.
