Odisha: 5 of family killed in road accident in Puri

Five members of a family were killed while two others seriously wounded on Tuesday when a car carrying them plunged into a canal in Odisha’s Puri district.

According to the reports, the incident took place between Rua and Bhailapur on the Nirakarpur-Puri road.

The family was proceeding to Puri from Patrapur area in Ganjam district when the vehicle skidded off a road at Bhailipur area and slipped into the canal, police said.

Two children and a woman were among those killed and the injured were rushed to Chandanpur hospital.

Local people launched a rescue operation after the accident and pulled out the victims from the car.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed grief over the death of people and announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the next of the kin of the victims.

Bihar Deputy CM requests criminals not to commit crimes during ‘Pitru Paksh’

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister (CM) Sushil Modi has requested criminals to refrain from indulging in illegal activities during the period of ‘Pitru Paksha’. He urged them to shun violence during the 15 days of the festival.

While addressing an event at Gaya Deputy CM Modi said, “With folded hands, I want to appeal to all the criminals to refrain from indulging in criminal activities during the time of ‘Pitru Paksha’. During other days, you keep doing something or the other.”

Deputy CM added, “Do not indulge in any activity that tarnishes the image of Bihar, brings a bad name to the holy town of Gaya and gives the visitors a reason to complain.”

However, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, while taunting CM Nitish Kumar and Deputy CM Modi on deteriorating law and order situation in the state said, “No need to be surprised even if the infamous pair falls at the feet of criminals….after all, criminals have more AK-47 rifles than the Bihar police.”

‘Pitru Paksha’ is a significant month of the Hindu calendar. During this time, Hindus pay homage to their ancestors, especially through food offerings.

UN: EAM Sushma Swaraj discusses trade, investment and development at bilaterals

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj met several of her foreign counterparts from across the globe in a whirlwind of bilateral interactions.

On Monday, Swaraj attended the high-level event on counter-narcotics convened by US President Donald Trump.

Swaraj spoke at the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit and said, “Nelson Mandela’s life is an inspiration for all. He showed fearlessness and courage in the face of discrimination and adversity.”

Sushma Swaraj met the Foreign Ministers of Spain, Australia, Ecuador, Colombia, Mongolia, Nepal, Lichtenstein, Morocco and Federica Mogherini, the European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs on the sidelines of the high-level session of the 73rd UN General Assembly.

External Affairs Minister spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted, “Relations characterised by warmth and cordiality! EAM @SushmaSwaraj and Foreign Minister of Colombia, @CarlosHolmesTru met on the sidelines of #UNGA2018. Discussed cooperation on trade & investment, pharma, mining, petroleum and capacity building,” Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted.

In another tweet he said, Swaraj and Amores discussed ways to further consolidate bilateral relationship in the areas of trade, agriculture, pharma, IT.

“EAM @SushmaSwaraj met with Foreign Minister of #Ecuador Jose Valencia Amores. Good discussion on ways to further consolidate bilateral relationship in the areas of trade, agriculture, pharma, IT and capacity building. #UNGA,” Kumar tweeted.

Swaraj met Borrellf and discussed the ways to intensify ties in investment, renewable energy, water treatment and tourism.

“EAM @SushmaSwaraj and Spanish Foreign Minister @JosepBorrellF met on the sidelines of UNGA and explored ways to intensify ties in investment, renewable energy, water treatment, tourism and their contribution to our flagship initiatives.”

Kumar further said, Sushma Swaraj after a very hectic day, had a warm meeting with Foreign Minister of Mongolia.

Tamil Nadu BJP chief Soundararjan nominates PM Modi for Nobel Peace Prize

Tamilisai Soundararjan, BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit president nominated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Nobel Peace Prize for launching the ‘world’s largest’ healthcare scheme.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been nominated for Nobel Peace Prize 2019 for launching the world’s largest healthcare scheme Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana- Ayushman Bharat by Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan…” a press release from the state BJP chief’s office said.

Soundararjan’s husband, Professor Dr P Soundarajan, Head of Department and Senior Consultant in Nephrology at a private university, has also nominated PM Modi for Nobel peace prize, press release said.

The press release further said that the “path-breaking initiative” of the “visionary” PM, will transform the lives of millions of people, especially the underprivileged and vulnerable section of the society.

“The last date for Nomination for Nobel Peace Prize 2019 is January 31, 2019. The nomination processes start in September each year. University Professors and Members of Parliament among others can also nominate our Prime Minister,” the release further added.

BJP Tamil Nadu Chief Soundarajan also appealed to all healthcare providers in India and abroad to join her in nominating PM Modi for Nobel Peace Prize 2019.

Jammu and Kashmir: Gun-battle in Sopore, internet suspended, educational institutes closed

A brutal gun-battle on Tuesday morning broke out between security forces and militants in Sopore town of Baramulla district.

Official sources said that a joint team of Army’s 22 Rashtriya Rifles, special operations group (SOG) and CRPF cordoned Nowpora village of Tujjer in Sopore late last night and started a search operation following information about the presence of militants.

“As the cordon was tightened the militants hiding in the area opened fire upon the forces triggering a gunfight,” official said.

Meanwhile, authorities have suspended the Internet services and closed all educational institutions in Sopore.

The operation is underway to trace out the militants.

Himachal Pradesh: 45 people missing in Lahaul Spiti as heavy snowfall lashes region

In tragic incident, 45 people, including 35 students of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee who had gone for trekking in Himachal Pradesh’s mountainous Lahaul and Spiti district have been reported missing after heavy snowfall in the region.

According to the sources, the group had gone for a trek to the Hampta pass and were supposed to return to Manali However, they have not returned till now and also fail to establish any contact.

Himachal Pradesh has seen heavy rain in many areas. Higher altitude regions of the state have also witnessed heavy snowfall.

At least five people died, and many were injured in separate incidents as heavy rain pounded Kullu, Kangra and Chamba districts on Monday, the officials said.

Meanwhile, schools in various districts of Himachal Pradesh have been directed to remain closed on Tuesday as a precautionary measure.

SC asks 8 states, 1 UT to file replies within two weeks on directives to curb mob lynching

The Supreme Court on September 24 asked eight states and one union territory (UT) to file their replies within two weeks in connection with its directives to curb cow vigilantism and mob lynching incidents. The SC said that people should realize that such kind of incidents would invite the “wrath of law”.

Apex court bench headed Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra took note of the fact that eight states, including Mizoram, Telangana, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Delhi, are yet to file reports indicating the compliance of its July 17 verdict giving a slew of directions to deal with cow vigilantism and mob violence.

The court has asked the Centre and the states to give wide publicity within a week on how mob violence of any kind will invite serious consequence under the law.

SC by its July 17 judgment had directed the central and the state governments to “broadcast on radio and television and other media platforms, including the official websites of the Home Department and Police of the states, that lynching and mob violence of any kind shall invite serious consequence under the law.”

Senior lawyer Indira Jaising, representing petitioner Tushar Gandhi, told SC despite its orders, the Centre and states haven’t been publicizing it.

The apex court said, “The purpose of broadcasting is to put the preventive measures on a high pedestal and people must realize lynching will invite serious trouble.”

The petitioners said that 54 victims of mob lynching are yet to get compensation from the states.

Unidentified armed men abducted three mine workers, including an Indian National, in Burkina Faso

An Indian national and a South African were among three mine workers abducted by unidentified armed men in a northern part of Burkina Faso which has been repeatedly targeted by terrorists sources said.

Security source reportedly said, “The three men of Indian, South African and Burkinabe nationality were kidnapped by unidentified armed men” between the Inata gold mine and the town of Djibo bordering Mali and Niger.

A fellow mine worker while confirming the kidnapping said, “the three men left the site (of the mine) around 8:00 am and by 10:00 am they had no more news of them.”

“After alerting the defense and security forces, we learned there had been a kidnapping,” mine worker added.

Another security source in the capital Ouagadougou said, “The kidnappers are probably members of jihadist groups operating in the region.”

He further added that the assailants “headed towards the Mali border, and have likely already crossed it.”

Delhi special cell arrest 3 foreign nationals, seize drugs worth Rs 25 crore

The special cell of Delhi police arrested three foreign nationals, two Afghan nationals and a Nigerian national for allegedly supplying heroin worth Rs 25 crore from South Delhi’s Saket area. Police seize five-kg of heroin and 4,200 US dollars from the three men.

All the three foreign nationals were running an international drug cartel from a house in Khirki Extension, the high quality contraband was transported to Delhi by the Afghan network, stored at their residence and then sent to the US and Canada through drug mules.

According to the police, the three accused have been identified as Esmatullah and Khalilullah, the Afghan Nationals and Osondu, Nigerian national. They were arrested following a tip-off.

PS Kushwah, deputy commissioner of police (special cell), said “We had received information that the two accused would come to Saket to hand over a packet of drugs. A trap was laid at the exit gate of a hospital in Saket where the two Afghan nationals had come to deliver a consignment to a Nigerian national at around 1 am. While handing the consignment the three were nabbed.”

DCP said that the two Afghan nationals have already supplied more than 100 kg of heroin in Delhi in the past two years.

Both Estamullah and Khalillulah had been visiting India for the past three years on medical visa and bringing heroin produced from the poppy farms in Afghanistan and processed by the locals.

Police is further making the efforts to arrest other members of the gang.

Navy Officer Abhilash Tomy, Stranded in Indian Ocean, Rescued

Navy officer Abhilash Tomy, who was stranded in the Indian Ocean near Australia from past four days after a deadly storm hit his solo boat, was rescued by a French naval vessel on Monday.

Commander Tomy, suffered a spinal injury, is conscious, relieved and has been shifted to the French fishing vessel Osiris, said Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

“A sense of relief to know that naval officer @abhilashtomy is rescued by the French fishing vessel. He’s concious and doing okay. The vessel will shift him to a nearby island (I’lle Amsterdam) by evening. INS Satpura will take him to Mauritius for medical attention. @PIB_India,” Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman tweeted.

Tomy’s vessel was hit by a vicious storm mid-way across the south Indian Ocean while taking part in the Golden Globe Race (GGR) 2018 on Friday, among the toughest races on Earth but his one-man sail boat, the Thuriya lost its mast after being caught in the storm that whipped up 10-metre high waves.

The 39-year-old also suffered a back injury that left him immobilised.

An Indian Navy P-8 reconnaissance aircraft on Sunday managed to spot Commander Tomy’s boat located approximately 5,020 km due south from Kanyakumari.

Tomy in his text message had indicated that he was safe but immobile due to back injury.

Commander Abhilash Tomy was the only Indian participating in the race that involves a gruelling 30,000-mile solo circumnavigation of the globe.
