Prime Minister Modi inaugurates Sikkim’s first airport at Pakyong

Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi on September 24 inaugurated the first airport in Sikkim at Pakyong. The first commercial flight from Pakyong is scheduled to start on October 4.

State Chief Minister Pawan Chamling and Union Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu were also present on the occasion, as the PM unveiled the plaque, formally inaugurating the first ever aerodrome facility.

Speaking at the occasion, PM Modi hailed all the engineers for their work in bringing about an engineering marvel. PM Modi also stated that India now has 100 functional airports, out of which 35 airports were built in the past four years.

PM added that the Sikkim airport will improve connectivity, benefiting the people of the state.

The prime minister arrived in Sikkim on September 23 evening on a two-day visit to the state.

Sikkim Chief Secretary A K Srivastava said that the airport is spread over 201 acres and is located on top of a hill about 2 km above Pakyong village at 4,500 feet above sea level.

PM Modi also said that work is progressing at a rapid pace to strengthen both, infrastructural and emotional connectivity to Sikkim and rest of the northeastern region.

The airport was constructed by the Airports Authority of India and at present, the nearest airport from Sikkim is located 124 km away in Bagdogra in West Bengal.

Indo-Russia exercise ‘Aviaindra’ begins in Lipetsk

The Aviaindra 2018 Indian-Russian air tactical exercise kicked off at the State Flight Training and Test Centre on September 23. The drill will conclude on September 28.

Taking to their official Twitter handle, the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of India wrote, “The #AviaIndra2018 #Russian-#Indian air tactical exercise kicked off in Lipetsk at the State Flight Training and Test Centre.”

Aviaindra is a bilateral exercise between Indian Air Force and Russian Federation Air Force with a focus towards anti-terrorist operations.

First Aviaindra exercise was conducted in year 2014.

Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation said that around 20 pilots of the fighter, Army and military transport aviation have arrived at the site of the drills. Engineers, flight control and air safety specialists are also the part of the Indian delegation. Su-30SM, Su-25, MiG-29, An-26 and Mi-8 aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces will be involved in the drills.

Under the bilateral exercise Russian and Indian crews will practice combat use of missiles, bombs and small arms at ground targets, dogfight, tactical airborne assault and shorter runway landing.

The Aviaindra 2018 air tactical exercise will be concluded on September 29.

IMD issues ‘yellow alert’ in 5 districts in Kerala, heavy rainfall expected in two days

The India Meteorological Department in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram issued yellow alert for five districts Pathanamthitta, Palakkad, Idukki, Wayanad and Thrissur between September 25-26. The department has predicted heavy rainfall between 64.4mm to 124.4mm.

A yellow alert indicates the weather may change or worsen in the next few days and denotes heavy rainfall at isolated places.

Kerala Chief Minister Officer said, “Yellow alert has been issued for Pathanamthitta, Idukki and Wayanad districts for September 25. In addition, a yellow alert has been issued for Palakkad, Idukki, Thrissur and Wayanad districts for September 26.”

The Kerala CMO has also instructed the State Disaster Management Authority and district authorities to be on alert and take precautionary measures.

Nearly a month ago, Kerala experienced the worst floods in nearly a century, which claimed lives of more than 400 people in the state and resulted in damage to the tune of nearly Rs. 20,000 crores. 

Former BCCI President B.N. Dutt dies in Kolkata

Former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Biswanath Dutt passed away on Monday following respiratory ailments. He was 92.

According to the family sources, Dutt’s condition deteriorated due to a lung infection and could not recover anymore. He died at his south Kolkata residence.

Dutt is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.

He began his career in cricket administration as CAB secretary in 1977 and became president in 1982.

Dutt played a crucial role behind the rise of Jagmohan Dalmiya in Indian cricket.

Dutt was BCCI President from 1988 to 1990. Moreover, he served as president of the Cricket Association of Bengal from 1986 to 1991.

The veteran cricket administrator also chaired the Indian Football Association.

Himachal Pradesh: 19 people stranded at Dobi in Kullu rescued

Nineteen people stranded at Dobi in Kullu district after flash floods and heavy rains were rescued on Sunday by an Indian Air Force chopper.

The chopper from Air Force was requisitioned on the direction of Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur and the stranded people were rescued safely.

Presiding over a meeting to take stock of situation arisen due to the heavy rains for the last few days in the state, especially in four districts of Kullu, Kinnaur, Chamba and Lahaul and Spiti. Thakur directed the officers to take all precautionary measures to minimise loss to life and property due to heavy rains.

Meanwhile, it was informed in the meeting that all 120 people stranded at Koksar were rescued, Likewise, 23 people were rescued from Mari and 23 from Rohtang, officials said.

Apart from this, 14 others were rescued by the Border Road Organisation (BRO) from Kullu.

The chief minister also directed that water levels in Chemera Dam I, II and III and Pandoh should be monitored strictly and early warning provided to authorities concerned.

All educational institutions in Kullu will remain closed today.

Maldives Election: India congratulates Opposition leader Ibrahim Mohammed Solih

India on Monday congratulated Maldives Opposition leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for claiming the victory in the Maldivian Presidential Election after securing over 58 percent votes.

“We Welcome the successful completion of presidential election process in the Maldives which, according to preliminary information, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has won. We heartily congratulate him on his victory and hope that Election Commission will officially confirm the result at the earliest,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a press statement.

“The Maldivian Presidential Election not only marks the triumph of democratic forces in the Maldives, but also reflects the firm commitment to the values of democracy and the rule of law,” MEA said.

“In keeping with our ‘Neighbourhood First’ Policy, India looks onward to working closely with the Maldives in further deepening our partnership,” the External Affairs Ministry added.

Opposition leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih claimed victory in the presidential elections early on Monday in a surprise defeat for Yameen.

Bihar: Former Mayor Samir Kumar, driver shot dead in Muzaffarpur

In a shocking incident in Bihar, unidentified assailants on Sunday shot dead former Muzaffarpur Mayor Samir Kumar and his driver.

The incident took place in the evening near the Banaras Bank Chowk in Muzaffarpur when Samir Kumar and his driver, who were travelling in their car were overtaken by a motorcycle.

The criminals forced the driver to stop the car and started firing indiscriminately at Kumar and his driver using AK-47 and fled the spot, police said.

Samir Kumar and his driver died at the spot.

“We are investigating the case. More than 17 rounds using AK 47 were fired in this incident. Several empty bullet cartridges were recovered from the crime scene. We are scanning through the CCTV footage to identify the criminals,” DSP, Muzaffarpur said.

The forensic science laboratory team reached the spot to collect forensic evidence/samples from the site, he said.

The bodies of the deceased were sent for postmortem, he added.

Further investigations are underway.

Manohar Parrikar to continue as Goa CM: Amit Shah

Putting an end to the speculation surrounding appointment of a new chief minister in Goa, BJP chief Amit Shah announced on Sunday that Manohar Parrikar would continue as the chief minister of Goa.

However, Shah said that there would be certain changes in the cabinet and other government departments.

“After discussion with the core team of the party in Goa, it has been decided that Chief minister of Goa Manohar Parrikar will continue leading the state government. However, there will be changes in several departments and the Cabinet of the state government will be made shortly,” Amit Shah said on Twitter.

Since the day Parrikar was shifted to AIIMS hospital for treatment, tension emerged among the political ranks in Goa, especially among the allies of BJP.

Previously reports suggested that the BJP had launched efforts to find a replacement for Parrikar after the Congress, the single largest party in the 40-member Goa Assembly, staked claim to power.

Amit Shah on Wednesday held discussions with BJP general secretary (organisation) Ram Lal and national joint secretary B L Santosh, followed by another meeting of key party leaders involved in the state.

Shah had earlier deputed Ram Lal, B L Santhosh, and Vinay Puranik to reach out to allies to take stock of the political situation in the state.

The Congress had earlier staked claim to form the government in Goa and had urged the Governor not to dissolve the House and give it a chance to form the government.

Kartarpur corridor row: Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh urges Centre for quick resolution with Pak

Punjab Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh on Sunday urged the Centre for quick resolution of the issue of opening up of the Kartarpur Sahib corridor for preparedness of 550th birth anniversary of Sikhism’s founder Guru Nanak Dev.

Singh said he had personally met the prime minister Narendra Modi and the external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj and requested them to take up the issue with Pakistan.

Speaking to the reporters, Singh said that Kartarpur Corridor being one of the parts of the bilateral issues, it needs an active engagement from both India and Pakistan.

His urged comes a day after New Delhi rejected Islamabad’s proposal of resumption of dialogue, saying talks and terror cannot go hand-in-hand.

Moreover, the Centre said that the Pakistan is yet to officially communicate on the issue.

The Ministry of External Affairs also claimed that it has been raising the issue with Islamabad rigorously over the past few decades.

“The government is planning to commemorate the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, in a big manner,” the Chief Minister said.

Rewari Gangrape Case: Haryana Police Arrests Two Main Accused

The Haryana Police have arrested two of the three accused who went absconding after gangraping a 19-year-old girl in Rewari.

They are identified as college student Manish and an Army man Pankaj.

According to DGP BS Sandhu 30 police teams were formed to nab the accused.

The culprits had been absconding since September 12. They were arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) from Satnali in Haryana’s Mahendragarh district on late Saturday night.

All three accused belong to same village in Rewari district.

The Haryana police had earlier nabbed Deen Dayal, Dr Sanjeev and Nishu Phogat in the Rewari gangrape case. The arrested persons were sent to police remand after they were produced before Civil Court Kanina.

An eight-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted to investigate the matter.

The 19-year-old girl, who was facilitated by President Ram Nath Kovind for her academic achievements, was raped by three men, when she was on her way to coaching centre in Rewari district of Haryana.
