Iran-Israel crisis—Op Sindhu helps Indians get home

This is not the first time the Indian government has helped its citizens return home either from a strife-torn country or in the case of an emergency like earthquake or COVID

Spelling a major relief for their families, hundreds of Indian nationals from Iran are safely returning home under Operation Sindhu—the mission launched by the Indian government to evacuate its nationals from Iran and Israel amid escalations of hostilities between the two countries.

The government has extended operations to Israel to help  evacuate Indians who ‘wish to leave’ Israel amid growing tensions.

However, this is not the first time that the Indian government has helped its citizens  return home whether it is from a strife-torn country or in the case of emergencies like earthquake and COVID.

Beginning with the 1990 Kuwait Airlift when as many as 170,000 Indians were evacuated by airlift during the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in August–October 1990, India has launched several operations to bring nationals home.

During the Kuwait Airlift, the then Foreign Minister I.K. Gujral was instrumental in getting Iraq to cooperate in the efforts that also led the flag carrier of India into the Guinness Book of World Records for the most people evacuated by a civil airliner. Some prominent Kuwait-based Indians also helped in the government’s endeavour.

Other bring-Indians-home efforts include Operation Sukoon (Lebanon, 2006) when around 1,764 nationals were evacuated by naval vessels during the Lebanon war; Operation Safe Homecoming (Libya, 2011) when around 15,000 Indians were rescued via sea and air during the Libyan civil war; Operation Maitri (Nepal earthquake, 2015) when around 5,000 citizens were airlifted after the devastating earthquake and Operation Raahat in the same year when around 4,700 Indians and 960 foreign nationals were evacuated from Yemen during conflict zone operations

The list also includes evacuation from Brussels in 2016 and Operation Sankat Mochan in South Sudan in the same year.

During Operation Samudra Setu (2020) and Vande Bharat Mission (2020–21) six million nationals repatriated through commercial and special flights during the COVID-19 crisis

During Operation Devi Shakti in 2021, Indian and foreign nationals were evacuated after Taliban takeover in Afghanistan; in Operation Ganga (Ukraine, 2022) 18,000–25,000 Indian citizens were brought back from Ukraine during the Russia–Ukraine war.

In Operation Kaveri in 2023, Indians were evacuated amid the Sudan crisis and in the same year India also launched Operation Ajay to bring back its nationals from Israel during the Hamas-Israel conflict.

World celebrates International Day of Yoga: ‘yoga guides the world from conflict to cooperation, from stress to solutions’, says PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the worldwide celebrations on the International Day of Yoga from Visakhapatnam, extending greetings to people across India and the world on the occasion of the 11th edition that was observed on Saturday.

The International Day of Yoga is observed in recognition of yoga around the world on June 21 following its adoption by the United Nations in 2014. In his address to the UN General Assembly in 2014, PM Modi had proposed for Yoga to be celebrated internationally every year on the day

The PM said that 11 years on, yoga has become an integral part of the lifestyle of millions across the globe. “Yoga is for everyone and for all, beyond boundaries, beyond backgrounds, beyond age or ability. India teaches the value of ‘sarve bhavantu sukhinah’—the happiness and well-being of all is a sacred responsibility.”

Speaking about this year’s theme—Yoga for One Earth, One Health—the PM said it conveys a fundamental truth that the wellbeing of all life on Earth is interconnected.

“Yoga helps awaken us to this deep connection and guides us toward unity with the world. It teaches us we are not isolated individuals but integral parts of nature. Initially, we learn to care for our own health and wellness, but gradually, this care expands to our environment, society, and the planet. Yoga is a profound personal discipline that, at the same time, serves as a collective system – one that transitions individuals from me to we,” he said.

Health Minister JP Nadda who observed the day at the Kartavya Path said since 2015, yoga has found global acceptance as a holistic approach to well-being,” crediting the PM for making that happen.

“Yoga not only improves people’s health and fitness but also enhances mental clarity and emotional regulation, contributing to more balanced and fulfilling life.

“It is due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts that Yoga Day is being celebrated internationally today. During his address to the UN General Assembly in 2014,  the Prime Minister had proposed for Yoga to be celebrated internationally every year on 21st June, which was backed by over 170 countries.. Since 2015, yoga has found global acceptance as a holistic approach to well-being. Yoga not only improves people’s health and fitness but also enhances mental clarity and emotional regulation, contributing to more balanced and fulfilling life,” he said

Political leaders, including Union ministers and chief ministers, Armed Forces personnel and corporate heads, observed the day.

Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh led the Armed Forces by performing various asanas and breathing exercises with around 2,500 soldiers at Northern Command in Udhampur. He also credited PM Modi for popularising yoga globally. Highlighting that the practice provides a holistic approach to health and wellbeing, he termed yoga a universal solution to the problems faced by people in today’s fast-paced world such as stress, anxiety and depression.

“Yoga gives clarity to the people in chaos. It is an art, a science, a philosophy, and spirituality. Those who practice Yoga in their daily lives have control over their body and mind. It makes us proactive, not reactive,” Raksha Mantri said.

Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav

and Anupriya Singh Patel called yoga an invaluable gift of Indian culture, which has given the whole world the direction to live a healthy life.

Rekha Gupta performs Yoga at banks of Yamuna river

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday performed Yoga with her ministers and other participants at the Sonia Vihar Water Sports Club along banks of Yamuna, on the occasion of the 11th International Yoga Day.

During the event, she said that Delhi is now moving in a new direction. Yoga is not just a physical exercise, but a philosophy of life; it is a path to health, balance and self-confidence.

“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has made yoga an integral part of the lifestyle of the people and global consciousness. Today the whole world is saluting the cultural power and spiritual heritage of India,” she stated.

During Yoga with Yamuna, children performed yoga in the middle of the river, while others kayaked bearing Indian flags.

Speaking about her experience, the chief minister said, “I get reminded of my duties whenever I see the Yamuna. In an attempt to keep the Yamuna clean throughout Delhi, we have removed almost 1,000 tonnes of water hyacinth from it with the help of drones with help of the water department.”

During the event, tourism minister Kapil Mishra was also present who also performed yoga.

“Delhi gave a mandate in favour of Maa Yamuna and in favour of Yoga. With the power of people’s mandate, the country saw thousands of people doing yoga on the banks of Yamuna. After years, the Delhi government has organized an official event on International Yoga Day,” he said.

Meanwhile, calling out the previous AAP government’s inaction on cleaning the Yamuna river, Gupta said that the point of the exercise was to show the people of Delhi the ongoing efforts to clean the river.

Hitting out at the AAP, she said they associated yoga with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and did not celebrate the occasion.

“If they associate yoga with Prime Minister Modi, what can we do? Tomorrow, he might leave his food if he sees the PM’s association with it. After seeing the BJP government in Delhi, he left the national capital,” she charged.

Bihar: why BJP, RJD are trading charges over Ambedkar

Dalit vote bank, how the Dalit icon has become a big poll plank in poll-bound state

Speaking at a public rally at Siwan in poll-bound Bihar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday hit out at RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav for “insulting” BR Ambedkar.

“Ambedkar was against dynasty rule. But they (RJD and its allies) do not like it, so they have his portrait placed at their feet. On my way, I saw posters demanding an apology for this insult to Babasaheb.

“But there has been no apology. This is because they hold Dalits in contempt. In contrast, Modi has Babasaheb in his heart and would like to keep his portrait close to his chest,” the PM said.

A couple of hours later the RJD released a video taking swipes at PM Modi and his Bihar ally—JD-U’s Nitish Kumar.

Hosting AI lookalikes and footage from PM Modi’s public events, the video featured a poor man holding an umbrella with a song with words like ‘jumlo ki baarish’. The video showed AI-generated Nitish Kumar and PM dancing together while Bihar crumbled and RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav helping the common people.

“Weather warning in the interest of Bihar- today, there will be heavy rain of lies, false promises and illusions in Bihar, hailstones of false and tempting promises along with thunder, be careful,” Lalu Yadav also posted in Hindi.

According to RJD, the controversy was all due to a “camera angle” while the birthday celebration was going on. Lalu Yadav’s feet were on a sofa because of medical advice and a party supporter stood close carrying Ambedkar’s portrait

The BJP-led NDA is making a big hue and cry on this issue regarding Ambedkar—whose relevance to Bihar lies in his advocacy for social justice and equality, particularly for marginalised communities like Dalits

Analysts say that his philosophy and constitutional principles continue to be relevant in addressing issues of caste discrimination, social inequality, and empowerment of the oppressed in Bihar where Dalits have faced a long history of discrimination, social exclusion, and economic exploitation.

According to the 2011 Census, the Dalits constitute 16% of the population of Bihar, and 21 out of 23 Dalit castes are categorised as Mahadalits, which identify the most underprivileged among the class.

Srinagar:  Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday firmly rejected the proposal for a 113-kilometre canal that would divert surplus water from the Union Territory’s share of the Indus River system to Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.

Abdullah said his government would prioritise local needs before considering supplying water to other states. “Let us use our water for ourselves first. There is a drought-like situation in Jammu. Why should I send water to Punjab?” he told reporters.

Referring to past disputes, the Chief Minister highlighted the longstanding water-sharing conflict with Punjab, which dates back to the construction of the Shahpur Kandi barrage in Pathankot. Although an agreement was signed in 1979, it only materialised in 2018 following intervention by the Centre.

“Punjab already had water under the Indus Water Treaty. Did they give us water when we needed it?” Abdullah said. “Kitne saal unhone humein rulaya (They made us cry for so many years). For now the water is for us. We will use the water first, and then we will think about others.”

Make in India a ‘failure’, manufacturing at ‘record lows’, unemployment has ‘surged’, says Rahul Gandhi

Terming ‘Make in India’ a “failure”, senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today said that “manufacturing was at record lows and unemployment had surged in the country”. Interacting with technicians in Delhi’s Nehru Place, Gandhi said most products like mobiles are being “assembled” and “not being built” in India

“In Nehru Place, New Delhi, I met Shivam and Saif – bright, skilled, full of promise – yet denied the opportunity to fulfil it,” he wrote along a video he posted of the interaction on X.

“Modi ji has mastered the art of slogans, not solutions. Since 2014, manufacturing has fallen to 14% of our economy. ‘Make in India’ promised a factory boom. So why is manufacturing at record lows, youth unemployment at record highs, and why have imports from China more than doubled? Since 2014, manufacturing has fallen to 14 per cent of our economy,” he said.

“The truth is stark: we assemble, we import, but we don’t build. China profits. With no new ideas, Modi ji has surrendered. Even the much-hyped PLI scheme is now being quietly rolled back. India needs a fundamental shift – one that empowers lakhs of producers through honest reforms and financial support.

We must stop being a market for others. If we don’t build here, we’ll keep buying from those who do, he said, warning that clock is ticking,” he added.

Woman tied to tree, beaten in public view for husband’s failure to repay loan, NHRC takes suo motu cognizance

Issues notices to the state Chief Secretary and the DGP for a detailed report within two weeks

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that on June 16, 2025, a woman was tied to a tree and beaten up in public view by a moneylender when her husband failed to repay his loan at Narayanapuram village of Kuppam mandal in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh.

She was reportedly freed by the villagers.

The Commission has observed that the contents of the media report, if true, raise serious issues of violation of human rights.

It has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Andhra Pradesh, calling for a detailed report in the matter within two weeks.

According to an NHRC statement quoting media reports, “the husband of the victim had taken a loan of Rs 80,000 from a local moneylender about three years back but failed to repay the same. He had taken loans from the other villagers as well. As he was unable to repay the loans, he left the village and since then, his wife has been taking care of herself and her three children by working as a daily wage worker. She has also been repaying the loans to the people in instalments”.

Taking serious note of the incident, Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to take the strictest possible action against the accused. According to reports, Naidu insisted that such barbaric acts must never be repeated, directing district officials to provide  support to the victim’s family.

In poll-bound Bihar, PM slams RJD, Congress, unveils key projects

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today slammed Opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Congress saying that their only aim was—‘parivar ke saath, parivar ka vikas’—and not the people of Bihar.

“Everyone should get the opportunity to progress and no one should be discriminated against. This is the essence of our Constitution. That is why we (BJP) say ‘sabka saath sabka vikas’. But the ‘lantern’ (RJD symbol) and ‘panje’(Congress symbol) people say, ‘parivar ka sath, parivar ka vikas.’ This is the gist of their politics. They do not shy away from harming crores of families in Bihar for the benefit of their families. Babasaheb Ambedkar was against such politics, ” he said speaking in poll-bound Bihar’s Siwan.

The Nitish Kumar-led NDA government brought Bihar back on the path of development, he added, assuring the people that his government would continue to work for the development of the state.

The entire world is appreciating India for its development, and they are seeing how the country is becoming the world’s third-largest economic superpower. Bihar is going to play a very significant role in this direction, the PM asserted.

Slamming RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav for allegedly disrespecting BR Ambedkar’s photograph, PM Modi said “RJD will never apologise for what happened as they have no respect for Dalits and backwards,” said PM Modi.

The PM’s comment came days after a letter from the National Commission for Scheduled Castes to the state’s Chief Secretary sought information on the actions taken regarding the incident.

The controversy erupted after a video from Lalu’s birthday celebration went viral, showing a party supporter allegedly placing Dr Ambedkar’s portrait near the RJD chief’s feet.

The Bihar SC Commission also issued a notice to Yadav.

The PM also invoked the legacy of India’s first President Rajendra Prasad who was born in Siwan and his contribution.

PM Modi also launched several development projects worth more than Rs 5,900 crore in Siwan district related to water, rail, and power sectors during his visit. “I want to do more for Bihar, for every village, for every household, for every youth,  ”   the PM also said, listing the works done by the NDA government in Bihar in the last 10 years.

This is his fourth visit  to the state since January.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar,  Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha and other senior NDA leaders were also present at the rally.

The RJD-BJP alliance is gearing up for the critical assembly elections set to take place in the coming months.

Iran-Israel conflict—will US join, Trump keeps everyone guessing

US President Donald Trump on Thursday said that he will allow two weeks for diplomacy to proceed before deciding whether to launch a strike in Iran and get directly involved in its conflict with Israel.  There is a “substantial chance” for renewed negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear programme, he also said, according to reports.

Notably, a powerful Iran-backed militia in Iraq has vowed to attack US military bases in the region if Trump decides to enter the conflict, if that is a reason behind the step-back, remains to be seen

As Trump mulls his next move, the flight of America’s ‘doomsday planes’ to Joint Base Andrews in Washington on Tuesday night generated a whole lot of speculation.

Dubbed as ‘doomsday plane’, the Boeing E-4B Nightwatch is the US military’s most secretive aircraft. It serves as an airborne military command center capable of operating through nuclear war or national catastrophe.

The mission stood out because of its unexpected route and  callsign, resulting in substantial buzz amid mounting tensions in the Middle East.

Some dismissed it as a routine flight, saying that E-4Bs frequently fly to maintain readiness. However, in politics, moves are often made for the sake of optics and sending a message. Was the flight one such move, also remains to be seen.
