SC’ rap on Rahul: ‘when Parliament is silenced, streets must roar’ says Congress; analysts also talk of ‘unresolved’ LAC

“Issue of de-escalation of troops from along the LAC has been pending since October last year,” say some analysts; “In Modi’s India, asking questions is branded “anti-national.” Silence is patriotism, and the “True Indian” badge is reserved for the timid, the blindfolded, and the spineless,” says Congress

Nine months after India and China announced disengagement of troops from two friction points from along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the issue remains active both politically as well as strategically.

The Supreme Court’s sharp remarks against the Congress leader for his remark on Chinese occupation on Indian land on Monday led to a range of opinions—from a very angry reaction from his party to some analysts questioning the status of “buffer zones” on LAC and the LAC issue remains “unresolved”.

Some videos were also posted on social media as “proof” that Gandhi visited Ladakh where “local people told him that Chinese have captured our land.”

The BJP, meanwhile, launched a scathing attack on the Congress leader, questioning whether he was aiding enemy nations instead of supporting India’s sovereignty and national security.

What SC said

“If you are a true Indian, you would not say such a thing,” the SC said, censuring Gandhi over his alleged remarks during the Bharat Jodo Yatra.

“You are the leader of the opposition. Why don’t you say things in Parliament, why do you have to say it on social media?” the judges questioned, also asking the basis of his allegation.

“How do you know that 2,000 sq km of Indian territory has been occupied by the Chinese? Were you there? Do you have any credible material?

“Why do you make these statements without having any material? If you are a true Indian, you won’t say such a thing,” the Bench said

‘Oh my lord’ !! says Congress

Gandhi’s counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi argued that if he can’t say things published in the Press, he can’t be a leader of opposition. Regarding the “true Indian” remark, he replied, “It is also possible that a true Indian will say that our 20 Indian soldiers were beaten up and killed, this is also a matter of concern.”

In his scathing statement, Congress’ KC Venugopal said “in Modi’s India, asking questions is branded “anti-national.” Silence is patriotism, and the “True Indian” badge is reserved for the timid, the blindfolded, and the spineless.”

“When Parliament is silenced, the streets must roar.

“The issue of Chinese incursions is not just serious, it strikes at the heart of national sovereignty. We have repeatedly demanded answers, both inside and outside Parliament.

“But this Government, in its delirium to peddle propaganda and project hollow bravado 24×7, is too afraid to face real questions in Parliament.

“When a government fails so spectacularly to defend our borders, it is every citizen’s moral obligation to hold it accountable.

“But in Modi’s India, asking questions is branded “anti-national.” Silence is patriotism, and the “True Indian” badge is reserved for the timid, the blindfolded, and the spineless, he said, ending with a sarcastic “Oh my Lord!!’

That comment appeared to be directed at the court

‘Unresolved’ LAC, ‘buffer zones’

In October 2024 after South Block announced a breakthrough in India-Chinese border talks and the disengagement process started at the LAC, the government maintained that troops will now return to pre-2020 positions but those in know of developments say “buffer zones” was not included in the patrolling arrangement

In December, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar told the Lok Sabha that moratorium on patrolling in the buffer zones created between February 2021 and September 2022 in some locations along the India-China LAC to end the military stand-off “can be revisited as the situation demands”,

“It is not about this 2000 sq-km, whether this figure is right or wrong, it is about the rationale of having a moratorium on patrolling despite China’s repeated moves to push the LAC westward into the territory of India,” analysts say.

In June/ July, India twice pressed upon China for resolving ‘issues’ along the LAC.

“The two sides do not have a demarcated border and LAC acts as a de-facto boundary. The issue of de-escalation of troops from along the LAC has been pending since October last year when the two sides agreed to dis-engage from two friction spots,” they add.

‘Banke Bihari’ temple issue—SC questions Adityanath Govt over ‘hurry’ to bring ordinance to set up trust

There have also been protests against the proposed corridor, both from those managing the temple’s affairs as also shopkeepers and business owners who fear loss of livelihood. Reecently UP Power Minister AK Sharma faced a massive protest from the Sewayats who did not let him do ‘darshan’ and pulled the curtain down on the idol as soon as he reached there. Those  opposing the Rs 600-crore corridor were prepared with the protest, say those in know of  developments, adding that the minister was not even given ‘prasad.’

The Supreme Court on Monday invoked Lord Krishna to whom the Shri Banke Bihari Temple in Vrindavan is dedicated, while also questioning the Uttar Pradesh government’s “hurry” to bring an ordinance to manage the temple and the proposed redevelopment of a corridor using temple funds.

The case revolves around the management of the decades-old temple and the Adityanath-led state government’s attempt to manage its affairs. There have also been protests against the proposed corridor, both from those managing the temple’s affairs as also the shopkeepers and business owners in the vicinity who fear loss of livelihood.

“Lord Krishna was the first mediator … .please try to mediate the matter,” the court was quoted as saying while proposing a committee to settle the issue. At the same time, it also questioned the “tearing hurry” to pass the Uttar Pradesh Shri Banke Bihari Ji Mandir Nyas Ordinance, 2025 to set up a trust for managing the affairs of the shrine. The constitutional validity of the ordinance has been challenged with petitioners arguing it infringes on the temple’s autonomy as a private religious institution.

While questioning the Government, it indicated handing over the administration to a committee headed by a retired judge.

The issue

Around November 2023, the Allahabad High Court allowed the state to develop a corridor around the temple to enhance facilities for pilgrims, but restrained it from using money from the bank account of the deity for this.

In May 2025, during the course of hearing a matter related to the administration and safety of temples in the Braj region, the SC allowed an interlocutory application filed by the state and allowed it to use the temple funds for buying 5 acres of land around it for the corridor project. However, it directed that the land “shall be in the name of the deity/ (temple) trust.”

On May 26, the state brought out the ordinance for setting up a trust to manage the shrine.

It was in this context that Justice Surya Kant asked Additional Solicitor General K M Nataraj, who appeared for the state, “what was the tearing hurry for the ordinance?” as per reports

The state argued that it was a public temple and those who had challenged the ordinance and the May order had no locus standi as they are not part of its management. “…no recognised management committee is there. These are all unauthorised people,” Nataraj was quoted as saying.

Justice Kant said temple funds will have to be utilised for pilgrims and cannot be pocketed by private persons. “If the state wanted to carry out any development, what prevented it from doing so as per the law? Whether land is private or not, that issue can be adjudicated by a court. The state is coming in a clandestine manner, not allowing them to be heard. We don’t expect this… The state should have informed them, in all fairness,” he added.

The bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi orally proposed to withdraw the May 15 judgement in which the SC allowed the state government to use temple funds, as per reports

Banke Bihari temple

The state wants to control and build a corridor to provide basic amenities to pilgrims.

However, calling public amenities state’s “responsibility”, Justice Kant cited the development of the area around the Golden Temple in Amritsar to say “that kind of initiative can be there, instead of using legislative power, etc,” he said.

The Banke Bihari temple is among the most visited pilgrimage sites in northern India and is managed by a hereditary priesthood that oversees daily rituals and temple administration. The demand for redevelopment arose after a stampede-like incident occurred during Janmashtami celebrations in 2022.

The temple has been privately managed by the descendants and followers of Swami Haridas for a long time but internal differences among the sewayats (priests) have also been a longstanding issue.

However, the issue goes way beyond the management of the temple.

Recently UP Power Minister and close confidante of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, AK Sharma, had to face a massive protest from the ‘Sewayats’ of the temple. They did not let him do ‘darshan’ and pulled the curtain down on the idol as soon as he reached there. Those opposing the Rs 600-crore corridor were prepared to protest,  say those in know of the  developments, adding that the minister was not even given ‘prasad.’

‘If you are a true Indian, you won’t say such a thing’, SC raps Rahul

“How do you know China occupied 2,000 sq-km of land,” It says but stays proceeding in trial court against the Congress leader over alleged derogatory remarks about Indian Army during Bharat Jodo Yatra

“If you are a true Indian, you would not say such a thing,” the Supreme Court today censured Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his alleged remarks about the Indian Army during his Bharat Jodo Yatra. The Apex Court, however, stayed the proceedings initiated in the matter against the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha before a Lucknow court. A Bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh Government and the complainant in the case, according to reports.

Appearing for Gandhi, senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi submitted that if the leader of opposition cannot raise issues, it would be an unfortunate situation. “If he can’t say these things which are published in the Press, then he can’t be a leader of opposition,” Singhvi said.

Regarding the  Bench’ true Indian remark, he replied, “It is also possible that a true Indian will say that our 20 Indian soldiers were beaten up and killed, this is also a matter of concern.”

To this the top court said “when there is a conflict across the border, is it unusual to have casualties on either side?” Being a responsible leader of opposition he should do it at a proper forum to raise such questions, it added

Singhvi also said the complaint was nothing but an attempt to harass the petitioner.

The top court has issued notice on the plea while seeking response in three weeks and stayed the proceedings in the Lucknow trial court.

The Allahabad High Court on May 29 dismissed Gandhi’s plea.

Delhi assembly goes fully solar as monsoon session begins

File Photo

In a landmark move towards sustainability, the Delhi Legislative Assembly has become the first in the country to function entirely on solar power. The Monsoon Session, which begins today, will be powered by a newly inaugurated 500-kilowatt rooftop solar plant, marking a significant shift in how government buildings approach energy use.

The solar facility was officially inaugurated on Sunday by Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal.

Speaking at the event, Meghwal lauded the initiative as a convergence of sustainability, technological modernization, and democratic governance.

“Delhi Assembly is setting a precedent by blending environmental consciousness with administrative innovation. This is where climate responsibility meets digital empowerment,” he said, also unveiling the Assembly’s new e-Vidhan system aimed at making legislative processes paperless.

Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta called the initiative a blueprint for institutional environmental responsibility.

He noted that the Assembly building, constructed in 1912 and formerly housing India’s first Parliament, now stands as a symbol of both heritage and progress.

“The solar shift is expected to save the Assembly approximately Rs15 lakh every month, translating to around Rs 1.75 crore annually,” Gupta said.

The opening day of the Monsoon Session will also feature the presentation of two significant audit reports by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India — one on the State’s finances for 2023–24, and another focusing on the welfare of construction workers up to March 2023.

In a major education policy move, Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood is set to introduce the Delhi School Education Bill, 2025. The proposed legislation seeks to curb arbitrary fee increases in private schools across the Capital.

A trial of the new e-Vidhan digital platform is scheduled for 11:00 am, followed by the formal House proceedings at 2:00 pm, which will run entirely on solar-generated electricity, without relying on traditional power sources.

Anti-terror operation in Kulgam enters 4th day, two terrorists killed so far

Srinagar –  A joint anti-terror operation by the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and CRPF continued for the fourth consecutive day on Monday in the Akhal area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

The encounter began on Friday after security forces received intelligence inputs about the presence of a group of heavily armed terrorists in the dense forested region. So far, two terrorists have been reported killed. While the body of one local militant has been recovered, the second body is yet to be retrieved due to ongoing firing and the difficult terrain.

Intermittent gunfire and occasional blasts have been heard from the area. Security forces are using drones and helicopters to locate and neutralize the terrorists, who are believed to be hiding in well-concealed positions and firing from multiple directions.

Three security personnel have been injured in the gunfight.

Police sources said five terrorists were believed to be present in the area at the start of the operation, including at least two or three foreign militants trained in jungle warfare.

This is the third major encounter in Jammu and Kashmir in the past week. In an earlier operation, three Pakistani terrorists involved in the April 22 Pahalgam massacre – in which 26 civilians were killed – were killed. On Thursday, two more infiltrators were killed near the Line of Control in Poonch after they crossed over from Pakistan.

SIR dinner diplomacy, protest-How BJP presented common ground to disparate India bloc

Ministers in huddle; SIR has become a common meeting point to bring the bloc back together despite differences, at times contradictory, opinions on some issues for example Gandhi’s recent remarks equating the RSS and the CPI(M) which sparked unease within the INDIA bloc.

File photo

For the first time since the Narendra Modi Government returned in its 3.0 avatar, INDIA bloc partners believe they have a concrete common agenda in the form of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar to take on the PM and the ruling side BJP-led NDA.

On Thursday (August 7), India bloc leaders will meet at the residence of Leader of Opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi. They are also planning to take out a protest march to the office of the Election Commission of India on August 8 against the SIR, according to sources in know of developments

Observers say politically it is an opportune moment for the opposition to target the Modi Government given its collective agreement against the way voters’ revision is being done in Bihar. They have been meeting for Parliament floor strategy meetings on this issue but by bringing the protest on streets, they expect a wider traction.

For regional parties having substantial Non-Hindu voters’ base like TMC, Samajwadi Party and DMK, it is a matter of survival. Assembly elections are due in respective states, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu next year and what better way to create buzz than an issue with great polarizing potential.

The SIR has become a common meeting point to bring the bloc back together despite differences, at times contradictory, opinions on some issues for example Gandhi’s recent remarks equating the RSS and the CPI(M) which sparked unease within the INDIA bloc. Left leaders raised the issue during the alliance’s virtual meeting according to sources, warning that such statements could send the wrong message to cadres on the ground.

Recently Gandhi said in Kerala that he was fighting both the RSS and the CPI(M) ideologically, but his main complaint against them is their lack of “feelings” for the people.

Meanwhile, top leadership of the majority of the INDIA bloc partners are expected to be present at the dinner at Gandhi’s residence and the protest march the following day.

The Aam Aadmi Party, which has declared that it is not part of the bloc anymore, is expected to skip both events, but they will continue to support the agitation against the SIR inside the Parliament. Their issue is separate, they are Congress’ rivals in Punjab and don’t want to confuse voters.

Jaitley ‘threatened’ Rahul, Congress persists; BJP says ‘fake news’

Reacting to BJP terming Gandhi’s claim as “fake news, ” saying that Jaitley passed away on August 24, 2019, while the draft Farm Bills brought to the Union Cabinet on June 3, 2020, and the laws enacted in September 2020,  Congress said the comments “were in the context of the Land Acquisition and Rehabilitation Bill of 2013 and the Model Agricultural Produce and Livestock Marketing Act.”;  “he (Arun Jaitley) forgot Rahul Ji is a Gandhi, not a Savarkar.”

The BJP has rubbished the charge but the Congress is pressing with claim that late BJP leader Arun Jailey did come to 10 Janpath (mother Sonia Gandhi’s residence) to meet Rahul Gandhi “carrying a threat.”

Reacting to BJP terming Gandhi’s claim as “fake news,” saying that Jaitley passed away on August 24, 2019, while the draft Farm Bills brought to the Union Cabinet on June 3, 2020, and the laws enacted in September 2020, Congress said the comments “were in the context of the Land Acquisition and Rehabilitation Bill of 2013 and the Model Agricultural Produce and Livestock Marketing Act.”

“The Congress, led by Rahul Gandhi vehemently opposed these anti-farmer laws. It is in this context that the late Arun Jaitley came to 10 Janpath to meet Rahul Gandhi carrying a threat. But he forgot that Rahul Ji is a Gandhi, not a Savarkar,” wrote Khera

Addressing Congress’ annual legal conclave at the Vigyan Bhawan, Rahul said: “I remember when I was fighting the farm laws — he’s not here anymore, so I really shouldn’t say it, but I will — Arun Jaitley ji was sent to me to threaten me.”

He went on to add: “He (Arun Jaitley) said to me, ‘If you carry on down this path, opposing the government and fighting us on the farm laws, we will have to take action against you. I looked at him in the face and said, I think you don’t know or have an idea who you’re talking to. Because, we are Congress people, and we’re not cowards. We never bend; the superpower British couldn’t bend us and who the hell are you?”

‘Fake news,’ BJP said

BJP hit back saying the farm laws were brought in 2020 while Jaitley passed away in 2019.

IT cell head Amit Malviya wrote on X: “Fake News Alert. Rahul Gandhi claims that Arun Jaitley approached him to water down his opposition to the 2020 farm laws. Let’s set the record straight—Arun Jaitley ji passed away on August, 24 2019. The draft Farm Bills were brought to the Union Cabinet on June 3, 2020. The laws were enacted in September 2020,” he said.

Former MP and SAD leader Naresh Gujral added to it saying that “Akali Dal was part of the NDA, and we left them on the issue of the farm laws.”

“No BJP leader threatened us, forget about Arun Jaitley, who was a thorough gentleman. So when the leader of the opposition speaks like this, he only damages his own credibility, I would urge him to be more careful in the future,” he said, expressing “shock and pained” over what Gandhi said about his “late dear and close friend Arun Jaitley ji.”

“The whole world knows that he (Arun Jaitley) was a true democrat. Everybody knows he was a gentleman who would never use this kind of threat or this kind of dialogue. When Mr Gandhi says things like that, he only hurts his own credibility,” said Gujral.

Arun Jaitley’s son Rohan also slammed Rahul over his remarks, asking the Congress leader to “let the departed Rest in Peace”.

“To suggest Arun Jaitley ji approached him for anything at all is factually incorrect and misleading,” he said.

Sit and listen, advises Congress

Congress retaliated saying that “the Farm Laws of 2020 were not the only anti-farmer legislations of the BJP government. They were the culmination of a long, deliberate, anti-farmer agenda that the BJP government had been cooking up in its cauldron of destructive policy.”

Advising the “uninitiated who have been jumping since the morning to sit down and listen,” Khera wrote: “the first blow came in December 2014 itself, when Modi resorted to diluting the Land Acquisition and Rehabilitation Bill of 2013. Then in 2017 came the so‑called Model Agricultural Produce and Livestock Marketing Act – another backdoor assault on farmers’ rights.

“The Congress, led by Rahul Gandhi vehemently opposed these anti-farmer laws. It is in this context that the late Arun Jaitley came to 10 Janpath to meet Rahul Gandhi carrying a threat. But he forgot that Rahul Ji is a Gandhi, not a Savarkar.

“Nevertheless, what matters is not who conveyed the threat but on whose behalf was it being conveyed. The hand behind it was the (Prime Minister Narendra Modi)Modi- (Home Minister Amit Shah)Shah duo. This was never about one Bill or one Act – it was about crushing Rahul Gandhi’s fierce, unyielding defence of India’s farmers or the Indian people in general. The intention of the threats was to silence us but they have only ever strengthened our resolve,” he added

Who is Prajwal Revanna, the high-profile politician sentenced to life for rape

Prajwal Revanna is the grandson of former Prime Minister and JD(S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda; The former Hassan MP was suspended from JD(S) after the cases were filed against him

Former MP and suspended JD(S) leader Prajwal Revanna was on Saturday sentenced to life imprisonment in a rape and sexual harassment case. Announcing the verdict the Special Court for MPs/MLAs Judge Santosh Gajanan Bhat also imposed a total fine of Rs 10 lakh on the accused.

There are four separate cases registered against Prajwal Revanna

The court had on Friday convicted the 34-year-old in one of the four sexual abuse and rape cases registered against him, reserving the sentencing for Saturday, according to reports

Arrested in May last year upon his arrival from Germany, Prajwal had been booked under various sections, including being in a position of control or dominance over a woman and committing rape on such a woman

The case

This particular case against Prajwal, who unsuccessfully contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Hassan in Karnataka, pertains to a 47-year-old woman working as a help at the family farmhouse in Holenarasipura in the Hassan district.

Prajwal Revanna, who claimed no wrong doing, called it a case of political jealousy and rivalry.

Breaking down in court, he appealed for a lesser punishment, according to reports.

He told the court that he was a BE Mechanical graduate and a meritorious student. He also claimed that none of the women had come out voluntarily to complain. They only started complaining six days before the Lok Sabha polls last year, he claimed, saying that hsi only  mistake  was “growing fast in politics”.

The cases came to light after pen-drives containing explicit videos allegedly involving Prajwal Revanna and his father were reportedly circulated in Hassan ahead of 2024 Lok Sabha polls there.

He was arrested by the SIT on May 31 last year upon arrival at Bengaluru Airport from Germany.

Who is Prajwal Revanna

Prajwal Revanna is the grandson of former Prime Minister and JD(S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda.

In 2015, he was among the 10 young aspiring politicians in India to be chosen by Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, UK, to be exposed to the British way of governance.

In 2019, Deve Gowda fielded Prajwal from Hassan for the Lok Sabha, himself moving to Tumkur.

Prajwal won from Hassan, becoming the only winner among the six candidates fielded by the party.

He was re-fielded from Hassan by JD(S), an NDA ally in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also campaigned for him.  Rival Congress attacked PM Modi and the BJP, accusing them of feilding and canvassing for Prajwal Revanna despite being informed by Karnataka BJP leaders about his “sexual misconduct.”

Prajwal Revanna failed to retain Hassan and the JD(S) suspended him from the party after the cases were filed against him.
