Priyanka vs Israel, why Reuven Azar’s retaliatory comments surprised many

Can an Ambassador tell residents of his “host” country ‘what to do and what to say

Israel’s Ambassador to India Reuven Azar reacted sharply to Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s allegations accusing Israel of genocide in Palestine.

Using strong language, Azar said, “what is shameful is your deceit. Israel Killed 25,000 Hamas terrorists. The terrible cost in human lives derives from Hamas’s heinous tactics of hiding behind civilians, their shooting of people trying to evacuate or receive assistance and their rocket fire.”

“Israel facilitated 2 million tonnes of food into Gaza while Hamas tries to sequestrate them, thereby creating hunger. Gaza population has grown 450% in the last 50 years, no genocide there. Don’t buy Hamas numbers,” he said, leaving many netizens wondering whether an Ambassador of any country can publicly comment on a sitting MP of his host country.

His language, in particular, drew equally sharp comments with some also pointing whether an Ambassador can tell residents of his “host” country what to do and what to say

Priyanka had tweeted, “The Israeli state is committing genocide. It has murdered over 60,000 people, 18,430 of whom were children. It has starved hundreds to death including many children and is threatening to starve millions.”

She also condemned global silence, stating, “Enabling these crimes by silence and inaction is a crime in itself”. She  criticized the Indian government, adding, “It is shameful that the Indian Government stands silent as Israel unleashes this devastation on the people of Palestine.”

The Congress general secretary has been raising voice against Israel’s actions in Gaza and expressing solidarity with Palestinians. Last year in December she was spotted carrying a handbag emblazoned with the word “Palestine” and Palestinian emblems, including a watermelon – seen as a symbol of Palestinian solidarity.

It followed a meeting with Abed Elrazeg Abu Jazar, Charge d’affaires of the Palestine Embassy, who has called on to congratulate the Congress leader on her election from Kerala’s Wayanad.

Earlier in 2024 Priyanka had also slammed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over what she had said were the Israel government’s “genocidal actions” in Gaza and accused his government of “barbarism”. The remarks came after Netanyahu defended Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza in a speech to the US Congress.

Three-member committee to probe Justice Verma case

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday announced the constitution of a three-member committee to investigate the corruption allegations against Justice Yashwant Verma in the backdrop of burnt cash recovered from his residence in Delhi.

The committee was formed after the Speaker received a resolution signed by members of ruling and Opposition parties seeking his removal.

Birla informed Lok Sabha that the committee will comprise Justice Aravind Kumar, Judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava, Chief Justice of the Madras High Court; and B V Acharya, a Senior Advocate at the Karnataka High Court who will present the report as soon as possible.

“In accordance with sub-section 2 of section 3 of the Judges (Judges) Act, 1968, I have constituted a committee consisting of the following 3 members to examine the grounds of request for removal of Justice Yashwant Verma from the post,” Birla said.

The Supreme Court of India had initiated a three-member in-house inquiry into allegations surrounding the discovery of sacks of burnt cash in a storeroom at the official residence of Justice Yashwant Verma, a senior Delhi High Court judge, after a fire broke out on March 14, 2025.

This inquiry had led to his repatriation to the Allahabad High Court, sparking protests and an indefinite strike by Allahabad lawyers. Justice Verma was in Bhopal when the fire broke out, while his daughter and his elderly mother were at home. Justice Verma has denied any knowledge of the cash, suggesting it may be part of a deep conspiracy against him.

Akhilesh Yadav jumps police barricade, detained

A high voltage drama unfolded on Monday when Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav was seen jumping over a police barricade and later detained along with Congress MPs Rahul and his sister Priyanka Gandhi while marching from Parliament to Election Commission of India.

The protest march was being carried out by Opposition bloc INDIA against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar and allegations of “voter fraud” during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

INDIA bloc’s protest march to the Election Commission of India (EC) from Parliament was met by Delhi Police.

Ahead of the opposition’s march to the Election Commission over “poll fraud”, Delhi Police had said no one has sought permission for holding the protest.

A group of over 300 MPs from the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were participating in the march which began at around 11.30 am.

Delhi police deployed personnel and put up barricades at multiple points along the route to maintain order and prevent any untoward incident during the INDIA bloc protest march.

Additional security vehicles and quick reaction teams were also stationed in the vicinity of the EC office and surrounding roads to ensure smooth traffic flow.

The protest march came days after Rahul Gandhi’s press conference of last Thursday, in which he presented what he termed as an “atom bomb” of proofs over poll body resorting to “vote chori”.

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party leaders protested in Deoria after the detention of Samajwadi Party national president Akhilesh Yadav in Delhi.

After this incident, SP leaders of Deoria gathered at Subhash Chowk intersection in the afternoon. District President of Yuvajan Sabha Ranveer Yadav called this an attack on democracy. The workers were demanding the release of Akhilesh Yadav. Traffic was affected at the intersection due to the protest.

Ex-Pentagon official calls Asim Munir “Osama in suit”

Former Pentagon official Michael Rubin slammed Pakistan army chief Asim Munir over his recent nuclear rhetoric, saying that Islamabad was behaving like “a rogue state” with the war mongering.

Speaking to a news agency, Rubin compared Munir with Osama Bin Laden, the terrorist behind the 9/11 attack and said that threats on American soil were unacceptable.

The remarks came after Field Marshal Asim Munir threatened that if Pakistan “goes down”, it would take half the world down with it.

The comments were reportedly made during a meeting in Tampa, Florida, in the presence of US military officials.

“Pakistan’s threats on American soil are completely unacceptable,” Rubin said in an interview with the news agency.

“Americans look at terrorism through the lens of grievance…They don’t understand the ideological underpinnings of many terrorists. Asim Munir is Osama bin Laden in a suit,” he said.

Rubin further noted that Munir’s remarks are raising questions in many people’s minds about whether Pakistan can fulfil the responsibilities of being a state.

“The Field Marshal’s rhetoric is reminiscent of what we’ve heard from the Islamic State,” he said.

Earlier India slammed Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir for his latest remarks on Islamabad’s “nuclear prowess,” asserting that New Delhi would not yield to “nuclear blackmail.”

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal urged the international community to note the “irresponsibility emanating from such threats.”

“India has made it clear it will not give in to nuclear blackmail. We will continue all necessary steps to safeguard our national security… Nuclear sabre-rattling is Pakistan’s stock-in-trade,” he said.

Steep tariffs on India “big blow” to Moscow: Trump

US President Donald Trump has said that its steep tariffs on India over its import of Russian oil have dealt a “big blow” to Moscow’s economy, which he said was not performing well.

“I think Russia has to get back into building their country. It’s a massive country…They have tremendous potential in Russia to do well. They are not doing well. Their economy is not doing well now because it’s been very well disturbed by this,” he said.

“Doesn’t help when the President of the United States tells Their largest or second-largest oil buyer that we’re putting a 50 per cent tariff on you if you buy oil from Russia. That was a big blow,” he added.

He said that no one would be this tough and I haven’t stopped there. “I was gonna do things far bigger than that but I got a call that they wanted to meet and I wanted to know what they wanted to meet about.”

US President Donald Trump has slapped an additional 25 percent tariff on India along with additional tariffs of 25 per cent on Indian imports, taking the total tariffs imposed on Indian goods to 50 percent.

After the announcement of tariffs last week, US President Trump ruled out the possibility of trade talks with India until the issue of tariffs is resolved. When asked whether he expects increased trade negotiations with India after announcing 50 per cent tariffs, Trump said, “No, not until we get it resolved.”

Meanwhile, India is considering announcing tariffs countering the United States’ punishing 50 per cent tariffs on steel, aluminium and their derivatives from India.

India hits back at Pak Army Chief’s nuclear threats

India follows a declared No First Use (NFU) policy, committing to use nuclear weapons only in retaliation to a nuclear attack. Pakistan, however, does not follow NFU and keeps policy deliberately ambiguous in mind India’s conventional military superiority

Jaiswal called it “regrettable” that such statements were made from the soil of a “friendly third country” — the United States.

On Sunday in Tampa, Florida, Munir reportedly said, “If we go down, we will take down half the world.” He also threatened India over the Indus Waters Treaty: “We will wait for India to build a dam, and when it does so, we will destroy it with 10 missiles.” This was Munir’s second visit to the US in under two months.

Modi inaugurates 184 multi-storey flats for MPs

PM inaugurates newly constructed flats for Members of Parliament, in New Delhi on August 11, 2025.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated 184 newly constructed Type-VII Multi-Storey Flats for Members of Parliament at Baba Kharak Singh Marg in New Delhi.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, he said that recently he had inaugurated the Common Central Secretariat, known as Kartavya Bhavan, at Kartavya Path and today, he had the opportunity to inaugurate a newly constructed residential complex for Members of Parliament.

The PM highlighted the four towers of the complex—Krishna, Godavari, Kosi, and Hooghly—named after four great rivers of India, remarking that these rivers, which give life to millions, will now inspire a new stream of joy in the lives of public representatives.

He added that the tradition of naming rivers binds the nation in a thread of unity. “The new complex will enhance the ease of living for MPs in Delhi. The availability of government housing for MPs in Delhi will now increase,” he said.

Acknowledging the challenges faced by first-time elected MPs in securing housing in Delhi, Modi stated that the newly constructed buildings will help eliminate these difficulties.

He informed that over 180 MPs will reside together in these multi-storey buildings and underscored the significant economic dimension of the new housing initiative.

“21st-century India is as eager for development as it is sensitive to its responsibilities”, exclaimed Modi, remarking that while the nation builds Kartavya Path and Kartavya Bhavan, it simultaneously fulfills its duty of delivering piped water to millions of citizens.

He added that as the country completes new housing for its MPs, it also facilitates homeownership for 4 crore poor families through the PM Awas Yojana.

He emphasized that while the nation constructs a new Parliament building, it is also establishing hundreds of new medical colleges. He affirmed that the benefits of these initiatives are reaching every section of society.
