AAP launches ‘Happiness Curriculum’ in government-run schools in Delhi

The Aam Aadmi Party government on July 2 launched its ‘Happiness Curriculum’ for nursery to class 8 students studying in government-run schools in Delhi.

Dalai Lama graced the occasion and said that “India can lead the world by uniting the modern and ancient knowledge and help it overcome negative emotions of the mankind.”

“Modern education focuses on material values and has nothing to offer regarding inner peace. Only India has the ability to combine modern education with ancient knowledge which is necessary for fulfillment of human emotions,” Dalai Lama said.

During the launch Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said “‘Happiness curriculum’ launched today as the third stage of reforms in education sector initiated by his government after focusing on infrastructure development and motivation of teachers at the government schools.”

Under the initiative, students will daily attend a 45 minutes ‘happiness period’ and will learn art of meditation, moral values, patriotism, among other activities. For nursery and KG students, the classes will be held twice a week.

Under the initiative, teachers will observe and maintain the diary of the day-to-day behavior of the children, their communication content and thinking abilities. Teachers will also talk about feelings of students on issues such as peer pressure, exam pressure, the expectation from family and bullying etc.

“The curriculum is signed and prepared by a team of 40 Delhi government teachers, educators and volunteers over a period of six months, said Manish Sisodia, deputy chief minister and in charge of Education department of Delhi government.

He added that 10 lakh students and 50,000 teachers will participate in these classes every day.

Kejriwal added, “Education is our topmost priorities. The Centre and other state governments should give one year, focusing on education at a war footing.”

Cauvery Management orders Karnataka to release 31.24tmcft water to Tamil Nadu

The Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) in a meeting on July 2 ordered Karnataka to release 31.24tmcft of water to Tamil Nadu for the month of July.

“The authority directed Karnataka to ensure balance quantity (of water) for July, adjusting the excess quantity of water realized by Tamil Nadu in June, subject to the assessment and recommendations by the regulation committee,” said CWMA Chairman Masood Hussain.

The decision comes in wake of Karnataka planning to file an appeal in the Supreme Court against the setting up of the CWMA and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) on the grounds that the move should have been discussed in the Parliament.

Hussain added that the meeting urged Karnataka to release water from the Cauvery as per the apex court ruling, and it was decided that the existing arrangement for supplying water to Puducherry by Tamil Nadu will continue.

DK Shivakumar, minister Karnataka water resources, reportedly said that the state will abide by the CWMA’s decision.

Extending support to the same the BJP suggests permanent Cauvery technical panel to assist the two state representatives in meetings conducted by the CWMA and CWRC.

State of economy was much worse than expected in 2014: PM Modi

“The state of the economy was much worse than expected when BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government came to power in 2014. Things were terrible. Even the budget figures were suspicious,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in an interview to ‘Swarajya’.

India is now the fastest growing large economy of the world with strong fundamentals to drive further growth, he added.

PM Modi while highlighting the focus on reforming, strengthening and transforming of the Indian economy said, “In 2014, one of the key agendas of the BJP’s election campaign was highlighting the dismal management of the Indian economy, ironically under an economist PM and a know-it-all Finance Minister. We all knew the economy was in the doldrums.”

While highlighting UPA government’s failure under the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Modi said, “In 2014, industry was leaving India. India was in the Fragile Five. Experts believed that the ‘I’ in BRICS would collapse. Public sentiment was that of disappointment. In the midst of this, imagine a White Paper giving intricate details of the extent of damage.”

“We accepted this uncomfortable truth and hit the ground running from the very first day to stabilise things so that the Indian economy can be strengthened for the long haul. We tolerated a number of political allegations, we accepted political damage but ensured no damage to our country,” the Prime Minister added.

He straightway rejected the criticism on jobless growth while saying “We have data put out by state governments on employment. The previous Karnataka government claimed to have created 53 lakh jobs and the West Bengal government created 68 lakh jobs in the last term. Now, if states are all creating good numbers of jobs, is it possible that the country is not creating jobs?”

Kejriwal launches campaign demanding statehood for Delhi, seeks all parties support

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced on July 1 that Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will accelerate its campaign for demanding statehood for Delhi. He added that the AAP will submit 10 lakh letters from the residents of Delhi to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi under a signature campaign titled “Delhi Mange Apna Haq”, demanding full statehood while addressing a gathering of party workers at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.

“This is not an unconstitutional demand. The constitution says the Centre should appoint Lieutenant General, it does not say that the elected government cannot propose a name,” Kejriwal said.

During the launch of his campaign demanding statehood for Delhi Kejriwal said: “Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his campaign for the 2014 Lok Sabha election, had promised full statehood for Delhi and won seven Lok Sabha seats. He still has a year to go, if he does not work towards full statehood, Delhi will not give the BJP even one seat in the 2019 election.”

While seeking the support of all political parties he said, “It’s not just AAP’s fight … All parties should come together to support this demand. We will convene an all-party meeting soon to seek support.”

The AAP has released a telephone number and asked people to give a missed call on the same if they wanted to join the campaign.
