Triple Talaq Bill not to be tabled in this Rajya Sabha Session due to lack of consensus

Rajya Sabha (RS) Chairman Venkaiah Naidu on August 10 said that the Muslim Women Protection of Rights on Marriage Bill (Triple Talaq bill) will not be tabled in the Rajya Sabha this monsoon session due to lack of consensus between government and opposition. The bill will be tabled in the next session of the parliament.

“The Triple Talaq Bill will not be taken up today because no consensus could be built around it,” RS chairman Naidu said.

Today, during the RS session the Congress party launched a protest against the Prime Minister Narendra Modi government seeking answers from it over the alleged scam in Rafale fighter jet deal with France. It created uproar during the last day of the monsoon session.

Opposition leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, UPA chairperson and former Congress president, raised slogans against the government outside Parliament. She said that her party’s stand over Triple Talaq Bill is “absolutely clear” and that she won’t add anything to it.

Cabinet on August 9 approved inclusion of a provision of granting bail to men accused of giving instant triple talaq to their wives in the Muslim Women Protection of Rights on Marriage Bill.

Senior officials who spoke on condition of anonymity said that the amendments made in the bill notwithstanding, giving instant triple talaq or ‘talaq-e-biddat’ will continue to be illegal and void, and will attract a jail term of three years.

“The provision has been added to allow the magistrate to grant bail after hearing the wife,” said Union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad during a press briefing.

This was one of the demands of the Opposition.
