UN chief urges members to pay dues as international body faces financial crisis

The United Nations (UN) is reeling under alarming financial crisis and is also urging its member states to pay up to the international body, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said.

“Our cash flow has never been this low so early in the calendar year, and the broader trend is also concerning; we are running out of cash sooner and staying in the red longer,” Guterres said.

In a letter to UN staff, Guterres cited late payments by member states as the major reason behind looming financial crunch and said that UN will take some steps to reduce cost and will also propose several ways to states in order to improve financial stability at the UN.

This new cash shortfall is unlike those we have experienced previously, as of 30 June, core funding had a deficit of $139m, Guterres wrote in the letter.

“An organization such as ours should not have to suffer repeated brushes with bankruptcy. But surely, the greater pain is felt by those we serve when we cannot, for want of modest funds, answer their call for help,” Guterres wrote in the letter.

As of July 26, as many as 112 members, including India, have paid their regular budget dues in full. India made a payment of $17.91 million on January 29, 2018.

A total of 81 countries are yet to pay their regular budget dues. These nations include Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Seychelles, Brazil, Egypt, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Israel, Maldives, the United States and Zimbabwe.

Guterres said he has appealed to all members to pay their assessments on time and in full, and highlighted the risk of the troubling financial situation facing the UN.

World witnesses the longest “blood moon” eclipse of 21st century

India along with various other countries of the world witnessed the longest “blood moon” eclipse of the 21st century on Friday night.

During this rare phenomena, the Moon turned bright red.

According to Nasa, the total lunar eclipse lasted for one hour and 43 minutes. In India the eclipse started at around 11:44 PM on July 27, whereas the total lunar eclipse started at around 1:00 AM and lasted at around 2:43 AM on July 28.

A total lunar eclipse happens when Earth takes the position in a straight line between the moon and sun, blocking the direct sunlight.

When earth, moon, and sun are perfectly lined up, the Earth’s atmosphere scatters blue light from the sun, while bending red light onto the moon. This phenomenon gave the moon the name “blood moon” as it appears red in color.

Apart from India, the lunar eclipse was visible in parts of South-America, parts of Europe, Africa, Whole Asia, Australia and Eastern Africa.

“Are we not women Madam Minister?”

Sex workers across the country welcomed the timely intervention of the Honourable Speaker of the Lok Sabha  Sumitra Mahajan, to uphold the right of sex workers to approach the Ministry of Women and Child to discuss a proposed legislation that will have a tremendously adverse impact on their lives.

The National Network of Sex Workers (NNSW) condemned the statement of Maneka Gandhi, Minister for Women and Child Department on July 26, for making disparaging remarks about sex workers in the Parliament during a discussion on the Trafficking Bill 2018.

She stated during the response to the discussions in Lok Sabha, “I am going to be wicked. There are two types of representatives who came to me. One was the Victims of Trafficking and the other was sex workers. Dr. Tharoor accompanied the representatives of sex workers.”

The Hon Speaker immediately and forcefully stepped in to insist that sex workers had a legitimate appointment with the Minister, and that is not unparliamentary. The NNSW, representing sex workers across the country acknowledges the consistent commitment of Dr. Shashi Tharoor to highlight the issues of this marginalized community.

For the past two years since the first draft of the Bill was posted on the website, NNSW has attempted to highlight its grievances and specific concerns with the Bill. The concerns of over 250 activists, lawyers and civil society organizations on the proposed Bill, along with the list of signatories to the Coalition 260 were personally handed over to the Minister. However, as the Minister charged with respecting and upholding the dignity of all women in India, including women who in sex work; snide and improper remarks in Parliament, unfortunately, reemphasised the stigma with which society views sex workers. Sex workers are not a source of entertainment or snide laughter for MPs, but workers who earn so that their families have a chance at an equitable life, like all citizens of this country.

“Do we not have the right to be heard by Ministers, Governments, and Members of Parliament? Are we according to you so reprehensible that it is ok to make us the butt of your humor at the cost of dignity? Are we not citizens of India entitled to dignity? Are we not women Madam Minister?” asks the NNSW.

The joint statement released was signed by Jwala Shakti Samuh (JSS), Jharkhand Karnataka Sex Workers Union (KSWU), Karnataka Kerala Network of Sex Workers (KNSW), Kerala Me and My World, Andhra Pradesh Mitra, Maharashtra Muskan, Maharashtra Nirangal Federation, Tamil Nadu Saheli Sangh, Pune, Maharashtra Stree Sanghatan, Chota Udaipur Uttara Karnataka Mahila Okkuta (UKMO), Karnataka Vadamalar Federation, Tamil Nadu Veshya Anyay Mukti Parishad (VAMP), Maharashtra Kutch Mahila Vikas Sanstha (KMVS), Gujarat Sampada Grameen Mahila Sanstha (SANGRAM), Maharashtra Samraksha, Karnataka Sangama, Karnataka South India AIDS Action Project (SIAAP), Tamil Nadu Srijan Foundation (SRIJAN), Jharkhand Vikalp, Gujarat Women’s Initiatives (WINS), Andhra Pradesh.
