Amritsar MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla donates 20 lakh to Golf club, courts controversy

Congress Member of Parliament (MP) from Amritsar, Gurjeet Singh Aujla who donated Rs 20 lakhs to a golf club in Chandigarh from his MPLAD ( Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme) fund had courted controversy on Thursday.

Congress Lawmaker faced massive flak from Opposition Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)-BJP accusing him of misusing the fund meant for public-oriented development works.

The attack from the Akali Dal was led by the party’s president and former CM Parkash Singh Badal, who accused the Congress MP that he cannot give money for any development work outside his constituency.

To justify his action, Aujla said the Akali Dal was raising a non-issue and as an MP he was allowed to donate outside his constituency and the Deputy Commissioner has to ensure the donation was as per the provisions.

Moreover, he claimed that many Army veterans, including those who fought wars, were members of the club and the golf club offers free membership to 100 children who belong to economically weaker backgrounds.

Triple Talaq Bill Amendments: Cabinet approves provision of granting bail by magistrate

The Union Cabinet on August 9 approved inclusion of a provision of granting bail to men accused of giving instant triple talaq to their wives in the Muslim Women Protection of Rights on Marriage Bill, government sources said.

The opposition demanded provision of bail and under the amendments cleared on August 9, the magistrate would have powers to grant bail to the accused, the sources said.

The proposed amended law would only be applicable to instant triple talaq or ‘talaq-e-biddat’ and it would give power to the victim to approach a magistrate seeking “subsistence allowance” for her and minor children.

Giving away instant triple talaq will continue to be illegal and will attract a jail term of three years for the husband.

Cabinet proposed three amendments:

First, if the husband gives triple talaq instantaneously and breaks marriage then FIR shall only become cognizable when it is filed by the victim or blood relation or relation by marriage.

Second, it has been made compoundable – if the wife and the husband desire to settle their differences then the magistrate can compound the offense on appropriate terms and conditions.

Third and finally, magistrate can grant bail after hearing the wife.

Rajasthan: Vasundhara Raje government renames muslim villages

In a surprising move ahead of the assembly elections in Rajasthan, Vasundhara Raje led Rajasthan government has decided to rename eight villages, which had Muslim names.

For instance, the name of a village known as ‘Miyan ka Bara’ in Barmer district has now been changed to ‘Mahesh Nagar’.

To justify the move, the state government has explained that the change in the names of villages is done due to Hindu population residing in those villages and hence should have Hindu names.

Another reason is that renaming the villages will boost matrimonial proposals easier for the boys and girls in the village as the earlier name gave an impression that the village was inhabited by Muslims.

Recently, the Mughalsarai railway junction in Uttar Pradesh was officially renamed as Deen Dayal Upadhyay junction.

According to the reports, a proposal was sent by Rajasthan government to the Union Home Ministry to change the names of 27 villages. Though the ministry only allowed to change the name of eight villages.

IMF forecast: India’s GDP to grow at 7.5 % in 2019-20

International Monetary Fund (IMF)’s latest projection revealed that India’s gross domestic product (GDP) is to grow by 7.3% in the 2018-19 fiscal and 7.5% in 2019-2020 on strengthening of investment and robust private consumption.

The IMF in the report published on August 7, said that the near-term macroeconomic outlook for India is “broadly favorable.”

Experts believe that disruption caused due to the structural reforms, including November 2016 currency exchange initiative and the July 2017 Goods and Services Tax (GST), are over and growth projection will put the country on number 1 rank in terms of economic growth, beating China.

The IMF’s mission chief for India Ranil Salgado recently said that the country is on the track to become world’s fastest-growing emerging economy and that the reforms have started paying off.

Salgado added, “India now contributes, in purchasing power parity measures, 15% of the growth in the global economy, which is substantial.”

Report says:

Stability-oriented macroeconomic policies and progress on structural reforms continue to bear fruit” in the country

Growth is forecast to rise to 7.3% in fiscal year 2018/19 and 7.5% in 2019/20 on strengthening investment and robust private consumption

The current account deficit is projected to widen further to 2.6% of the GDP on rising oil prices and strong demand for imports, offset by a slight increase in remittances

Continued fiscal consolidation is needed to lower elevated public debt levels, supported by simplifying and streamlining the GST structure

Domestic risks pertain to tax revenue shortfalls related to continued GST implementation issues and delays in addressing the twin balance sheet problems and other structural reforms.

Systemic macro-financial risks persist, as the weak credit cycle could impair growth and the sovereign-bank nexus has created vulnerabilities
