Gangster Abu Salem sends legal notice to makers of ‘Sanju’ movie

Gangster Abu Salem has sent a legal notice to the makers of the movie ‘Sanju’. Salem alleged that the makers of the movie have portrayed wrong information about him.

According to the reports, Abu Salem’s lawyer has sent a legal notice to Director Raj Kumar Hirani, producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra, and the distributors of the movie ‘Sanju’.

In the notice, Salem also threatened the makers of Sanju movie with defamation case, if the scenes are not deleted within a period of 15 days.

The notice refers to a scene which was purportedly false, where Ranbir Kapoor (pictured as Sanjay Dutt) agrees on owning the arms and bullets in the year 1993 when the country was going through communal tension.

According to Salem’s lawyer, the above scene is defaming his client, as Salem never met Sanjay Dutt and did not supply arms and ammunition in the year 1993.

The gangster is serving a life sentence in jail after being found guilty in the 1993 Mumbai blasts.

Civil society organisations rebuke passage of anti-trafficking Bill by Lok Sabha

Civil society organisations have rebuked the passage of anti-trafficking Bill 2018 by the Lok Sabha on July 26. The Trafficking of Persons (Prevention, Protection and Rehabilitation) Bill, 2018, was introduced by Maneka Gandhi, Union Minister of Women and Child Development.

In a joint statement, they stated, “Various civil society representatives, labour unions, sex workers, activists, legal experts and human rights groups have condemned the Bill saying it was passed without scrutiny and examination which it desperately needs.”

The organisations have now urged the members of the Rajya Sabha to ensure that the Bill is “examined and evaluated and not hastily passed into law.”

The collectives of activists, lawyers, sex workers and transgender have been expressing concern over the lacunae in the Bill that in a manner undermine the rights and freedom of the stakeholders.

Passage of Bill

As touted, the comprehensive Bill that aims to prevent the peril of human trafficking focuses on the prevention, rescue and rehabilitation of the victims.

While presenting the Bill before the House, Union Cabinet Minister for Women and Child Development, Maneka Gandhi, said, “Human trafficking is a borderless crime. Special crimes need special attention. How can we stay silent when women and children are sold like goods. Let us make this Bill a reality today to protect and provide for the millions of victims who have suffered silently for years.”

Assuring that the Bill would incorporate missing points Gandhi said, “I assure that all the concerns of the members, if not addressed already in the anti-trafficking Bill 2018, will be incorporated in the rules.”

“This Bill is not intended to harass those social workers who are voluntarily in the profession… This is a Bill that has a compassionate view of people who have been victims of sex racket.”

Taking on the Bill presented by Gandhi, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor made remarks that the government is confused between the terms ‘persecution’ and ‘prosecution.’

Throwing light on the rights of the sex workers, Tharoor said, “Section 370 of the IPC is used extensively against sex workers in conjunction with Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act 1956 (ITPA) and there are numerous instances in which the police have threatened sex workers under this section, demanding bribes and even sex.”

Making a point on the rehabilitation funds, Tharoor said, “The trafficking Bill establishes a rehabilitation fund for victims of trafficking, but only Rs.10 crores has been allotted for it, whereas the government has spent Rs.4,343 crore on publicity since it came to power in May 2014. “

Gandhi made attempt to defend her stance on the legislation. In a reply to Tharoor, she said the House has received comments from two groups, one representing the victims and the other representing the sex workers.

“Tharoor represents the second group,” she said.

Recently, Tripti Tandon, Advocate and Deputy Director, Lawyers Collective, pointed out, “Those who have been involved in drafting the Trafficking Bill, which otherwise was an opaque and closed process, such as Kailash Satyarthi’s  Bachpan Bachao Andolan and Sunita Krishnan of Prajwala are bound to give full marks to it. But, if they are so confident of it, why should they oppose it being sent to a Standing Committee in Parliament? After all, scrutiny by a Parliamentary body will only improve the legal response to trafficking and not weaken it. Supporters of the Bill must have faith in democratic processes and Parliamentary institutions.”

RS Prasad says measures taken by WhatsApp to curb menace of fake news ‘not’ adequate

In wake of rise in incidents of mob lynching across the country Ravi Shankar Prasad, Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, on July 26 said that measures recently announced by WhatsApp to curb the menace of fake news are not adequate and the government wants them to come up with better technological solutions to filter the verified fake news and provocative messages.

While speaking on the issue of misuse of social media platform in the Parliament RS Prasad said, “They also plan to remove the forward button in case of video or audio message and they have informed that they will bring in fake news check mechanism. This is not adequate to meet the challenges. We have told them to come up with better technological solution so that misuse of the platform is avoided,”

He further added “Govt is committed to freedom of speech and privacy as enshrined in the constitution of India. The government does not regulate the content appearing on the social media. These social media though are required to follow due diligence as provided in section 79 of the IT Act 2000. They have also to follow Article 19(2) of the Constition and ensure that their platforms are not used to commit and provoke terrorism, extremism, violence and crime.”

“The government is cognizant that social media platforms are being used as vehicles of weaponization against India’s strategic interests, economic stability, etc, and the government is committed to take suitable action to deter this,’ the minister said in the Rajya Sabha.

While talking about the positive use of WhatsApp he said, “We should see both aspects. Social media is helping many students, small groups are exchanging information, farmers are using it. We need to introspect if you question the relevance of social media.”

PNB fraud case: PMLA Court summons Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi in Sept

A Special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Mumbai on July 26 has summoned absconding jeweler Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi in connection with the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case of over Rs 13,000 crore and has asked them to appear before the court on September 25 and 26 respectively or be declared Fugitive Economic Offenders.

Acting on a plea by the Enforcement Directorate in the PNB fraud case Nirav has been asked to appear before the special PMLA court on September 25 while Choksi is ordered to appear on September 26.

ED had recently moved the court seeking to declare the diamond traders as ‘fugitive economic offenders’ and to confiscate their assets worth Rs 3,500 crore regarding the case.

PMLA Court move comes in the backdrop of reports that prime accused of PNB fraud case Choksi had moved to Antigua from the United States and got a local passport.

Under the new Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill, 2018, a fugitive economic offender is defined as “a person against whom an arrest warrant has been issued in respect of a scheduled offence and who has left India so as to avoid criminal prosecution, or being abroad, refuses to return to India to face criminal prosecution”.

West Bengal Assembly passes bill to change state’s name to ‘Bangla’

The West Bengal (WB) Assembly on July 26 unanimously passed a bill to change the state’s name to ‘Bangla’. The resolution will now be sent to the Union Home Ministry for further approval. Once the bill is approved, West Bengal’s name will officially be changed to ‘Bangla’.

In August 2016, WB Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had proposed that the state be named Bangla in Bengali, Bangal in Hindi and Bengal in English. However, the Central Government had turned down the state government’s proposal.

One of the main reasons cited by West Bengal to change the name is because WB is always last in a list of states in alphabetical order whenever there was a meeting of all states or any event CM herself was supposed to address any meeting between the Union government and the states, West Bengal came at the bottom of the list alphabetically.

Before that in 2011 when Mamata Banerjee took the office of chief minister of the state, the state government had sent a proposal to the Centre for renaming West Bengal as “Paschim Bango”, but that too was rejected.

Indo-Pak ties not to witness turbulent times with Imran Khan’s victory: Shashi Tharoor

While final results of Pakistan elections 2018 are expected in the coming hours, speaking on the expected win of Imran Khan, leader Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Congress leader and former Foreign Minister Shashi Tharoor said that the Indo-Pak relations would not witness turbulent times with Khan’s victory.

Tharoor said that “We have seen two faces of Imran, one as a hardliner for the electorate and other as liberal which we saw in London and New Delhi. So, it cannot necessarily be turbulent weather for Indo-Pak relations.”

“I think it was completely predictable. For the last year also we have been hearing that the military wants a change, they want to get rid of Nawaz Sharif and his party and that they see Imran Khan as the most pliable potential,” he further added.

Tharoor stated “Imran is the largest single party but without majority by himself. He’ll depend on independents & small parties’ support, almost certainly Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) – which will follow military instructions which means if he does things military considers out of line, support can be pulled.”

Tharoor said that the Pakistan Army would want to ensure that the Prime Minister “doesn’t get out of hands or doesn’t get too independent”.
