Imran Khan takes oath as 22nd Prime Minister of Pakistan

Cricketer turned politician and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan on Saturday took oath as 22nd Prime Minister of Pakistan after his party won the highest number of seats in the general election.

The swearing-in ceremony was administered by Pakistan President Mamnoon Hussain.

PTI chief Khan was accompanied by his wife Bushra Bibi.

The ceremony was attended by former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu, legendary paceman Wasim Akram, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Zubair Mahmood Hayat, actor Javed Sheikh, singers Salman Ahmed and Abrarul Haq, Punjab Assembly speaker Pervez Elahi, Rameez Raja, caretaker minister Nasir-ul-Mulk, Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Chief of Air Staff Marshal Mujahid Anwar Khan and PTI leaders.

Khan’s party PTI bagged 176 seats while the opponent Sharif’s PML-N received 96 seats.

Telangana: CM K. Chandrashekhar Rao announces Rs 25 crore for flood hit Kerala

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao on Friday announced a contribution of Rs.25 Crore on behalf of state government to the rain and flood-affected Kerala.

Chief Minister of Telangana also instructed the Chief Secretary S.K.Joshi to immediately hand over the amount to Kerala state.

KC Rao also instructed the officials to dispatch Rs 2.5 crore worth RO machines to Kerala, in view of water getting polluted due to floods.

He also added, it is the responsibility of Telangana people to help Kerala in their trouble.

The Chief Minister urged the Telangana people to help in the rescue operations.

He also appealed to Industrialists, businessmen and entire Telangana society to donate to the State’s relief fund and arrangements would be done to hand over to the Kerala government.

Sikh store owner stabbed to death in US state of New Jersey

In another incident of attack on minorities, a Sikh man named Terlok Singh has been stabbed to death at his store in the US state of New Jersey. This is the third incident targeting the minority Sikh community in the country in past three weeks.

Singh was discovered dead by his cousin on August 16 in his store with an apparent stab wound in the chest.

According to media reports, the Essex County Prosecutor’s office is calling the incident a homicide.

The motive behind the killing was not immediately known.

Singh is survived by his wife and children who live in India. He owned the store to support his family.

A Sikh community member tweets about this tragic killing incident, “this is the third attack on a Sikh in the last three weeks. So tired of all this sadness.”

According to a news report, Singh ran his store for at least six years and a neighbor said he should not have had to worry about being attacked in his workplace.

In a similar incident on August 6 California, 71-year-old Sahib Singh was brutally attacked by Tyrone McAllister and a juvenile when the elderly man went on a morning walk.

Navjot Singh Sidhu arrives in Pakistan for Imran Khan’s oath taking ceremony

Former Indian cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu on Friday arrived in Lahore, Pakistan to take part in the oath-taking ceremony of Imran Khan as Prime Minister.

He arrived in Lahore via the Wagah border and would travel to Islamabad to attend Khan’s swearing-in ceremony which will be held on Saturday.

Sidhu used his poetic expression while interacting with reporters.

He said, “I have come as a friend, not a politician and have come to take part in my friend’s (Imran) oath’s ceremony”.

He was among the first cricketers from India to congratulate Imran Khan after his victory in Pakistan elections.

Former Indian cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, who were invited for oath-taking ceremony, declined the invitation citing personal engagements.

Former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee cremated with full state honors

Former prime minister and BJP stalwart Atal Bihari Vajpayee was cremated with full state honors at Smriti Sthal in Delhi on Friday.

Thousands of people from across India came together to join the funeral procession of the former prime minister. Huge crowd of people showered petals at the funeral procession and expressed their condolences.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with BJP chief Amit Shah, several union ministers, and many party leaders walked behind the carriage carrying the mortal remains of Vajpayee to the Rashtriya Smriti Sthal where the last rites were performed.

President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid final tribute to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at Smriti Sthal.

Political leaders including former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Rahul Gandhi were also present at the Smriti Sthal.

Leaders of Saarc and King of Bhutan also paid homage to Vajpayee.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee, 93, passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Thursday evening where he was being treated since last nine weeks.

As a mark of respect to the former prime minister, a seven-day mourning has been announced by the Central government.

Muzaffarpur shelter home case: CBI conduct raids at former Bihar minister Manju Verma’s residences

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on August 17 raided the three residences of Manju Verma, former Bihar Welfare Department Minister, in connection with the Muzaffarpur shelter home case, officials said.

CBI conducted raid 12 places in four cities of Bihar in connection with the case.

Officials reveal that besides Verma’s residences search operations are also underway at seven premises of Brajesh Thakur, who ran the NGO, his associates, friends, and relatives.

Manju Verma resigned on August 8, following the revelations that her husband Chandrakant Verma has alleged links with key accused Thakur in the Muzaffarpur shelter home sex scandal case.

The alleged sex assault case in Muzaffarpur shelter home uncovered more than a month ago in a social audit conducted by Tata Institute of Social Sciences. Over 40 girls had been lodged at the shelter home and medical reports suggest that over half of them may have had sexual intercourse at some point of time.

An FIR was lodged by the state social welfare department in June, which led to the arrest of 11 people in the case. The NGO running the shelter home has been blacklisted.

PM Modi to visit flood affected Kerala

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Friday evening, will leave for Kerala to review the flood situation in the state.

“Had a telephone conversation with Kerala CM Shri Pinarayi Vijayan just now. We discussed the flood situation across the state and reviewed rescue operations. Later this evening, I will be heading to Kerala to take stock of the unfortunate situation due to flooding,” tweeted by PM Modi.

PM Modi had earlier on Thursday spoke to Kerala CM and discussed the flood situation in the state. He had also asked Defence Ministry to further step up the rescue and relief operations across the state.

Kerala is witnessing continuous rain since past few days, causing flood and landslides across the state.

More than 90 people have lost their lives so far. Rescue operations are in full fledge.

Thousands of people have been evacuated and are living in the relief camps.”

Jammu and Kashmir: Encounter underway between terrorists, security forces

According to media reports, an encounter is underway on August 17 between security forces and terrorists in Karalgund area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara District.

A search operation is currently underway and Troops of 92 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), 32 Rashtriya Rifles and Special Operations Group cordoned off the area.

In the meantime, another encounter broke out between the security forces and terrorists in Hajin area of Bandipora District.

There is no report of casualties and injuries so far.

More details are awaited on the encounters underway in Kupwara and Bandipora.

The Kashmir has witnessed a sudden spurt in incidents of encounter since the past few months.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s funeral: Delhi Police issue traffic advisory, make security arrangements

The Delhi Police on August 17 have made elaborate security arrangements in wake of last rites procession of former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who dies at 93 on August 16 at AIIMS Delhi.

“The procession will go to the BJP headquarters on DDU Marg from Krishna Menon Marg, at 9 am. It is expected to reach the cremation ground in the afternoon,” Special Commissioner of Police (law and order) R P Upadhaya said.

Police expect over 5 lakh people, including VVIPs, politicians, and dignitaries, at the BJP party office as well as the Rashtriya Smriti Sthal near Rajghat.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Madhur Verma said, “They have made elaborate security arrangements in the city today. It will be ensured that the people who come to pay their last respect face minimum inconvenience. Also, there will be no compromise with security”.

The Delhi Police issued traffic advisory, and almost closed 25 arterial roads from 8:00 am, leading to central Delhi, including Krishna Memon Marg, Akbar Road, Janpath and India Gate C-Hexagon, Shahjahan Road, Zakir Hussain Marg from SBM to India Gate (C-Hexagon), Tilak Marg From C-Hexagon to Tilak Bridge, Bhagwan Dass Road, Sikandara Road among others, to ensure smooth vehicular movement during Vajpayee’s final journey.

Over 2,000 Delhi Armed Police and paramilitary police, along with force from three districts — Central, North, and New Delhi — will be on the ground in order to ensure security and smooth movement during the procession.

Police are putting up CCTVs on the stretch and local police will be deployed at every intersection, apart from gunmen and snipers.

Former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee passes away at 93

Former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna awardee Atal Bihari Vajpayee passed away at 93 on Thursday at AIIMS Delhi where he was being treated since last nine weeks.

Alarm bells rang when Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee became critical and had been put on life support system after his health deteriorated on August 15. 

 According to the press release by All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Thursday evening, “It is with profound grief that we inform about the sad demise of Former Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee at 05:05 pm on 16.08.2018.

Shri Vajpayee was admitted in AIIMS on 11.06.2018 and was stable in the last 9 weeks under the care of a team of AIIMS doctors.

Unfortunately, his condition deteriorated over the last 36 hours and he was put on life support systems. Despite the best of efforts, we have lost him today.

We join the Nation in deeply mourning this great loss.”

Atal Bihari Vajpayee, being a diabetic had only one functional kidney. He suffered a stroke in 2009, weakening his cognitive abilities. Later, he developed dementia.

He was elected as Prime Minister thrice during 1996, 1996-1999 and during 1999-2004 — when he completed the full five-year term as a non-Congress Prime Minister. As his health deteriorated, he slowly withdrew himself from public life and was confined to his residence for years.

Mourning the loss of Vajpayee, PM Narendra Modi tweeted, “India grieves the demise of our beloved Atal Ji. His passing away marks the end of an era. He lived for the nation and served it assiduously for decades. My thoughts are with his family, BJP Karyakartas and millions of admirers in this hour of sadness. Om Shanti.”

President Ram Nath Kovind expressing his condolences, said, “Extremely sad to hear of the passing of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, our former Prime Minister and a true Indian statesman. His leadership, foresight, maturity and eloquence put him in a league of his own. Atalji, the Gentle Giant, will be missed by one and all.”
