Asian Games 2018: India win gold in men’s doubles tennis

Indian tennis players Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan won the gold medal in 18th Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta after beating Kazakhstan’s men’s doubles pair.

Top seeds Bopanna and Sharan beat Denis Yevseyev and Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 to win the gold medal in the match.

India’s medal tally has now risen to 22 including 6 gold, 4 silver and 12 bronze.

President Ram Nath Kovind took to his twitter account and congratulated the winners.

“Congratulations @rohanbopanna and @divijsharan for winning the Gold Medal in Men’s Doubles Tennis event at the @asiangames2018!! India is proud of you”, tweeted by the President.

Earlier Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi won the gold in men’s doubles in 2002 and 2006, while Sanam Singh and Somdev Devvarman won gold in 2010. 

Rajasthan: Mob attacks Kanwariyas in Tonk disctrict

At least 14 kanwariyas were injured in Rajasthan on Thursday, following a clash between Kanwariyas and members of minority community.

The incident happened, when Kanwariyas were passing through a minority community dominated area in Malpura, located in Tonk district of Rajasthan when some miscreants armed with sticks, sharp weapons and stones attacked the religious procession, resulting to a clash between locals and kanwariyas.

According to the officials, an SUV was also torched by the miscreants.

Injured Kanwariyas are currently being treated at a local hospital.

The situation in the Malpura region of Rajasthan is still tense, Internet services have been suspended by the administration, Section 144, which prohibits the gathering of crowds, has been imposed in the area.

Moreover, additional security has been deployed in the area.

Scott Morrison to become Australia’s next Prime Minister

Scott Morrison is Australia’s new Prime Minister after he defeated Peter Dutton 45 votes to 40 in the secret ballot. The decision ended a week-long chaos in the Capital

Scott Morrison won leadership of the Liberal Party and will be sworn in as Prime Minister later today.

A defeated Malcolm Turnbull stood down from leadership after he lost the majority support of his Liberal Party.

Malcolm Turnbull tweeted, “I have just been provided with a request for a meeting of the Parliamentary Liberal Party. It has 43 signatures. As soon as they are verified by the Whips, which should not take long, the meeting will be called.”

Opposition Peter Dutton hoped that he had the numbers to pull off the move, but Morrison succeeded in the voting to become next Prime Minister of Australia.

After leaving the party room meeting, Dutton offered his congratulations to Scott Morrison.

With Morrison becoming the new Prime Minister, Australia will get its sixth prime minister in 11 years.

Jammu and Kashmir: Terrorists kill forest officer in Baramulla district

A forest department official was shot dead by terrorists on Thursday in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

The deceased was identified as forty-five-year-old Tariq Ahmad Malik.

As per the sources, the terrorists barged inside Tariq Ahmad Malik’s house in Zandpal area of Tangmarg and fired upon him.

Later, Malik Succumbed to his injuries.

The Police have registered a case and initial probe reveals the involvement of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist Yousuf Dar alias Kantroo.

Four dead as car falls into gorge in Shimla district

Four people died, and three others injured, when their car fell into a deep gorge in Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla district on Thursday night.

As per the sources, the incident happened near Dhona village, when they were on their way to Dhanavali village from Nankhari in a Bolero Camper

Police reached the spot immediately after getting the information and begin the rescue operation.

On Thursday morning, in another incident, eleven people were killed when a private vehicle fell into a 200-feet deep gorge in the state’s Kullu district.

Apex Court seeks ECI’s response on duplicate voters in MP, Rajasthan

The Supreme Court on August 23 sought the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) response on pleas of Congress leaders Kamal Nath and Sachin pilot alleging the existence of a large number of duplicate voters in electoral rolls in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Pleas by Congress leaders also seek transparency in upcoming state assembly polls.

A SC bench comprising of Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice Ashok Bhushan issued the notice to ECI and the State Election Commission of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan and posted the matter for further hearing on August 31.

Senior counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi appearing for Congress leaders Nath and Pilot told the court that the EC was denying them the voters list in text mode citing privacy in MP, whereas in Rajasthan they had provided it in text mode.

Singhvi further said that Nath had conducted a survey on his own cost in MP and found that there were over 60 lakh duplicate voters in the voters’ list.

Aditi Singh becomes new GS of All India Mahila Congress

Congress president Rahul Gandhi has appointed Aditi Singh — an MLA from Uttar Pradesh’s Raebareli Sadar seat — as the General Secretary of All India Mahila Congress.
Announcing her appointment, AICC General Secretary Ashok Gehlot said that Aditi Singh can be a given a crucial role in the new team constituted by Congress chief Rahul Gandhi.
A Masters in Management Studies from Duke University, USA, Aditi came back to India to take the baton over from father Akhilesh Singh, the five-time MLA from Raebareli whose father Dunni Singh used to be one of the key organizers of Indira Gandhi’s poll campaigning.
Aditi Singh, who is in Israel currently on an official tour, spoke to Tehelka over WhatsApp call and expressed her gratitude towards Congress leadership. “I am thankful to the party leadership for giving me this new role. I am happy that my seniors, including Congress president Rahul Gandhi, former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi have faith in me. I am also thankful to All India Mahila Congress President Sushmita Dev for picking me for such an important post,” she said.
Aditi was trolled on social media over her photograph with Rahul Gandhi but she boldly snubbed rumor muggers exposing them on twitter.  
“A lot of work needs to be done for the women of the country. Being a woman myself, I can understand their problems. My aim will be to work for the education of women,” she said.
Aditi, who is considered to be close to Priyanka Gandhi, won the Raebareli seat with a margin of approximately 90,000 votes in the 2017 UP State Assembly Elections. Aditi also enjoys a huge following on social media. She fought elections after her father Akhilesh Singh fell ill.

Satya Pal Malik sworn-in as 13th governor of Jammu & Kashmir, replaces NN Vohra

Veteran politician Satya Pal Malik on August 23 took oath as the 13th Jammu and Kashmir governor. The 71-year old leader was administered the oath of office by Gita Mittal, Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court, at a function at Raj Bhawan in Srinagar.

Malik succeeded Narinder Nath Vohra, who held the post since June 25, 2008.

Former chief ministers Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti were among over 400 guests present at the ceremony, including senior officials of the civil administration, police, Central Reserve Police Force or CRPF, Border Security Force and the Army.

Malik was the governor of Bihar before taking charge of Jammu and Kashmir.

Malik had arrived in Srinagar on August 22 and was received at the Srinagar international airport by the three advisers to the state governor – Vijay Kumar, BB Vyas, and Khurshid Ahmad Ganai.

Jammu and Kashmir State is currently under the Governor’s rule following the split of BJP and PDP in June.

Rahul Gandhi addresses gathering in Berlin, slams Modi Government

Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who is on a four-day tour to Europe, addressed a gathering at  Bucerius Summer School in Hamburg, Germany on Wednesday.

Rahul in his address focused on employment issues in India, mob lynching, Women safety, Issues of Dalits and Poverty. He said India is facing a big problem but Prime Minister Narendra Modi refuses to admit it.

“The guaranteed employment scheme, right to food, right to information, bank nationalization was some of the ideas that all governments held through. Now, these ideas are damaged to a great extent”, Congress President said.

Citing an example of Islamic State terrorist group, Rahul said, that the exclusion of a large number of people from the development process could lead to the creation of insurgent groups like ISIS anywhere in the world.

Rahul said, all the money that used to go into schemes for the poor, the Dalits, minorities, and tribals, are now going to a few large corporates.

 “If you don’t give people a vision in the 21st century, somebody else will. And that’s the real risk of excluding a large number of people from the development process,” he said.

Rahul on Thursday will address a public meeting organized by the Indian Overseas Congress in Berlin. “I began my 2-day visit to Germany with a speech at the Bucerius Summer School in Hamburg, yesterday. Today, I am in Berlin to meet members of the German Bundestag, NGO’s & Business Leaders. I will also be addressing a public meeting organised by the Indian Overseas Congress,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted.

China willing to play ‘constructive role’ to improve India-Pak ties

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang on August 22 said that China willing to play a “constructive role” in improving India and Pakistan ties. He said this while attending a press briefing.

While calling India and Pakistan ‘important countries in South Asia’, Kang added, “We have noted relevant reports and we welcome the positive remarks made by the Indian and Pakistani leaders on improving bilateral relations.”

He further said that Beijing welcomed the “positive” comments recently made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his new Pakistani counterpart, Imran Khan, on improving bilateral ties.

“Both Pakistan and India are important countries in South Asia. As a common neighbor to Pakistan and India, China firmly supports the two sides to enhance dialogue increase mutual trust, properly handle and solve their differences,” spokesman added.

“The improvement and development of their bilateral ties are very important to regional peace, stability, and prosperity. As a neighbor to both Pakistan and India, China sincerely hopes that the two sides could enhance dialogue, increase mutual trust, properly handle and resolve differences, and make joint contributions to regional peace and development. China is willing to play a constructive role in this regard,” the spokesperson noted.

“I cannot make a prediction for you at this moment as to when and how China will do something. But it is obvious that playing a constructive role means advancing, consolidating and sustaining positive momentum.”
