Two British tourists among seven injured in Paris Knife attack

Seven people including two British tourists were injured on Sunday in Paris after they were attacked by a man armed with a knife and an iron bar, police said.

According to the police, the suspect, believed to be an Afghan national, has been arrested and no terrorist activity was suspected in these assaults, adding to it they said, the attacker had targeted “strangers in the street”.

Of the seven wounded, the condition of four people is critical, police said.

The incident took place on the banks of a canal in the northeast of the capital.

A security guard at one of the two cinemas by the canal said he saw a man who had already assaulted people being chased by two men who tried to stop him.

As per the reports, the man was armed with a knife and a metal bar, and first attacked three people outside the cinema.

Himachal Pradesh: Three dead, 44 inured as bus falls into gorge near Chintpurni

At least 3 people were killed and 44 injured after a Himachal Pradesh Roadways Transport (HRTC) bus fell into a gorge near Chintpurni on Sunday evening. 

The bus with 47 people onboard was travelling from Chintpurni to Hoshiarpur in Punjab, when it lost control and fell into the gorge. 

All the injured were immediately admitted to nearby hospitals for treatment. Out of 44, eight people were in serious condition, while the rest also had received major injuries. 

According to the police, the passengers were reported to be pilgrims who were returning home after offering prayers at Chintpurni temple.

Further investigation into the matter is going on.

Mob Kill driver after truck crushes 2-year old child to death in Jharkhand

A truck driver (Mohan Rai) on September 9 lynched by a mob in Jharkhand’s Dumka District after his vehicle ran over and killed a two-year-old boy identified as Subit Marandi at Simanijore village near National Highway-114A in the district around 3 pm, police said.

“The child was going with his sister when the truck hit him and he died. His sister shouted, the villagers gathered and beat the driver, resulting in his death,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Pujya Prakash, said.

Shikaripara police station in-charge Manoj Kumar added, the mob caught the driver and beat him to death, the driver was a resident of Motihari District in Bihar.

DSP Prakash added that the situation in the village is peaceful and police patrolling has been increased.

Bharat Bandh: Congress Party president kick-start protest from Rajghat, Delhi

Congress Party on September 10 kick-start its protest against fuel price hike and weakening of rupee from Rajghat, the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi. Party president Rahul Gandhi paid tributes to the father of the nation before the protest.

The Congress said that 21 opposition parties, including the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S), Samajwadi Party (SP), Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Maharshtra Navanirman Sena (MNS), are supporting the Bharat Bandh along with a number of chambers of commerce and traders’ associations.

The party demanded that petrol and diesel should be brought under GST, by which oil prices could drop by about Rs. 15 to Rs. 18.

Congress leader Meira Kumar reportedly said, “Bharat Bandh will surely have an impact on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his leadership. Also, this Bharat Bandh will also have an impact on people of this nation, because they will get to know that we as Opposition are with them in hard times. Opposition unity is showing our power and PM Modi’s weakness.”

Government offices, banks, schools and colleges in Bengaluru in Karnataka, are closed today. A host of organizations such as Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, KSRTC, BMTC, Ola and Uber Drivers and Owners Association, Auto Drivers’ Association are lending their support to the Bharat Bandh in Karnataka.

There is a partial response to Bandh in Coimbatore.

Protesters blocked movement of trains in Bihar at several places such as Jehanabad, Madhubani, Ara and Patna.

In Puducherry reports of violence are coming as protestors are pelting stones on a TNSTC bus near Nellithope signal. There are reports of stone pelting at other places also.

In Odisha as Congress and other opposition parties observed Bharat Bandh protesting against hike in fuel prices ruling BJD refused to support the call. Schools and colleges remained closed to ensure safety of children.

In Odisha Biju Patnaik University of Technology suspended examinations of all professional courses in view of the bandh.

In West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress refused to support the Bharat Bandh call.

In Chennai, the Bharath Bandh called by Congress did not receive major response.

Congress workers in Gujarat in view of the Bharat bandh blocked several highways.

Bharat Bandh: Nationwide protest against rise in fuel prices

Public transport and normal life is likely to be affected on Monday, as many services will be unavailable in the wake of a nationwide shutdown called by the Congress against rising diesel and petrol prices

Many states, especially in South India, where the BJP has little or no presence in terms of elected representatives, have come out in support of the Bharat Bandh.

According to reports, except for Nammo metro, all forms of transport service in Karnataka are going to take a massive hit during the bandh to be observed between 9am and 3pm. The state road transport buses will remain off the roads as the KSRTC Staff and Workers Association has extended its support for the bandh. Hence, services by all state-run transport corporations – BMTC, KSRTC, NWKRTC, NEKRTC are believed to a part of the nationwide strike.

Several schools and colleges in Bangalore have declared a holiday as a precautionary measure. But, essential services like milk supply, hospitals and medical services will not be affected.

The state government in Odisha, has directed all schools to remain closed on September 10 and has ordered to ensure maintenance of essential services in the districts during the Nationwide strike.

Regional parties, including the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu, Janata Dal (Secular), or JD(S) in Karnataka, and left parties in Kerala and elsewhere, have supported the bandh call.

The Nation wide shut down will be observed between 9am and 3pm. 

Rajasthan: Vasundhara Raje govt reduces VAT on petrol, diesel

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje on Sunday announced a 4% cent reduction in value-added tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel, which will reduce prices of petrol and diesel in the state by Rs 2.5 per litre.

Raje announced the reduction in VAT at a public meeting organised in Rawatsar in Hanumangarh district as part of her ‘Rajasthan Gaurav Yatra’.

After the reduction, the VAT in the state on diesel will be reduced from 22 to 18 per cent and on petrol from 30 to 26 per cent. This will cost the state exchequer Rs 2,000 crore.

Since August 16 there has been a surge in fuel prices. The prices have been revised upward almost every day and have reached a record high.

PM Modi slams opposition, sets the tone for 2019 Lok Sabha elections

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address on the concluding day of BJP’s two-day national executive meeting on Sunday attacked Congress president Rahul Gandhi and said that many leaders within the Congress are not ready to accept his leadership.

Without naming Rahul Gandhi, PM said “No one is ready to accept the leadership of Congress. Many think it is not capable of giving leadership.”

Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, while giving a brief about the points made by the Prime Minister, said, “The political resolution blends the essence of economic resolution. This time focus was on political resolution and the NRC.”

While slamming the Congress for spreading “lies and falsehood”, PM also questioned the idea of “mahagathbandhan” and said those who cannot see eye to eye, have no political or logical understanding of working with each other are thinking of ‘mahagathbandhan’.  

PM also said that the ‘mahagathbandhan’ is a clueless leadership formation.

Accusing the Congress of spreading lies, PM said “those who are asking us questions should also answer on work done during 48 years of the family (Nehru-Gandhi) and 48 months of our BJP government. When comparison is made, we will also ask questions regarding on who the family worked for, with what consideration and objectives.”

Meanwhile PM Modi gave two new slogans to the BJP cadres-‘Ajaye Bharat’ and ‘Atal Bharat’ saying that he saw no challenge to the party from anyone.

Tamil Nadu government recommends release of Rajiv Gandhi assassination case convicts

Tamil Nadu government on Sunday decided to send recommendation to the state Governor Banwarilal Purohit to release all seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar told reporters that under the leadership of Chief Minister K Palaniswami, a resolution to this effect was adopted by the state cabinet.

The recommendation to the Governor is to release the seven convicts, Murugan, Santhan, Perarivalan, Jayakumar, Ravichandran, Robert Payas and Nalini who are serving life imprisonment.

The Supreme Court had earlier asked the Tamil Nadu Governor to consider the mercy petition of Perarivalan seeking remission or pardon under Article 161 of the Constitution.

Though the Supreme court had asked the Governor to consider the plea of Perarivalan, the AIADMK government decided to recommend setting free all others also as they had also petitioned seeking premature release, he said.

The cabinet resolution will be sent to the Governor “immediately,” he said.

Former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on May 21, 1991 by an LTTE woman suicide bomber at an election rally.

Kerala: Nun found dead inside convent well

 

 

A nun was found dead at at Pathanapuram, Kerala on Sunday.

The body of nun was found inside the convent well, police said.

The deceased has been identified as 54-year-old Susan Mathew.

She teaches at the St. Stephens School in Pathanapuram, about 80km from the state capital.

At around 9am, employees at the Mount Tabor Convent first found blood stains near the convent well and then saw the body floating inside the well, the police said.

Susan had been teaching at the school for the past 12 years and was a native of Kallada in Kollam.

Both the Convent and the school, is run by the Kottayam-headquartered Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church.

The reason of the death remains unknown.

Jammu and Kashmir: Missing youth found murdered in Baramulla district

Jammu and Kashmir Police on Sunday said that a youth who went missing last month from his home in Tangmarg area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, was found murdered, while two suspects has been arrested.

Police began an investigation following a written complaint filed by Mehrajuddin Teli’s father on August 26 saying that his son had gone missing from Tangmarg area. Efforts were made to locate the missing person.

While interrogation, the two suspects – Irshad Ahmed Wani and Imtiyaz Ahmed Wani both residents of village Rishipora Khaipora Bala admitted that they murdered the missing person Mehrajuddin Teli on the day he went missing and later buried his body few kilometres away from the area.

Later, Teli’s body was exhumed by a team of medical and forensic experts in presence of a Magistrate.

Further investigation into the matter is going on.
