Taj Mahal, other monuments to not reopen as COVID-19 cases soar in Agra

In wake of the current coronavirus situation in Agra, the district administration of the city has decided to keep all the historical monuments including Taj Mahal closed until further orders.

As per the District Magistrate, 55 new cases of COVID-19 reported in the past four days and there are also 71 containment zones in Agra, citing the risk of new COVID-19 infections spreading in the city as tourists will come to see the monuments if they are opened.

Earlier, Union Minister of Tourism and Culture Prahlad Singh Patel announced that all Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) protected monuments will reopen from July 6.

On Sunday, the Health Ministry reported a record single-day spike of 24,850 new COVID-19 cases, taking the overall tally to 673,165 cases.
