If convicts of Rajiv Gandhi murder case can be released, why not Sikh prisoners: SGPC

SGPC President’s sharp reaction after Supreme Court decision

Amritsar :ShiromaniGurdwaraParbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Harjinder Singh Dhami while reacting to the Supreme Court’s Friday decision to release convicts in Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination case, raised question that why the same is not being applied in the cases of Sikh political prisoners?

In a statement issued he alleged that the discriminatory policy being adopted by governments for the Sikhs stands exposed with this decision. The SGPC President in a statement issued from his office said that the Sikh community has been raising voice for the release of Sikh political prisoners locked in different jails in the country for the last three decades, but the governments have turned a deaf ear.

He claimed that there are many such cases, in which the governments have been merciful to the prisoners with heinous charges like murder, rape, etc. On the other hand, injustice is being done to the Sikh prisoners. He said even release of Prof. Devinderpal Singh Bhullar is possible with a consent from the AamAadmi Party government in Delhi, but the Chief Minister of Delhi ArvindKejriwal is adopting anti-Sikh sentiments. Similarly, the case of BhaiGurdeep Singh Khera’s release is pending with the Karnataka government, he said.

Harjinder Singh Dhami said that despite the clear instructions by the Supreme Court in the case of death sentence commutation of BhaiBalwant Singh Rajoana, the governments are working under the policy of ignorance and opposition.

SGPC President said that if the Tamil Nadu state government can recommend the release of accused involved in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, then why not the same can be done by the governments of various states, including the Centre and Punjab for the release of Sikh political prisoners. He also said that the release of the Sikh prisoners is linked to completion of their sentences, while the convicts of the Rajiv Gandhi assassination have been released prematurely. This discrimination is deeply hurtful to Sikh sentiments, about which governments should be serious.

Dhami has expressed objection to Congress for including Sikh Genocide accused JagdishTytler in the state election committee for the elections of Municipal Corporation Delhi. He said that even after 38 years, the wounds of the Sikh Genocide are still oozing and the victim Sikh families are demanding punishment for the perpetuators. He said Congress is rewarding the perpetrators of Sikh Genocide by giving them positions. SGPC President strongly said that Congress should refrain from such actions.

He has also condemned the incident of honouring Congress leader Kamal Nath, another accused of Sikh Genocide cases, during a religious congregation related to PrakashGurpurb of first Guru at Indore, Madhya Pradesh (MP). He said that the organizers of the event did not do it right by honouring Kamal Nath. SGPC President also appreciated the protest by famous KirtaniyaBhaiManpreet Singh Kanpuri who went there to do Kirtan during the congregation at Indore. He also appealed to the Jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib to hold accountability of organizers of the congregation at Indore.

Delhi’s air quality slips back to ‘very poor’ category

Delhi’s air quality deteriorated to the ‘very poor’ category on Friday, after marginal improvement over the last few days, with a layer of smog shrouding several parts of the city.

The city recorded a minimum temperature of 14.6 degrees Celsius, a notch above normal, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The national capital’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 331 at 9 am, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data showed.

An AQI between zero and 50 is considered ‘good’, 51 and 100 ‘satisfactory’, 101 and 200 ‘moderate’, 201 and 300 ‘poor’, 301 and 400 ‘very poor’, and 401 and 500 ‘severe’.

The relative humidity was 79 per cent at 8:30 pm, the IMD said.

The weather department has forecast mainly clear skies during the day. The maximum temperature is expected to settle at 29 degrees Celsius.

The Delhi government had on Monday decided to reopen primary classes from November 9 and revoke the order asking 50 per cent of its staff to work from home in view of an “improvement” in the city’s air quality over the last few days.

The Commission for Air Quality Management had said on Thursday that it will review the air pollution situation in Delhi on Friday.

JNU Clash: Delhi Police register two separate FIRs

Police have registered two separate FIRs in connection with a scuffle that broke out between two groups of students on the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus, officials said on Friday.

Police had said that two students were injured in Thursday’s clash, while university sources claimed only one student suffered injuries.

The scuffle near the Narmada Hostel was a fallout of events that unfolded at a birthday party on Wednesday, the sources said earlier.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest) Manoj C said, “On the complaint of JNU student Nishant Nagar, a case under sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered.

He further added that on the complaint of another JNU student Kartik, a second FIR under similar sections has been registered in Vasant Kunj North police station and further investigation is underway.

A few purported video clips were circulated on social media that showed some students with sticks running on the campus.

In one of the videos, masked students were seen with sticks. One of the students was wearing a JNU sweatshirt. Police said they will verify the authenticity of the videos circulating on social media.

Both university sources and the police had said no political groups were involved in the fight.

In recent years, the university has witnessed several instances of violence involving Left-affiliated student outfits and the RSS-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

In April this year, two groups of students clashed at the Kaveri Hostel allegedly over the serving of non-vegetarian food in the mess on Ram Navami.

On January 5, 2020, a mob of masked men stormed the campus and targeted students in three hostels.

At least 28 people, including JNU Students’ Union president Aishe Ghosh, were injured as chaos reigned on the campus for nearly two hours.

Punjab to give Kerala paddy straw to feed its cattle

Punjab Animal Husbandry Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar Thursday assured his counterpart in Kerala that Punjab will provide paddy straw to the state to be used as fodder for livestock.

He said the move will help Punjab deal with the excess paddy straw.

Kerala Animal Husbandry Minister J Chinchurani, who was leading a 21-member delegation here, said dairying is a prominent livelihood activity in Kerala and is the primary source of income for lakhs of dairy farmers, according to a state government release.

Kerala ranks second in milk production after Punjab, she said, adding that over the last few years, high cost of feeding animals has adversely affected the economic viability of the dairy sector.

Kerala being a land stressed and coastal state does not generate enough roughage which can be used as fodder for cattle, she said.

Chinchurani said: “If the unused and unwanted paddy straw is transported to Kerala using the Kisan rail project as announced by the Union government, it will benefit a large number of dairy farmers in our state.”

Describing the initiative as a win-win situation for both the states, Bhullar said that the Bhagwant Mann government is ready for all possible cooperation in the matter and will iron out the rest of the details of the pact in due course.

Gopal Rai launches AAP war room for MCD elections

AAP’s Delhi unit convenor Gopal Rai on Thursday inaugurated the party’s war room for the upcoming MCD elections from where it will conduct, among others, the nomination process and social media campaigns for the polls.

The 250-ward Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) goes to polls on December 4 and the counting of votes will take place on December 7.

“The war room will have a set of 10 tasks, including booth management, candidate monitoring, social media campaign and star campaigners,” Rai said.

When asked about nominations, he said the candidate selection process was underway.

The BJP has been in power in the MCD — trifurcated in 2012 into north, south and east corporations and then unified this year — for three straight terms. The high-stake civic polls are largely being seen as a three-way contest between the BJP, the AAP and the Congress.

Delhi Excise Policy: Enforcement Directorate arrests two persons

ED has arrested two company executives linked to liquor trade in the money laundering investigation being conducted by it into the now scrapped Delhi Excise policy case, official sources said Thursday.

Benoy Babu of Pernod Ricard and Sharath Reddy of Aurobindo Pharma have been arrested under sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), they said.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has conducted multiple raids in this case so far. In September, it arrested Sameer Mahandru, managing director of a liquor manufacturing company Indospirit.

The agency early this month raided the premises of a PA of Delhi Deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia and later questioned him at its office in Delhi.

The money laundering case stems from a CBI FIR that had named Sisodia as an accused among others. The CBI had raided the premises of the deputy chief minister and some Delhi government bureaucrats after filing the case.

The excise scheme came under the scanner after the Delhi LG recommended a CBI probe into the alleged irregularities in the implementation of Delhi’s Excise Policy 2021-22. The LG had also suspended 11 excise officials.
