Shelly Oberoi becomes Delhi’s Mayor

New Delhi: AAP’s Shelly Oberoi became the mayor of Delhi after defeating the BJP’s mayoral candidate Rekha Gupta by a margin of 34 votes, MCD officials announced on Wednesday.

Voting began as the municipal house met after three previous failed attempts to hold the election to the top post.

BJP MPs Meenakshi Lekhi and Hans Raj Hans were among the firsts to cast their votes.

The exercise took place after much delay since the high-stakes MCD elections last month.

The mayoral election is being conducted following a Supreme Court order after three failed attempts earlier to hold the polls.

Oberoi polled 150 votes while Gupta received 116 votes out of the total 266 votes polled. The voting was held at the Civic Centre.

Delhi got the mayor in the fourth attempt since the earlier elections were stalled amid ruckus over voting rights being given to nominated members.

Last week, Delhi Lt Governor V K Saxena gave his nod to convene the municipal House for holding the mayoral election following the apex court order.

The top court on February 17 ordered the issuance of a notice within 24 hours for convening the first meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to fix the date of elections for the mayor, the deputy mayor and the members of the standing committee of the civic body.

The court issued the order after hearing a plea moved by Oberoi, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) mayoral candidate.

In a shot in the arm for the AAP, the apex court also held that the members nominated to the MCD by the Lt Governor cannot vote to elect the mayor. Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia congratulated Oberoi and the party workers on the win. “The goons lost, the public won. Many congratulations to all the workers as the AAP candidate has become the mayor in Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Once again wholehearted gratitude to the people of Delhi.

Refuse to pay property tax, Mehbooba Mufti tells people in J&K

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday urged people of Jammu and Kashmir to refuse to property tax peacefully. She said that the imposition of the tax was part of the BJP’s agenda of impoverishing the people of the Union Territory.

“The real aim is to make people of Jammu and Kashmir so poor that they don’t demand anything. Look at the rest of the country, 80 crore people are getting free ration. They don’t ask for jobs or cheaper fuel,” Mehbooba said in Srinagar today. “They just wait for the 5 kg grain so that they can feed their children. They want to bring Jammu and Kashmir also to the same level.”

She said that the BJP wants “to bury people of J&K.”

“They could not bring other States at par with J&K, now they are trying to bring us at par with other States,” Mehbooba said. The former Chief Minister said the BJP has been a “disaster” for Jammu and Kashmir. The Jammu and Kashmir administration on February 21 issued a notification for imposition of property tax which will come into effect from the next financial year.

Home Ministry gives nod to prosecute Delhi Dy CM Sisodia in snooping case

New Delhi: Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has given sanction to prosecute Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia under the Prevention of Corruption Act in connection with the alleged ‘Feedback Unit (FBU) snooping case’.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will now lodge a fresh case against Sisodia.

The CBI in its preliminary inquiry report has found that the FBU formed through a Delhi cabinet decision on September 29, 2015 indulged in gathering political intelligence.

Delhi Lt. Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena had also given his approval to the CBI to file a case against Sisodia and six others over allegations that the AAP government created a Feedback Unit under the vigilance department to collect political intelligence.

“From the careful perusal of the note, it can be unambiguously observed that there was a concerted effort by the state government to create an agency that was outside it’s mandate and not within the constitutional scheme of Governance. “There seems to have been a well conceived attempt to establish an extraneous and parallel covert agency with overarching powers of snooping and trespass, without any legislative, judicial or executive oversight whatsoever, ” L-G Saxena has observed in his order

CBI conducts raids in FCI corruption case

In a latest development in connection with the crackdown on officials of state-run Food Corporation of India (FCI), the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday conducted raids at more than 30 places.

Some of the places where the raids are underway are Rajpura, Patiala, Sarhind, Fatehgarh Sahib, Mohali, Sonam, Moga, Firozapur, Ludhiana and Sangrur.

CBI sources have said that premises belonging to FCI officials, private rice millers and grain merchants are being raided.

On January 13, the probe agency had arrested Satish Verma, the Chandigarh-based lab owner.

Three days prior, the CBI had arrested FCI DGM Rajeev Kumar Mishra when he was about to receive a bribe of Rs 50, 000 from Ravinder Singh Khera, the owner of a private firm in Punjab.

Last month, a case was registered against 74 accused, including 34 serving and three retired officials of FCI, 17 private persons and other entities.

“Huge amount of bribe was paid to FCI officials for extending favours to the private nexus operators. Private rice millers and grain merchants were paying bribes to FCI officials for getting favours in accommodating procurement of low quality foodgrains, malpractices in day-to-day operations in unloading of foodgrains, managing enquiries against various malpractices, etc, ” a CBI official had said.

The officials in conspiracy with rice millers cover up the shortages in stocks and accepted low quality foodgrains which are transported to other parts of the country.

The rice millers in turn allegedly paid a huge amount of bribe to the officials of FCI as part of channelised corruption.
