Selected Assistant Professors in Punjab continue to protest

Members of the ‘1158 Assistant Professors and Librarians Front, Punjab’ staged a protest march in SAS Nagar (Mohali) today, demanding the completion of the recruitment process for 1158 posts of assistant professors and librarians in government colleges. Carrying placards demanding that the government complete the entire recruitment process, the selected Assistant Professors staged a protest asserting that their primary demand was the appointment of the remaining candidates to government colleges to ensure that all the 1158 posts were filled.

Gurlal Mann, himself a selected candidate for Assistant Professor-Punjabi and who is spearheading the stir said that the protest will continue until all the selected candidates are appointed and the recruitment process is completed. He alleged that despite a favourable ruling from Punjab and Haryana High Court allowing the 1,158 recruitments to proceed, the government had delayed the appointments for a long. The protesters argued that the issue is about recruitment and the survival of government colleges, which have not had regular professor appointments for 25 years.

It may be recalled that in a major relief, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had allowed the recruitment of 1,158 assistant professors and librarians in Punjab while overturning a single bench ruling that had earlier rejected this recruitment of 2021. The Punjab government had challenged this decision in a double bench. During the hearing, the counsel appearing on behalf of the Punjab government had demanded allotment of stations to professors selected during the recruitment of 1,158 assistant professors/librarians.

PM Modi extends Maha Shivratri wishes, calls for ‘Viksit Bharat’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday extended warm greetings to the nation on the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivratri, expressing his wishes for happiness, prosperity, and a stronger resolve toward building a ‘Viksit Bharat.’

Sharing a video on X, PM Modi wrote, “I wish all my countrymen a very happy Mahashivratri, a festival dedicated to Lord Shiva. May this divine occasion bring happiness, prosperity, and good health to all of you and also strengthen the resolve for a Viksit Bharat. Har Har Mahadev!”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also conveyed his Maha Shivratri greetings, emphasising the festival’s deep spiritual and introspective significance.

“Heartiest greetings to all countrymen on the holy festival of Mahashivratri. This festival of the union of Shiva and Shakti is a great festival of spirituality, introspection, and faith. I pray to Devadhidev Mahadev for the welfare of all, ” he posted on X.

BJP National President and Union Minister J.P. Nadda also extended his best wishes, writing on X, “Hearty congratulations and best wishes to all the countrymen on the holy festival of Maha Shivratri. I pray to the God of Gods, Mahadev, that this great festival brings happiness, prosperity, and health in everyone’s life. May the blessings of Baba Bholenath remain on everyone.”

People across the country are celebrating Maha Shivratri with great devotion and enthusiasm, visiting temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and offering prayers.

Maha Shivratri is widely believed to mark the divine marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. However, scholars argue that there is no mention of this event in ancient scriptures, including the Shiva Purana.

The Shiva Purana states that the Shivling first manifested on the fourteenth day of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Falgun, known as Chaturdashi Tithi. On this day, Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma worshipped the Shivling, establishing it as a sacred occasion called Shivratri.

Kashmir sees fresh snow, rain, more wet weather ahead

Srinagar – Higher reaches of Kashmir received fresh snowfall on Tuesday, while the plains, including Srinagar, were lashed by rain, bringing much-needed relief to residents after a dry winter, officials said.

Popular tourist destination Gulmarg and surrounding areas saw fresh snow, along with other high-altitude regions in the valley. The rainfall led to a significant drop in daytime temperatures across the plains.

The Meteorological Department (MeT) has issued weather alerts for the coming days. A yellow alert is in place for February 26 across Jammu and Kashmir, while an orange alert has been issued for February 27. On February 28, Jammu remains under an orange alert, with a yellow alert for Kashmir. The advisory warns of isolated heavy snowfall and rainfall, which may impact surface transportation.

Director MeT Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad said the wet weather is expected to continue until February 28, with light to moderate rain and snow across most areas. The heaviest snowfall is likely between February 27 and 28. Light rain and snow may continue on March 1 and 2 due to an active Western Disturbance.

Authorities have warned of possible disruptions in air and surface transport, including key routes like the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, Mughal Road, and passes such as Sadhna, Razdhan, and Zojila. Tourists, transporters, and travelers have been advised to plan accordingly.

Farmers have been urged to suspend irrigation and fieldwork, while departments responsible for snow clearance and emergency services have been directed to stay on alert. The public can contact the District Emergency Operation Centre in Srinagar for assistance.

Kashmir has faced an 80% precipitation deficit this winter, but the ongoing wet spell has raised hopes of reducing the shortfall.

Congress Leader Sajjan Kumar Sentenced to Life Imprisonment in 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots Case

New Delhi: A trial court on Tuesday sentenced former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar to life imprisonment in a case of murder during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

This case is related to the killing of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh in the Saraswati Vihar area on November 1, 1984, during the riots.

The sentencing came amid heated protests by the members of the Sikh community earlier in the day, demanding a death penalty for the former Congress MP.

Describing the 1984 riots, which broke out after the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984, as one of the “darkest and most shameful” chapters in India’s history, the protesters demanded justice and urged the court to sentence Sajjan Kumar to death.

The Rouse Avenue Court, which had reserved its verdict on January 31, after hearing additional submissions advanced by Public Prosecutor Manish Rawat, had, on February 12, convicted Sajjan Kumar in connection with the killing.

His advocate Anil Sharma had submitted that Sajjan Kumar’s name was not there from the very beginning, and there was a delay of 16 years in naming him as an accused by the witness. It was also submitted that a case in which Sajjan Kumar was convicted by the Delhi High Court is pending an appeal before the Supreme Court.

Special Judge Kaveri Baweja had posted the arguments on the quantum of the sentence for February 18.

The BJP has been constantly demanding the expulsion of Sajjan Kumar from the Congress, calling the party “anti-Sikh” for not taking appropriate action.

BJP leader and Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa had also written to the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, seeking the expulsion of Sajjan Kumar.

Sirsa had asked Gandhi to prove his commitment to justice and communal harmony by issuing “a public apology to the Sikh community and the entire nation for the Congress’ role in sheltering and empowering criminals like Sajjan Kumar.”

Delhi Govt suffered loss of Rs 2000 crore in 2021-2022 Excise Policy: CAG Report

The Delhi government suffered over Rs 2000 crore loss of revenue from now scrapped 2021-2022 Excise Policy due to several discrepancies and weak regulatory functioning, the report stated on Tuesday.

The report which has been tabled in the Delhi assembly by chief minister Rekha Gupta stated that important measures like setting up of liquor testing laboratories, batch testing for rigorous quality assurance, and monitoring and regulation through creation of a dedicated post were not ensured by the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.

“Audit observed several discrepancies in the way the Excise Department monitored and regulated the supply of Liquor in NCT of Delhi. The working of the Excise Department raises several questions about the way the department is fulfilling its responsibility. Total financial implication of the audit findings is approx. 2026.91 crore,” the report stated.

The report, one of the 14 reviews of the previous government’s performance, also pointed out the violation in the licensing process. It stated that the department could not ensure the implementation of Rule 35 of Delhi Excise Rules, 2010, which prohibits issue of multiple licences of different categories to related parties, leading to the existence of common directorship among entities holding various Licence types.

“The Excise Department suffered a loss of approximately Rs 890.15 crore on account of License fee from these zones owing to their surrender and failure of the Department in re-tendering,” the report has said.

The report also said that the government incurred loss of revenue of Rs 144 crore owing to irregular grant of waiver on account of COVID to zonal licences.

Further, the incorrect collection of Security  Deposit from zonal Licences, led to loss of revenue of around Rs 27 crore.

The BJP has repeatedly accused the previous AAP administration of deliberately withholding these audit reports. Last week, Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta had announced that all pending CAG audits—including those on state finances, public health infrastructure, vehicular pollution, liquor regulation, and the functioning of the Delhi Transport Corporation—would be made public in the first session under her government.

Three women detained in Srinagar for distributing Quran, released after questioning

Srinagar: Three women were briefly detained by the police in Rajbagh, Srinagar, on Sunday while distributing copies of the Holy Quran ahead of Ramzan. The detention sparked concern, with PDP leader and MLA Waheed Para condemning the action as unjust. However, Para later confirmed that the women were safe and released after being questioned, which he clarified was due to identity concerns during their religious activity.

Para had initially urged authorities to ensure that the women were not unnecessarily brought to courts or police stations. He emphasized that the Quran promotes justice and a crime-free society.

Activist Raja Muzaffar also condemned the detention, calling it a violation of international law and religious freedom protections under the United Nations Charter. Muzaffar warned that such actions could escalate tensions and undermine peace efforts in the region.

The women’s release followed a brief interrogation, and they were allowed to resume their religious outreach.

Assembly sessions were used by AAP to spread anarchy: Delhi BJP Chief

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said that the Assembly session starting today is a day of restoring the true democratic process. He said that for the past 10 years, Assembly sessions were only used to spread arbitrary anarchy by Aam Aadmi Party government.

Addressing the media, Sachdeva said, “The session that has started today, it is in real terms restoration of democracy in Delhi. In the last 10 years, in the guise of Vidhan Sabha, corruption, arbitrariness, and dictatorship were being spread. A good discussion is required. I hope that in the leadership of CM Rekha Gupta, there will be discussion, and development. I urge the Opposition to work with us…”

He said that the first step of democracy is giving proper respect to the opposition in the House, and it is regrettable that for a decade, the voice of the Opposition was suppressed in the Assembly.

The government of Delhi’s BJP Chief Minister Rekha Gupta will remain committed to upholding the dignity of the Assembly and respecting democratic systems.

Fight Against Obesity: PM Modi Invites 10 Prominent Personalities to Spread Awareness

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday invited ten prominent personalities to join the national movement against obesity and promote awareness about healthy food consumption, aligning with his Fit India initiative.

Among those nominated were Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, businessman Anand Mahindra, actor-turned-politician Dinesh Lal Yadav aka Nirahua, Olympic medalists Manu Bhaker and Mirabai Chanu, actors Mohanlal and R. Madhavan, singer Shreya Ghoshal, Rajya Sabha MP and philanthropist Sudha Murthy, and Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani.

PM Modi urged these personalities to further nominate ten individuals each, amplifying the movement’s reach and impact.

Taking to X, the Prime Minister stated, “As mentioned in yesterday’s Mann Ki Baat, I would like to nominate the following people to help strengthen the fight against obesity and spread awareness on reducing edible oil consumption in food. I also request them to nominate ten people each so that our movement gets bigger! Collectively, let us make India fitter and healthier.”

In his monthly radio program, ‘Mann Ki Baat’ on Sunday, PM Modi lauded India’s rapid progress toward becoming a global sporting powerhouse and stressed the importance of leading a healthy life.

During the address, he also highlighted a growing health concern — obesity. Referring to discussions at the National Games’ opening ceremony in Dehradun, he emphasised the urgent need to address India’s rising obesity crisis.

Citing World Health Organization data, he warned that one in every eight people in India is affected by obesity, with cases having doubled in recent years. More alarmingly, childhood obesity has increased fourfold.

He pointed out that excessive weight is linked to numerous health complications, including heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension. However, he reassured that small yet meaningful lifestyle changes could help tackle the issue.

To further this initiative, he invited Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra, boxer Nikhat Zareen, and renowned cardiologist Dr Devi Shetty to share their insights on combating obesity in the radio programme.

The Prime Minister urged citizens to embrace healthier eating habits, particularly by reducing excessive oil consumption. He emphasised that making informed dietary choices is not merely a personal decision but a collective responsibility toward family and society.

“Using less oil in food and dealing with obesity is not just a personal choice but also our responsibility towards the family. Excessive use of oil in food can cause many diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension,” he said.

“By making small changes in our food habits, we can make our future stronger, fitter, and disease-free. Therefore, without delay, we must increase our efforts in this direction and implement them in our lives. We can all do this together in a very playful and effective way,” he concluded.
