Security forces make arrests in South Kashmir ahead of polls

With the last leg of the three-phased election in South Kashmir’s Anantnag parliamentary constituency being held on May 6, the security forces  launched an arrest spree in Pulwama and Shopian districts.

According to reports, around 30 youth have been arrested on Wednesday night, taking the number of arrests made over the last three days to around 150.

The arrests are being made during night raids.

This, a government official said, is being done to facilitate the smooth conduct of the elections in the troubled constituency. Already two phases have been held in constituency with a cumulative percentage of around 10 percent.

Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq  “strongly condemned” the arrest spree in south Kashmir’s districts  ahead of parliamentary elections.

“Strongly condemn the daily arrest spree of youth from Pulwama and Shopian. Continued repression in #SouthKashmir is heart rending. Unless all those who claim to speak for fundamental #HumanRights of all don’t speak up, people of Kashmir will continue to be at the receiving end,” he said ” said the Mirwaiz on Twitter.
