Veteran politician Satya Pal Malik on August 23 took oath as the 13th Jammu and Kashmir governor. The 71-year old leader was administered the oath of office by Gita Mittal, Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court, at a function at Raj Bhawan in Srinagar.
Malik succeeded Narinder Nath Vohra, who held the post since June 25, 2008.
Former chief ministers Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti were among over 400 guests present at the ceremony, including senior officials of the civil administration, police, Central Reserve Police Force or CRPF, Border Security Force and the Army.
Malik was the governor of Bihar before taking charge of Jammu and Kashmir.
Malik had arrived in Srinagar on August 22 and was received at the Srinagar international airport by the three advisers to the state governor – Vijay Kumar, BB Vyas, and Khurshid Ahmad Ganai.
Jammu and Kashmir State is currently under the Governor’s rule following the split of BJP and PDP in June.
