J&K Delimitation Commission likely to submit report by April end

The Jammu and Kashmir Delimitation Commission which has enhanced J&K Assembly seats from 83 to 90 is likely to submit its report to the government by the end of April, according to sources.

Home Minister Amit Shah has already said that once the Commission submits its report, the Centre may take a call on holding the Assembly elections in the union territory.

Headed by Retired Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai and comprising Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sushil Chandra and State Election Commissioner (SEC) KK Sharma, the Commission was established on March 6, 2020 with a one-year term which was extended by another year. While the term was due to expire on March 6, 2022, it was granted two months extension. The Commission is unlikely to  get another extension.

The commission has proposed six new assembly constituencies in the Jammu region taking the number of Assembly seats in the region from 37 to 43. In Kashmir, the commission has proposed just one more seat taking the number from 46 to 47.

Enforcement  Directorate issues summons to Xiaomi global VP under FEMA

New Delhi : Enforcement  Directorate (ED) has summoned the global vice president of Chinese mobile manufacturing company Xiaomi, Manu Kumar Jain, for questioning in a probe linked to alleged contravention of the foreign exchange law, officials said on Wednesday.
The federal probe agency, according to sources, is investigating the company and its executives under the provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).
Allegations related to violation of forex laws in the Indian arm of the Chinese company over the last few years are being investigated, they said.
Jain, the former India head of Xiaomi, has been asked to furnish some financial documents linked to the company by appearing in person on Wednesday or sending it through an authorised representative.

A Xiaomi spokesperson said they were “a law abiding and responsible company.”
“We give paramount importance to the laws of the land. We are fully compliant with all the regulations and are confident of the same. We are cooperating with authorities with their ongoing investigation to ensure they have all the requisite information,” the spokesperson said.

Proceedings under the FEMA are civil in nature and the final penalty, post adjudication, can be at least three times the amount contravened under the law. Xiaomi and few other Chinese mobile manufacturing companies were raided by the Income Tax Department

No heatwave predicted in city for next 5-6 days

New Delhi:  National Capital’s maximum temperature is predicted to remain below the 40-degree mark on Wednesday. Safdarjung Observatory, considered the official marker for the city, recorded a minimum temperature of 21.7 degrees Celsius. A weak Western Disturbance over the Himalayas and an induced cyclonic circulation over Punjab has provided some respite from the searing heat in the plains. The maximum temperature will rise again after the weather system withdraws.

Delhi’s maximum temperature is predicted to remain below the 40-degree mark till Friday. It will gradually increase to 42 degrees Celsius by Monday. As per data with IMD ,No heatwave is predicted in the national capital for the next 5 to 6 days.

Safdarjung Observatory had recorded a maximum temperature of 42.6 degrees Celsius on Monday, the highest in April in five years. For the plains, a heatwave is declared when the maximum temperature is over 40 degrees Celsius and at least 4.5 notches above normal.

A severe heatwave is declared if the departure from normal temperature is more than 6.4 notches, according to the IMD. Parts of the national capital had been reeling under a heatwave since last week with maximum temperatures hovering above 40 degrees Celsius.

Weather department had earlier said northwest India and adjoining parts of central India are likely to see more intense and frequent heatwave conditions in April.

National capital has recorded five heatwave days so far in April this year. It had recorded six such days in April 2017, the IMD data showed.

Delhi had recorded a maximum temperature of 43.2 degrees Celsius on April 21, 2017. The all-time high maximum temperature for the month was 45.6 degrees Celsius on April 29, 1941.

India logs 1088 new COVID-19 cases with 26 deaths during last 24 hours

New Delhi:  India saw a single day rise of 1,088 new coronavirus infections taking the total tally of COVID-19 cases to 4,30,38,016, while the active cases dipped to 10,870, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Wednesday morning at 8 am. As per the data with Union health ministry the death toll climbed to 5,21,736 with 26 fresh fatalities. The active cases comprise 0.03 % of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate remained at 98.76 %. According to the union health ministry the daily positivity rate was recorded as 0.25 % and the weekly positivity rate as 0.24 %. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 4,25,05,410, while the case fatality rate was recorded as 1.21 %. The cumulative doses administered in the country so far under the nationwide COVID-19 vaccination drive has exceeded 186.07 Cr. India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 2020, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19. The country crossed the grim milestone of two crore on May 4 and three crore on June 23. The 26 new fatalities include 19 from Kerala. A total of 5,21,736 deaths have been reported so far in the country including 1,47,820 from Maharashtra, 68,402 from Kerala, 40,057 from Karnataka, 38,025 from Tamil Nadu, 26,158 from Delhi, 23,499 from Uttar Pradesh and 21,200 from West Bengal. Union Health Ministry stressed that more than 70 % of the deaths occurred due to comorbidities. “Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical Research,” the ministry said on its website, adding that state-wise distribution of figures is subject to further verification and reconciliation.

Around 50 shanties gutted in a fire at transit camp of Delhi

New Delhi: Around 50 shanties were gutted in a fire that broke out at transit camp in Delhi’s Anand Parbat area on Tuesday afternoon, police said.
No casualties have been reported so far, they said.

“A call about a fire was received at 2.12 pm in transit camp at Anand Parbat,” said Atul Garg, Director, Delhi Fire Service.
A total of 18 fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the blaze was brought under control, he said, adding that around 50 shanties were gutted in the fire. The cause of fire is not known yet.

J&K Police recovers arms from abandoned car

Jammu and Kashmir Police recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition from a car on Wednesday after the driver abandoned the vehicle when he ran into a Checkpost party in South Kashmir’ Anantnag district.

“A team of Anantnag police was on night domination near Mehmodabad Dooru. A vehicle coming from the opposite direction stopped on seeing the police party,” a police spokesman told a local news agency GNS. .”This raised suspicion and the police team fired some rounds in the air. However, the driver of the vehicle fled away from the spot, taking advantage of the darkness.”

When police opened the car,  they found a red bag.

“From the bag one AK-56, short barrel, two AK magazines, 2 pistols, three pistol magazines, six hand grenade, 44 rounds of AK-47, 58 rounds of 9mm ammo and a sling was recovered,” the spokesman said.

Police has registered the case and also launched a manhunt for the driver who escaped.

BJP sweeps Uttar Pradesh Council polls, SP draws a blank

Lucknow: BJP scored a massive victory in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council polls on Tuesday by winning 33 of the 36 seats where voting were held through local bodies.

Samajwadi Party suffered a humiliating defeat and could not win even a single seat.

Three seats were won by independent candidates. The Jansatta Dal, floated by Raghuraj Pratap Singh @ Raja Bhaiyya, retained the Pratapgarh seat where Akshay Pratap Singh Gopalji was the candidate.

Vikrant Singh Rishu, son of expelled BJP MLC Yashwant Singh, won the Azamgarh seat.

In Varanasi, Annapurna Singh, an independent, won the seat. Annapurna Singh is the wife of jailed mafia don Brijesh Singh.

The BJP has already won nine seats unanimously in the elections. This is for the first time that the ruling party has attained a thumping majority in the Legislative Council.

The chief minister said that the results proved that the people had immense faith in BJP and in the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“With a thumping majority in the Legislative Council as well as the state Assembly, the government will be able to do even better work in the interest of public welfare, women’s safety and self-reliance, employment of youth, and farmers, ” he added.

The chief minister said: “We were able to form our government with two-thirds majority under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the 2017 and 2022 Assembly elections. This will be probably the first time that the ruling party will have a majority in the State Legislative Council.”

India records 796 new coronavirus cases,19 deaths in last 24 hours

New Delhi : India recorded 796 new coronavirus infections taking the total tally of COVID-19 cases to 4,30,36,928, while the active cases dipped to 10,889, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Tuesday morning at 8 am.

Death toll climbed to 5,21710 with 19 fresh fatalities. The active cases comprise 0.03 % of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate remained at 98.76 % the health ministry said.

Reduction of 169 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours. The daily positivity rate was recorded as 0.20 % and the weekly positivity rate was 0.24 %, according to Union Health Ministry.

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 4,25,04,329, while the case fatality rate was recorded as 1.21 %.

The cumulative doses administered in the country so far under the nationwide COVID-19 vaccination drive has exceeded 185.90 Cr.

During last 24 hours 19 new fatalities include 18 from Kerala and one from Mizoram. India’s total of 5,21,710 deaths have been reported so far in the country including 1,47,816 from Maharashtra, 68,383 from Kerala, 40,057 from Karnataka, 38,025 from Tamil Nadu, 26,157 from Delhi, 23,499 from Uttar Pradesh and 21,200 from West Bengal.

Union Health ministry stressed that more than 70 % of the deaths occurred due to comorbidities. “Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical Research,” the ministry said on its website, adding that state-wise distribution of figures is subject to further verification and reconciliation.
