Palaniswami to meet Amit Shah

AIADMK interim general secretary and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) will be meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Tuesday.

This is the first time that Palaniswami is meeting a senior BJP leader after the controversial general body of the AIADMK on July 11 in which the former chief coordinator of the party, O. Panneerselvam was expelled from the party.

During his previous visit to the national capital for the farewell function of former President Ramnath Kovind, Palaniswami did not meet any senior BJP leader.

It is to be noted that the AIADMK is part of the NDA in Tamil Nadu and the BJP is trying to forge an alliance between the Panneerselvam faction and Palaniswami faction of the party. The BJP is also keen that former aide of late Chief Minister, J. Jayalalithaa, V.K. Sasikala, and her nephew and Chairman of Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) were brought back into the party fold.

The former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and deposed leader of the AIADMK, Panneerselvam (OPS) is in Varanasi for the religious rituals of his wife who passed away last year.

Punjab CM Mann calls special session of state assembly on Sept 22 to bring confidence motion

Days after the AAP accused the BJP of trying to topple its government in Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday said a special session of the state assembly will be called on September 22 to bring a confidence motion. The ruling party had recently claimed that at least 10 of its MLAs were approached by the BJP with an offer of Rs 25 crore to each of them in a bid to topple the six-month old government. With 92 MLAs, the AAP has an overwhelming majority in the 117-member Punjab Assembly, while Congress has 18, SAD three, BJP two, and BSP one. The assembly also has an an Independent member.  “You must have heard how they tried to contact our MLAs and tried to offer money and other allurements in an attempt to topple the state government which was elected with a huge mandate,” Chief Minister Mann said in a video message in Punjabi on Monday. A few days ago, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema had alleged that under the BJP’s ‘Operation Lotus’, some AAP legislators in the state had been approached by the people from the BJP. The senior AAP leader claimed that seven to 10 AAP MLAs have been approached with offers of money and ministerial positions. Mann said that people expressed faith in the AAP during the 2022 assembly polls after rejecting the opposition parties, which had a huge sum of money to induce people. Friends’ trust is such a thing that is priceless, he said, adding “we will maintain that trust”. AAP’s MLAs stand like a rock with the state and Punjabis, said Mann. “To show this confidence in a legal manner, we are calling a special session of the Vidhan Sabha on September 22. During the session, we will show how committed the elected MLAs are to realize the dream of turning Punjab into a vibrant state,” said Mann.

The Punjab Police on September 14 registered a case after the ruling AAP complained to the state DGP, alleging that the BJP tried to poach its MLAs. Cheema had met the state DGP along with party MLAs over the issue and demanded a thorough probe. A delegation of the Punjab BJP had last week demanded from Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit a probe into AAP’s “baseless” accusation that BJP tried to poach its MLAs. The delegation led by the state unit chief Ashwani Sharma had demanded a probe by a sitting judge of the high court during their meeting with the governor here. Delhi Chief Minister and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal had last week also accused the BJP of attempting to buy 10 party MLAs in Punjab by offering them Rs 25 crore each. Arvind Kejriwal had alleged that the BJP was running “Operation Lotus” to buy MLAs in every state, either through money or the fear of agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement Directorate.     “…They tried to buy our MLAs in Delhi and now in Punjab, but we exposed them (BJP),” Kejriwal had said.    On September 1, the Delhi Assembly had passed the confidence motion tabled by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.  After winning the confidence motion, Kejriwal had said he brought it only to prove to the country that the BJP cannot buy his MLAs and the saffron party’s ‘Operation Lotus’ had “failed” in Delhi.

Punjab DGP constitutes SIT over ‘leaked objectionable videos’ of students

Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav on Monday constituted a three-member all-women Special Investigating Team (SIT), under the supervision of Additional DGP Gurpreet Deo, to investigate allegations by Chandigarh University hostellers over their alleged ‘leaked objectionable videos’.

The DGP said one student and two others were arrested. He thanked his counterparts in Himachal Police for excellent cooperation. “Electronic devices seized and sent for forensic examination. The SIT will go to the bottom of the conspiracy. No person to be spared, if found involved, ” said Yadav in a video message.

He appealed to everyone to maintain peace and harmony. “Don’t fall to unverified rumours. Let’s work together for peace in society, ” he added.

Responding immediately, Himachal DGP Sanjay Kundu said the police reacted to the request of Punjab Police with sensitivity and professionalism.

“We nabbed the accused. Congrats to Dr Monika, Superintendent of Police, Shimla, and her team for great professional work, ” Kundu tweeted.

Huge protests broke out on the university campus in Mohali district after a girl allegedly leaked private videos of her hostel mates online.

A day after daylong protest, silence returned to the campus on Monday as the local administration and the university agreed to investigate the demand of the students over objectionable videos of several girl students that were recorded by a hosteller and shared with her friend in Shimla.

The police arrested an MBA first-year student of the university, while her friend and another person were held in Shimla.

As the matter drew angry political reactions, the university authorities clarified that “no videos were found of any student which are objectionable, except a personal video shot by a girl which she shared with her boyfriend”.

Also dismissing reports of suicide attempt by some students who were allegedly filmed, the authorities said “there are rumours that seven girls have committed suicide whereas the fact is that no girl has taken any such step”.

Senior Superintendent of Police Vivek Soni, who is leading the investigation team, categorically told the media on Sunday that no attempt to suicide was reported after the incident came to light. Also, he said, so far there is no evidence of the video going viral.

“As per the investigation, the accused made her own video and shared it with her boyfriend. There is no video of other students made by her. There is no evidence of that so far. A lot of misinformation and rumours are doing the rounds. We should respect the modesty of the accused student as we are investigating the matter, ” he said.

As per reports, the accused hosteller sent nude images and videos to her male friend in Shimla, resulting in the footage being circulated online.

As the news spread, a massive protest was staged on the university campus on Saturday night with scores of hostellers raising the ‘we want justice’ slogan.

Meanwhile, terming the incident as unfortunate, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann ordered a high-level probe into the matter.

The Chief Minister said that “daughters are our dignity and pride”, adding that any such incident is highly condemnable.

He categorically said that anyone found guilty will not be spared and severe action will be taken against the perpetrators of this crime.

Capt Amarinder’s joining BJP is wrong decision: Deepender Hooda

Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda on Monday termed former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh’s decision to join the BJP as a wrong decision as after the farmers’ protest it will not be appreciated by the people.

Amarinder Singh was asked to step down as the Chief Minister of Punjab in September last year by the Congress following a power tussle within the party, and in subsequent Assembly election the party was wiped out.

Ahead of his joining the BJP, Singh met the party president J.P. Nadda.

Speculation of Amarinder Singh joining the BJP had grown stronger after he met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on September 12.

“Had a very productive meeting with Hon’ble Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Discussed various issues pertaining to national security, the rising cases of narco-terrorism in Punjab and the future roadmap for the overall holistic development of Punjab, ” Singh had tweeted after meeting Shah.

Singh had floated his own party after quitting the Congress last year citing humiliation by the grand-old party.

The two-time chief minister of Punjab had fought the Assembly elections in the state earlier this year in alliance with the BJP as well as Akali Dal (Sanyukt).

His party — Punjab Lok Congress — had failed to get even a single seat during the Assembly elections. Amarinder Singh himself lost from his hometurf Patiala urban constituency.
