Six people including Captain Chet Bahadur Gurung and five Mexican nationals were aboard the aircraft, the official said.

Punjab Police along with NDRF, SDRF and Army intensify rescue operations at flood hit districts

Chandigarh: With incessant rains continuing to lash across the region for the third consecutive day, the Punjab Police along with the teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have scaled up the rescue and evacuation operations in flood-ravaged districts in the state, said Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav here on Monday. The worst-affected districts include SAS Nagar, Rupnagar, Fatehgarh Sahib, Jalandhar Rural and Patiala.

Pertinently, following directions of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to ensure an elaborate flood protection mechanism is in place, DGP Gaurav Yadav and Special DGP Law and Order Arpit Shukla have been personally supervising the situation in the state, while, CPs/SSPs have been asked to remain in the field and personally monitor the situation in their concerned districts at regular intervals.

DGP Gaurav Yadav said that 15 teams of NDRF and two units of SDRF have been deployed in the worst-hit districts to plug breaches and carry out evacuation and rescue operations. Additionally, 12 columns of the Army have also been called in to help Civil Administration in the districts including Rupnagar, Patiala, Fatehgarh Sahib, Ferozepur, Jalandhar, SBS Nagar, SAS Nagar and Pathankot.

“Our teams along with NDRF, SDRF and Army have been working round-the-clock in extremely challenging conditions to safeguard the life and property of the people, ” he said.

Divulging more details, Special DGP Arpit Shukla said that the state control room has been actively working 24×7 for flood mitigation and hourly reports are being taken from districts to know the real-time situation in their concerned districts.

“Anyone requiring any kind of help can call the 112 helpline number, ” he said, while urging people of the state not to panic and cooperate with the administration and police. He also appealed to the people residing in low-lying or flood-prone areas that they should move to safer places or relief centres set up by their concerned district administration for their safety.

Meanwhile, Special DGP said that Punjab Police have made extensive arrangements including sandbags, tents, lights, langars and food packets, medicines and ambulances, rescue boats, recovery vans/JCBs, life jackets, communication and public address systems to deal with any kind of exigency arising out of floods. Flawed plan: Manipur Police ask farmers to contact SP before field visits

In what can only be described as a poorly executed plan to provide security arrangements to farmers, the Manipur Police have issued a directive, urging farmers not to venture out to their agricultural fields without notifying the respective Superintendent of Police (SP) in their districts. The announcement was made by Inspector General of Police I K Muivah during a press conference at the Manipur Police Headquarters.

Muivah said: “At this point, farmers should not venture out to the field all by themselves without informing police. Because that will be very hazardous and risky. And we would appeal to the public that they should meet with SP and inform them about their requirements and the SP will accordingly make security arrangements and that the farming activities be done in coordination like that with the security forces.”

During the press conference, media personnel inquired about the provision of a dedicated phone number for farmers to contact the SP more easily. However, to the disappointment of many, Muivah could not provide such a number, making it appear that the government has not prepared well enough to address the situation.

Muivah further highlighted, “To facilitate the agricultural activities during this season, the police department is providing security, especially for facilitating agricultural activities under the guidance of the Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh.”

Regarding the deployment of security personnel, Muivah underlined, “The personnel will be deployed under the DC and SP, in consultation with the agriculture department and also the local population – the farmers as to where the security requirements are there. And these are the places where the planting activities are to take place.” He emphasized, “No farmers should go out for farming if they have not informed the SP.”

Considering the tense situation and the incidents of violence reported across various parts of the state, Muivah informed, “During the last 24 hours, state police and central forces conducted massive search operations in the vulnerable and fringe areas in Churachandpur district, Bishnupur, and Kangpokpi district.” The IG informed that there was no report of recovery of arms and ammunition in the last 24 hours.

Considering the tense situation and the incidents of violence reported across various parts of the state, the Manipur Police’s recent operations have aimed to maintain law and order. However, the lack of a dedicated phone number and the absence of concrete preparations raise doubts about the government’s ability to effectively address the security concerns of farmers.

Two earthquakes hit Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda region

Jammu and Kashmir experienced two medium-intensity earthquakes on Monday morning, with no reports of casualties or property damage.

The National Center for Seismology (NCS) provided details of the seismic activity.

The first earthquake, measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale, occurred at 5.38 AM. Its epicenter was located in the Doda region of Jammu and Kashmir, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Shortly after, at 5.43 AM, a second earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale occurred in the same Doda region, at a depth of eight kilometers.

The region of Kashmir is known to be seismically active, making it highly vulnerable to earthquakes. In the past, devastating earthquakes have caused significant damage in this area.

In 2005, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake resulted in the loss of over 80,000 lives on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border between Indian-administered and Pakistani-administered regions of Kashmir.  However, the recent earthquakes have not caused any significant harm, providing relief to the residents of Jammu and Kashmir.
