Migratory birds from Europe, Central Asia, Siberia flock to Kashmir wetlands

Hundreds of migratory birds from Europe and Western countries have arrived in the wetland reserves of Jammu and Kashmir, as winter approaches. The winged visitors have a longstanding tradition of seeking refuge in Kashmir during the harsh winter months elsewhere, marking a centuries-old migration pattern.

Last year alone, around twelve lakh migratory birds journeyed from Eastern Europe and Central Asia to Kashmir’s wetlands, a testament to the area’s appeal as a winter haven.

Wildlife authorities collaborate with various agencies to conduct annual censuses tracking these avian guests, highlighting the region’s significance in providing a relatively hospitable environment compared to their freezing northern hemisphere habitats.

The birds, originating from places like Siberia, China, the Philippines, Eastern Europe, and Japan, start arriving in October, seeking respite from extreme cold conditions. The wetlands of Kashmir, including Hokersar, Wular Lake, Haigam, Shalbugh, among others, become bustling habitats for these visitors until March when they return to their homelands.

However, the persistent threat of poaching has been a concern for both the migratory birds and the Wildlife Department. Efforts have been made to mitigate this threat, with increased vigilance and regular checks conducted to curb illegal hunting activities. Measures to maintain adequate water levels in the wetlands have also been undertaken to ensure a conducive environment for the visiting birds.

Recently, two wetlands in Kashmir—Shallabugh in Ganderbal district and Haigam in Srinagar—were designated as Ramsar sites, adding to the list of internationally important wetland sites in the region.

Ramsar sites, named after the convention established in 1971, aim to protect and sustainably use wetland resources through international cooperation and national conservation measures.

The addition of these sites brings the total number of Ramsar sites in Jammu and Kashmir to five.

In his understanding, only a Democratic structure which gave space to various cultural, political, and socio-economic trends to express themselves could hold India together.”

“Today, as we gather in Shanti Van, to pay our revered tributes to him, we must preserve, protect and defend India’s Constitution and our long-cherished Democratic institutions and principles – his enduring legacy, ” Kharge said.

Young India fed up with betrayal of govt: Kharge

New Delhi- Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday slammed the Centre over the issue of unemployment after a girl climbed up an electric pole in Telangana during the Prime Minister’s rally, saying ‘young India is fed up with betrayal of the government’.

Targeting the government, Kharge in a post on X said, “While the Prime Minister was speaking in Telangana, in a very disturbing visual, a girl climbed up an electricity pole in order to attract attention to the real issues facing the nation.

“Young India is fed up with Modi government’s rank betrayal. They aspired for Jobs, but in return got a 45-year-high Unemployment rate, ” he said.

He said that they wanted economic empowerment, but in return the BJP gave a backbreaking price rise, which has reduced their savings to a 47-year low.

“They yearned for social and economic justice, but in return the Modi government gave them ever-rising economic inequality. Richest five per cent Indians own over 60 per cent of India’s wealth, while the middle class and poor suffer. They strived for a safe India for our women and children, but crimes against women, children, dalits, adivasis and backward classes have sadly increased by leaps and bounds, ” Kharge said.

“They wanted unity and harmony in a diverse country like us, but got hate and divisiveness. Modi government and BJP are crushing the dreams and aspirations of India’s youth, ” the Congress chief said.

His remarks came after the Prime Minister, who addressed a rally in Hyderabad Parade Grounds on Saturday, stopped his election speech midway after he noticed a young girl climbing a structure on which lights were fixed, in a bid to call for his attention.

The Prime Minister repeatedly urged her to get down from the structure, saying that the condition of electric wires appeared to be not good.

PM Modi was in the city to address a meeting organised by the Madiga Reservation Porata Samithi (MRPS), a community organisation of Madigas, one of the biggest constituents of Scheduled Castes in Telugu states.

The 119-member Telangana will go to polls on November 30 and counting of votes will be on December 3.

Congress guarantees Rs 2.5 lakhs for ‘Meri Bitiya Rani’ scheme in Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal (MP) : In a major guarantee to parents of newborn daughters in Madhya Pradesh, the Congress today promised that every girl child will be given Rs 2.5 lakhs from the birth to their marriage under the ‘Meri Bitiya Rani’ scheme. This was announced by the Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi at a public rally here today.

Priyanka Gandhi appealed to people of Madhya Pradesh, women in particular, to vote wisely and carefully as it was too precious for the future of their children.

Gandhi urged people, it was the time to get back the government which they had elected in 2018, but was stolen by the BJP using money.

Referring to the ‘Ladli Scheme’ of the BJP government announced just two months ago, she cautioned against getting lured. She asked, why was the scheme launched just two months before. Did women not need this help during the last five years? she asked.

Taking a dig at the BJP leaders for asking what the Congress did, she said, the school Mr.Modi went to, was made by the Congress. “I don’t know whether Mr. Modi went to the college, but I am sure that his ‘Entire Political Science degree’ certificate was printed on a computer that was brought by the Congress”, she remarked, while pointing out, it was her father late Rajiv Gandhi who had introduced computers in India when he was the Prime Minister.

Gandhi also referred to the progressive foresight of first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru who set up the IITs and IIMS and so many public sector industries, which provided jobs also. “But their (the BJP’s) thinking is different as they are selling everything to their industrialist friends”, she remarked.

The Congress General Secretary urged people to compare the 15 months of the Congress government led by Kamal Nath, before it was stolen by the BJP, with three and a half years of the BJP government. She listed several achievements of the 15 months long Congress government, including waiving off of loans of 27 lakh farmers, setting up of Gaushalas, 27 per cent reservation for OBCs, ten percent for economically backward and 100 units of free power. Compared to that, she said, the BJP government had provided just 21 jobs in three years.

Announcing guarantees for the people of Madhya Pradesh, she said, these will be implemented immediately after Congress forms government here. She announced that women will get a monthly cash assistance of Rs 1,500.

Priyanka said, the Minimum Support Price for wheat will be Rs 2,600 per quintal and for paddy it will be Rs 2,500 per quintal. 100 units of electricity will be provided free of cost and up to 200 units will be charged at half the rate. Farmers’ loans will be waived off. Irrigation facilities up to 5 horsepower will be provided free of cost.

There will be Rs 25 lakh health insurance cover, besides Rs ten lakh accident cover for everyone. The backlog of the vacancies of OBCs, SCs and STs will be cleared at the earliest, besides the process of filling up about two lakh government vacancies will be accelerated. There will be 27 percent reservation for the OBCs.

Besides free education, students will be paid a monthly stipend at the rate of Rs 500, Rs 1,000 and Rs 1,500 depending which class they are studying in.

Priyanka Gandhi specially appealed for the party candidate from Sanwer Rina Baurasi Setiya urging them to vote for her and get her elected to the Vidhan Sabha.
