Harsimrat Kaur seeks international status for Bathinda airport

Chandigarh:  Saying Bathinda is a strategic hub connecting eight districts across three states, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Tuesday sought to upgrade the city’s airport to introduce international flights to Canada.

In a missive to Union Minister for Civil Aviation Rammohan Naidu, she called for introducing a daily Delhi-Bathinda Alliance flight utilising Boeing aircraft and flights under the regional connectivity scheme UDAN. She also urged for the introduction of flights linking the two holy Takhts of Sri Hazur Sahib in Nanded and Sri Patna Sahib.

Explaining the importance of Bathinda, Harsirmat Badal said the city was positioned as a strategic hub spanning from Sirsa in Haryana to Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan encompassing Sangrur, Mansa, Ferozepur and Faridkot districts in Punjab.

She said Bathinda’s importance even extended beyond geographical boundaries as it encompassed Asia’s largest Indian Army cantonment, an Air Force station, a Central University, a major oil refinery, three thermal plants and the revered Takht of the Sikhs — Sri Damdama Sahib.

She said since there was no airport within a 300-km radius, the city’s airport presented a fit case for upgradation to an international airport.

“Since there are a large number of students from the eight districts, including those in the adjacent states, who were studying in Canada, flights to Canada could be started from Bathinda, ” she said

She said this would also facilitate NRIs as well as families who were travelling to and fro between the two destinations and had to presently land in Delhi and then travel by road to their destinations in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.

She said similarly starting a daily Delhi-Bathinda Alliance air flight would result in the region’s economic and social development. She said while a Delhi-Bathinda-Delhi flight had been flagged off in 2016 and operated five times a week with an impressive 80 per cent occupancy, it was suspended during the Covid-19 pandemic.

She said in September 2023 a Bathinda-Hindon-Bathinda flight had been initiated utilising ATR aircraft, this should be replaced with a Delhi-Bathinda Alliance flight.

She said linking the two Takhts of Sri Hazur Sahib, Nanded, and Sri Patna Sahib would facilitate Sikh pilgrims and called for acceding to this long-pending demand of the Sikh community.

Gaming App scam: ED raids premises of key link in Kolkata

Kolkata:  The Enforcement Directorate (ED) was conducting raid and search operations in a residential complex on the southern outskirts of Kolkata on Tuesday in connection with an investigation into a multi-crore gaming app scam in the country.

The ED team was accompanied by the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF).

Early in the morning, the team of ED officials reached a residential complex at Kalikapur on Kolkata’s outskirts and started conducting raid and search operations at an office-cum-residence on the second floor of a building within the housing complex.

Although the central agency officials were tight-lipped on the details of the particular gaming app in relation to which the raid and search operations are being conducted, sources said the total scam involvement in the case is over Rs 100 crore.

Sources also said that the money invested by the duped investors through this app was first converted into dollars and then parked in China. In this entire case, sources said, this particular office at Kalikapur acted as an important hub for such dubious monetary transactions.

Besides Kolkata, the sources said, the operators of the gaming app also had operations centres in other cities and towns throughout India.

Sources further said that the modus operandi of the scam was like many other gaming apps against whom ED had been conducting probe operations for quite some time.

Initially, the investors were allured to invest smaller amounts against promises of hefty returns and in the initial dealing those promises were fulfilled and the investors used to win lucrative amounts. Once the target for setting the greed for even higher returns was set in the minds of a section of the investors, thereafter the app operators used to allure them to invest higher amounts.

Thereafter, the actual scam started where the linked bank accounts of the investors were blocked from payments being credited there.

Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections to be held in September: Reddy

Union Minister G. Krishna Reddy, the Election Incharge for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, said on Monday that the elections in the Union Territory will be held in September.

Speaking at the ‘Ekatma Mahotsav’ rally organized by the BJP at Bana Singh Stadium in RS Pura, Reddy expressed confidence in the BJP’s chances of securing a majority. The rally marked the fifth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, which was repealed by Parliament on August 5, 2019.

Reddy urged voters to support the BJP to maintain the pace of development and to combat terrorism. He noted a reduction in ISI activities in Jammu and Kashmir since the revocation of Article 370 by the Modi-led government and warned neighboring countries against supporting terrorism, stating that such actions would have serious consequences.

The rally was attended by senior BJP leaders, including National General Secretary Tarun Chugh, J&K BJP President Ravinder Raina, and former Deputy Chief Minister Kavinder Gupta.

Reddy highlighted the positive changes in Jammu and Kashmir following the abrogation of Article 370, including the empowerment of women and other marginalized groups and the reduction of terrorism and separatist activities. He warned that a return to power by parties like the National Conference (NC) or Congress could lead to a resurgence of these issues.

“The BJP is the only party capable of ensuring peace and preventing Pakistan-sponsored terrorism from targeting Indian citizens,” Reddy stated.

He described the abrogation of Article 370 as a “proud moment” for the country and the people of Jammu and Kashmir, noting that it had granted rights to women and other deprived sections of society and ended activities like terrorism, stone-pelting, and the hoisting of Pakistani flags.

Reddy urged people not to vote for the Congress and the NC, suggesting that their return to power could lead to a revival of terrorism and separatism.

New Delhi : The Congress today party that it will bring a privilege motion against the Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for misleading the house on various counts.

SC upholds appointment of aldermen to MCD by Delhi L-G

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the decision of the Delhi Lieutenant Governor (L-G) to appoint ‘aldermen’ to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) without the aid and advice of the elected government.

In May last year, a bench headed by CJI D.Y. Chandrachud and comprising Justices P.S. Narasimha and J.B. Pardiwala had reserved its judgment on a plea filed by Delhi government challenging the gazette notifications, whereby the L-G appointed 10 nominated members to the MCD on his own initiative, and not on the aid and advice of the council of ministers.

Pronouncing the verdict, Justice Narasimha said that the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act made by Parliament required the L-G to act in his discretion.

“The text of Section 3(3)(b) of the Act (as amended from time to time) expressly enables the Lieutenant Governor to nominate persons having special knowledge to the Corporation… The power to be exercised is the statutory duty of Lieutenant Governor and not the executive power of the state, ” the top court ruled.

In its plea, the Delhi government said: “This is the first time since Article 239AA came into effect in 1991 that such a nomination has been made by the Lieutenant Governor completely by-passing the elected government, thereby abrogating to an unelected office a power that belongs to the duly elected government.”

The plea contended that nominations in question have been made under Section 3(3)(b)(i) of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957 (DMC Act), which provides that the MCD should include, apart from the elected councillors, ten persons of not less than 25 of age and who have special knowledge or experience in municipal administration, “to be nominated by the administrator”, adding that neither the section nor any other provision of law says anywhere that such nomination is to be made by the administrator in his discretion.

It said it is a settled position of constitutional law for the last 50 years that the powers conferred on a nominal and unelected head of state are to be exercised only under the “aid and advice” of the council of ministers.

In a written response filed before the apex court, the L-G office, defending its decision, said that the governance of municipalities is independent of the regime of governance of the elected state governments and the role of L-G as an administrator under the DMC Act is not a “mirror-image” of what is provided under the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD Act), or Article 239AA of the Constitution.
