EAM S. Jaishankar slams Canadian ‘double standards’

New Delhi External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar on Monday slammed the “double standards” adopted by the Justin Trudeau-led government in Canada on the way it treats Indian envoys, and its expectations from New Delhi on Canadian diplomats’ privileges.

Speaking on the topic, “The India Century – Diplomacy Redefined” at the two-day “NDTV World Summit 2024 – The India Century” event, EAM Jaishankar said: “The licence they give themselves is totally different from the restrictions they impose on diplomats in Canada.”

Referring to the troubled relations with Canada in recent times, S. Jaishankar said Canada has a problem with Indian diplomats trying to find out about what is happening there in relation to India, “but the Canadian diplomat in India will have no problem with collecting information on our military or police, profiling people, targeting people to be stopped in Canada”.

He also took a swipe at Ottawa for interpreting freedom of expression as per its own convenience.

When we tell them that there are people openly threatening leaders and diplomats of India, their answer is “freedom of speech”, the External Affairs Minister said, slamming the Canadian government for saying that issuing threats to air carriers was part of freedom of speech.

Hinting that Canada’s credibility was taking a hit due to its double speak on freedom of speech, the minister said the Canadian government can list out 20-25 Indian journalists saying they are interfering in my country because they have made social media posts and this is the same government that says threat to airlines is part of freedom of speech.

He also shared the example of an objection raised by Ottawa when an Indian journalist said in a post that the Canadian envoy walked out of the South Block looking very grumpy and Ottawa called it foreign interference.

“There are countries which feel your concerns don’t matter. That’s part of our politics. But if the slightest of thing happens to them, even if it is legitimate, they start jumping up and down, ” S. Jaishankar said.

Despite the diplomatic row, EAM Jaishankar said that India would like to maintain people-to-people relations with Canada even though New Delhi is having problems with a segment of politics in that country.

“I won’t be so anxious on issues like about the safety of Indian families there, ” he said.

Earlier, in his first reaction after being withdrawn by New Delhi following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s continued “hostility” towards India, senior diplomat and High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma on Sunday termed the allegations levelled by Ottawa as “politically motivated” with no evidence whatsoever presented by the Canadian government of India’s alleged involvement in last year’s killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

“Nothing at all. No evidence was presented. Politically motivated, ” Verma told Canada’s CTV ahead of his departure from the country.

India recently decided to withdraw its High Commissioner and “other targeted diplomats and officials” from Canada after the Trudeau government – in what was termed as “preposterous imputations” by New Delhi – suggested that the Indian High Commissioner and other diplomats are ‘persons of interest’ in a matter related to an investigation in the country.

Aim to make India’s century as the world’s century: PM Modi

New Delhi: Stressing that there is no scope for rest for him as the government aims to fulfil its goals for a ‘Viksit Bharat’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday that he aims to make India’s century as the world’s century.

“We need stability and sustenance for growth and India is working on it. Our third term gives a message of stability. Initiatives taken by India are a solution towards world problems. We would aim to ensure that India’s century is the world’s century, ” PM Modi told the gathering at the ‘NDTV World Summit 2024’ in the national capital.

The world is amazed at the Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) India has created, including UPI which has gone global.

“The world celebrated the Chandrayaan mission. When India grows, the world feels happy. India’s growth will benefit the world. The country drove the world’s growth in the past but during colonialism, we couldn’t. Now, we are independent and ready to drive the growth, ” PM Modi stressed.

India is now the fifth-largest economy in the world and is on its way to becoming the third-largest one sooner than expected. “The dreams we have seen, the pledges we have made, there is no rest, no relaxation, ” PM Modi added.

Highlighting the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, PM Modi said they worked on two pillars — building airports in tier 2 and 3 cities and making air travel affordable.

“Over three lakh flights have taken off under the UDAN scheme. Many flights connect the small cities. Now there are over 150 airports in India, ” said the Prime Minister.

“In the last 8-9 years, the participation of Indian universities has increased. Patent applications are at an all-time high. Over 2, 500 research centres of companies across the world are located in India. We are taking the lead in giving a vision for the global future, ” said PM Modi.

He also said that India is moving ahead with a forward-looking approach and the metric of success from now on for us would be ‘what we want to achieve” in the years to come.

The PM said that India is on an unprecedented growth path and the world has seen robust transformation and reforms in the first 125 days of the NDA-led government’s third term.

J&K: TRF claims responsibility for terror attack in Ganderbal, killing 7, including a doctor

The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar-e-Taiba offshoot, has claimed responsibility for a terrorist attack in Ganderbal on Sunday, killing seven people, including a doctor and six migrant laborers.

The attack targeted a construction site for a military tunnel project in Gagangir, Sonamarg region. According to the TRF, the group had previously warned against participating in “illegal projects,” referring to the ongoing tunnel construction.

Two labourers were killed on the spot when terrorists opened fire on their camp, while the doctor and four others succumbed to injuries later. The attack comes shortly after Omar Abdullah assumed office as the new Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir following the recent elections.

Omar Abdullah condemned the attack, calling it a “cowardly assault” on migrant labourers. Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti also expressed her condolences, saying on X (formerly Twitter), “Unequivocally condemn this senseless act of violence against two laborers in Ganderbal. Deepest condolences to their families.”

The TRF, banned by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in January 2023 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, is classified as a terrorist organization for its links to Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba.

The attack underscores rising security concerns in the region, particularly with new infrastructure projects underway. The incident also follows a recent attack in Shopian, where a laborer was killed by militants.

AAP slashed Punjab farm fires by 50 pc, BJP playing dirty politics : Atishi

New Delhi:  Delhi Chief Minister Atishi on Sunday criticised the BJP for what she termed “dirty politics” over the increasing pollution levels in the national capital, particularly due to stubble burning.

She refuted the BJP’s claims that Punjab was the primary contributor to pollution, asserting that since the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) took charge in Punjab, the number of farm fires has decreased by 50 per cent.

Speaking at a press conference, Atishi said, “The pollution levels in Delhi are rising. Both air and water pollution have been increasing, evident from the foam at Kalindi Kunj, showing the rising pollution in the Yamuna.”

She blamed the BJP for failing to address the issue and engaging in political games instead.

Atishi stressed the success of AAP’s efforts in Punjab, stating that in 2021, before the AAP government was formed, Punjab recorded 71, 300 stubble-burning incidents. However, by 2023, this number was halved to 36, 600. She attributed this reduction to the AAP’s sustained efforts over two years.

Citing data from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Atishi highlighted that between October 1 and 15, 2023, Punjab recorded only 811 farm fires, down 27 per cent from the previous year’s 1, 105. In contrast, she pointed out, Haryana saw a 23 per cent increase in farm fires during the same period, rising from 341 in 2022 to 400 in 2023.

Atishi questioned why the BJP governments in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh couldn’t replicate the success of Punjab in reducing stubble burning, accusing them of playing “dirty politics” at the expense of Delhi’s residents.

“If AAP’s Punjab government can reduce stubble burning, why can’t the BJP governments in Haryana and UP do the same?” she asked.

The Delhi CM also addressed the issue of pollution from diesel buses, stating that all buses in Delhi are now either CNG or electric. In contrast, she noted that 100 per cent of the buses entering Delhi from Haryana and UP still run on diesel.

“The AAP government under Arvind Kejriwal has introduced more than 2, 000 electric buses in Delhi. Why haven’t the BJP governments in Haryana and UP done the same?” she questioned.

Atishi further raised concerns about pollution from brick kilns, noting that while there are no brick kilns in Delhi, Haryana and UP have over 3, 800 in their respective NCR regions, contributing significantly to pollution.

In addition to pollution, Atishi also slammed the BJP for the deteriorating law and order situation in Delhi. She referred to recent incidents, including a shooting in the Welcome area and a bomb blast outside a school, accusing the BJP of blocking the work of the elected government.

“The BJP spends all its time obstructing the work of the AAP government. I urge them to let us work for the people of Delhi, ” she concluded.

PM Modi to inaugurate Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa Airport

Bhopal:  Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually inaugurate a new airport in the Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh, Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla said on Sunday.

The airport, located in the Vindhya region, recently received its operating licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), making it the sixth operational airport in the state.

While PM Modi will inaugurate the airport digitally from Varanasi, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Deputy CM Rajendra Shukla and Rural Development Minister Prahlad Patel, who is also the in-charge for Rewa will be present at the airport.

With Rewa joining the ranks of airports in Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Gwalior, and Khajuraho, the state aims to improve infrastructure and economic potential in the underserved Vindhya region.

The preparation for developing the airport in Rewa’s Chorahata area (the airstrip existed for the last several decades) already began around three years back, however, the formal announcement was made ahead of the Assembly election in 2023.

Rajendra Shukla, who hails from Rewa, had been running from Bhopal to New Delhi (Airport Authority of India) since 2014 to bring an airport into the city, as he had told IANS earlier.

“Rewa airport is a big achievement of the Vindhya region. It will have a landing facility for up to 72-seater aircraft. The airport will promote tourism in the Vindhya belt. It will also provide impetus to medical, engineering, education, trade and industries, ” Shukla said.

Earlier on September 10, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) granted approval for an operating licence to the airport at Rewa. Both passenger and cargo flight services will be available once the operation begins.

The DGCA’s approval marks a significant step toward enhancing both economic growth and regional connectivity in Madhya Pradesh.

The airport will accommodate both passenger and cargo flights, which is expected to boost tourism, employment, and trade in the region. Rewa is renowned for its cultural and historical landmarks, and the airport will make these attractions more accessible, potentially drawing more visitors and businesses to the area.

The opening of Rewa Airport is expected to bridge the connectivity gap in the region, contributing to the broader economic development of Madhya Pradesh by facilitating the movement of goods and people across key regions.

Omar Abdullah condemns terrorist killing of non-local in Jammu & Kashmir

Srinagar: Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday condemned the killing of a non-local by terrorists in Shopian district.

Omar said on his X on Friday, “Very sorry to hear about the death of Ashok Chouhan at the hands of militants in South Kashmir. These attacks are abhorrent & must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. I send my condolences to the family & loved ones of the deceased.”

On Friday, police recovered the bullet-riddled dead body of a Bihar resident identified as Ashok Chouhan in Wanduna village of Zainpora area in Shopian district.

“The body was sent for completion of medico-legal formalities. A case has been registered in this incident and an investigation is underway, ” police said.

Police has confirmed that this was an act of terrorism. A manhunt has been launched to trace the assassins of the non-local civilian.

The terrorist attack on a non-local has come two days after an elected government headed by Omar Abdullah took office in J&K. The Assembly election, which took place in J&K after 10 years, was largely people participative with an average of 68 per cent voters exercising their franchise to show faith in the country’s democracy and its institutions.

Non-local skilled and semi-skilled labourers including masons, carpenters, paddy harvesters and others engaged in different labour-intensive occupations have been attacked by the terrorists in Kashmir Valley in the past.

On April 8, this year, terrorists barged into an eatery in Shopian district and fired at a non-local taxi driver from Punjab, Paramjit Singh, who was accompanying foreign tourists. The guide sustained three bullet injuries.

Earlier in February this year, two non-locals from Punjab were shot dead by terrorists in old city of Srinagar. A week later, Jammu and Kashmir police said that the terrorists, who killed the two non-locals, were arrested in Srinagar and the weapon used in the attack was recovered.

Delhi court grants bail to Satyendar Jain after 2 years in money laundry case

New Delhi : Senior AAP leader Satyendar Jain granted bail on Friday after more than two years in prison in connection with the Delhi excise policy scam case. The Rouse Avenue Court, citing a “delay in trial” and Jain’s “long incarceration,” set the bail at ₹50,000 with two sureties of the same amount. Special Judge Vishal Gogne stated, “Considering the delay in trial and long incarceration of 18 months, and the fact that the trial will take long to start, let alone conclude, the accused is favourably suited for relief.”

Jain was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in May 2022 on charges of laundering money through four companies allegedly linked to him. The ED’s case is based on an FIR lodged by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in 2017 under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The court’s decision to release Jain comes a month after AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal was granted bail by the Supreme Court in the same case. Jain’s release has sparked a jubilant response from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), with party members claiming that the BJP’s “conspiracy” had failed.

On X (formerly Twitter), AAP wrote, “Satyamev Jayate. Another conspiracy of BJP failed as Satyendra Jain ji, who brought about a health revolution in Delhi by building magnificent Mohalla Clinics, got bail from the court. The real face of BJP has been exposed again to the entire country.”

Kejriwal also expressed his elation, saying, “Satyendra Jain got bail after spending more than two years in jail. What was his fault? Several raids were conducted at his place, and not a single penny was recovered. His only fault was that he built mohalla clinics and made all treatment free for the people of Delhi. Modi ji put him in jail to close down mohalla clinics and stop free treatment for the poor. But God is with us. Today, he too has been released. Welcome back Satyendra!”

Manish Sisodia, another senior AAP leader, echoed similar sentiments, criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP. “It makes me happy that our party’s senior leader Satyendar Jain has been granted bail. PM Modi and BJP should apologize to the people of Delhi because Satyendar Jain was sent to jail, which stalled the development work at Delhi hospitals and mohalla clinics. They jailed me, Satyendar Jain, and Arvind Kejriwal, but couldn’t find a single penny at our places. They levelled false allegations against us, and their ED jailed us based on those allegations,” Sisodia said.

Both Sisodia and Kejriwal were also jailed alongside Jain as part of the investigations by the ED and CBI into the Delhi excise policy scam case. Jain’s release is seen as a significant development for the party, with its leaders hoping to regain momentum as the trial continues.

Omar Abdullah pushes for J&K statehood with cabinet resolution

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday led the Jammu and Kashmir cabinet in passing a resolution calling for the restoration of the region’s statehood.

In its first meeting, the newly formed cabinet urged the Union government to reinstate J&K’s statehood, which was revoked in 2019. Abdullah is expected to travel to New Delhi in the coming days to personally submit the resolution draft to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Meanwhile, the Congress, a key ally of the National Conference, has opted not to join the cabinet until statehood is officially restored.

The Indian government had abrogated Article 370 in August 2019, stripping Jammu and Kashmir of its special status and reorganizing the region into two Union Territories—Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

Why Er Rashid failed to strike a chord with voters this time

The timing of Rashid’s release went against him. The narrative by the rival parties that he had been released to split the mandate in Kashmir caught on, making people suspect his bonafides.  Also, Rashid failed to forcefully dispel the allegations levelled against him.  A report by Riyaz Wani

When the Awami Ittehad Party leader Engineer Rashid was released on September 12 to campaign in the Assembly election, it was as if a big rock had been hurled into the choppy waters of Kashmir politics. The ripples generated from the impact threatened to disrupt the course of the election in which the National Conference-Congress coalition and the BJP appeared to be in a driving seat.

Rashid’s combative press conference at Delhi Press Club and subsequently his rousing welcome in Kashmir helped him set a new rival narrative. He kept the tempo for a few days, but from there on the things started unraveling and by the end of the campaign, most of his credibility had petered out. His brother could barely win his seat from their native constituency of Langate.

Analyzing the outcome later, the AIP said it lost as it was up against everyone else. A statement said the AIP conducted a day-long meeting to introspect and analyze the election outcome. It concluded that “the limited time for campaigning and reaching out to the masses impacted their ability to connect with the electorate.”

“Despite the challenges, including Er Rashid’s delayed bail and numerous attempts at character assassination, it was evident that the political landscape had become a battle of NC, PDP, PC, Apni Party, Congress, and BJP versus Er Rashid and his AIP,” the statement read.” “This clearly reflects the growing influence and rising prominence of Er Rashid and the AIP.”

Rashid has always been a maverick and consequently his politics has been dramatic and unpredictable.  With his entry, the election campaign became more interesting but it didn’t benefit him.

In the parliament election in May, Rashid, contesting as an underdog candidate from Baramulla parliamentary constituency won by a whopping 4,52,812 votes – two-thirds of the total – defeating political heavyweights such as former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah and Sajad Lone, a prominent leader, whose People’s Conference (PC) boasts of a strong footing in North Kashmir.

The key to Rashid’s success then was the groundswell that began in Langate and soon radiated out to the adjoining villages and towns including major urban centres such as Kupwara, Handwara, Baramulla and Sopore.

In the run-up to the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, Rashid, was arrested and charged by the National Investigation Agency under various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The NIA has accused him of receiving money from Pakistan to fund separatist activities in Jammu and Kashmir. Rashid has denied the charges.

Controversies have been part of Rashid’s political career. He was beaten by the BJP leaders inside the legislative assembly after holding a beef party. However, his campaign in the past against the Indian Army for taking the local youth in his area for “bonded labour” earned him support among a certain section of voters in Kashmir.

Although a familiar face, he was never as big a player in Kashmir politics as he has become following his stunning landslide win in Lok Sabha election. His party’s performance in the Assembly election has again cut him to the size. However, the AIP’s abysmal performance now has left people wondering as to why he didn’t win more seats and why the 15 of the 18 Assembly constituencies in North Kashmir where he got a lead during parliament elections didn’t vote for him – that is, other than Langate.

The analysts believe that the timing of Rashid’s release went against him. The narrative by the rival parties that he had been released to to split the mandate in Kashmir caught on, making people suspect his bonafides.  Reinforcing the allegations further, Rashid failed to forcefully dispel the allegations. This effectively cast him as a BJP agent, despite his protestations to the contrary. Hence the outcome.

PM Modi proposes holding NDA leaders conclave twice every year

Chandigarh :  Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described the meeting of NDA leaders in Chandigarh on Thursday as the largest get-together of non-Congress political parties post 1975, the year Emergency was imposed, and called for holding such a conclave twice every year, a BJP statement said.

Making a point about the deeper connect his government enjoys with people compared to the previous Congress-led UPA government, he said at the meeting that he has received over 4.5 crore letters in the past 10 years compared to only 5 lakh letters received by his predecessor. Manmohan Singh headed the UPA government during 2004-14.

This reflects people’s trust in his government, he said.

Modi said at the conclave attended by 17 chief ministers and 18 deputy chief ministers from the BJP and its several allies that smooth governance, fast decision-making and transparency in governance have helped in attracting investors and investment in the states ruled by the NDA.

The NDA is fulfilling the rising aspirations of the common citizens and it has been the distinction of its government to ensure the last mile delivery which has helped in building the trust in public towards the government since 2014, he said.

Modi dwelt on the concept of pro-people pro-active good governance (P2G2), stressing the need for greater interaction between all NDA-ruled states, as also among ministers and MLAs and advocated the use of social media for this.

The prime minister lauded the BJP’s win in Haryana as significant and historic, saying the NDA has secured the trust and support of all sections of society.

The opposition, he said, tried to portray a false narrative of the NDA being anti-farmer whereas it was the farmers who came out in large numbers to support the ruling party. People gave a clear message that they stand with progress and the good governance agenda of the NDA.

He said good governance ultimately means finding solutions to people’s problems, asserting that solution-centric governance with focus on grievance-redressal is a distinctive identity of all NDA state governments.

The statement said, “The prime minister complimented the gathering describing it as the largest group of non-Congress political parties post 1975. A total of 17 chief ministers and 18 deputy chief ministers participated in this conclave. The PM suggested that such meetings should be held twice every year.”

A total of six resolutions were passed in the meeting, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s proposal on the celebration of 75 years of the making of Constitution of India as “Samvidhan ka Amrut Mahotsav” and Home Minister Amit Shah’s proposal to observe 2025 as the 50th year of the “murder of democracy”, a reference to the Emergency.

Andhra Pradesh CM and TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu initiated the discussion on the concept of “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” and lauded Modi’s initiatives.

Buoyed by its win in the Haryana assembly polls, where political experts were almost unanimous in projecting a win for the Congress, the BJP decided to hold the meeting of all NDA chief ministers, a first in many years, in the state where the ruling alliance leaders were invited to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new state government.

Following its relatively muted performance in the Lok Sabha polls, the BJP is looking to build on the political momentum generated by its win in Haryana ahead of the contest against the INDIA bloc in Maharashtra and Jharkhand assembly polls next month.
