US designates Indian origin ISIS militant Siddhartha Dhar as 'global terrorist'

898404458The US State Department has designated Indian-origin ISIS militant from Britain, Siddhartha Dhar, as Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs).

Another Belgian-Moroccan citizen Abdelatif Gaini has also been designated as global terrorist.

Imposition of these sanctions and designations means that both of them are now denied the resources they require to plan and carry out any further terrorist attacks.

As per the media note released by the US Department of State, all of Dhar’s and Gaini’s property and interests in property subject to U.S. jurisdiction are blocked, and U.S. persons are generally prohibited from engaging in any transactions with them.

Siddhartha Dhar was a leading member of now-defunct terrorist organization Al-Muhajiroun. In late 2014, Dhar left the United Kingdom to travel to Syria to join ISIS. He is considered to have replaced ISIS executioner Mohammad Emwazi, also known as “Jihadi John.” Dhar is believed to be the masked leader who appeared in a January 2016 ISIS video of the execution of several prisoners ISIS accused of spying for the UK, says the note.

Emerging economies crucial for global  growth, says Rajan

raghuram-rajan1Emerging economies will play a key role in global growth and the Western world must realise that it cannot go a long way without their help, Former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan has pointed out.

Rajan, while speaking in Davos at a session of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting also highlighted that no one would be able to resolve any problem of a ‘fractured world’ if things are not set right soon.

“The approach of the Western world must change soon for the good, or else there may be a chance that we are not able to solve any of the problems of the ‘fractured world’,”  he said.

The West must realise that their population is ageing and the demand for their products would mostly come from the emerging world, said the Chicago University professor, who is credited with having predicted the global financial crisis of 2007.

Rajan,  who is known for his frank views on various economic and monetary policy matters,  said there is a risk that by the time the West goes to the emerging world for their support, they may have to answer quite a few questions about why they did not share the benefits earlier.

The issues facing the Western world include technology, ageing population and climate change, he highlighted.

He reportedly said some governments such as Singapore have done something to address the problems arising out of income inequality and the divisions in the society by setting up housing projects where middle class and lower middle class families can live together.

Rajan also took on the economists who frown upon the idea of economic narratives and said it has become difficult to make people believe in them for setting things right.

“When the economist hears the word narratives and stories he thinks it’s below me. They believe they are beyond the tradition of narratives,” he was quoted as saying by news agencies.

“Post World War II, we realised we have to come together once again and we need to break barriers of trade and everything else,” he added.

Asked whether he is optimistic or pessimistic on the issue of narratives, Rajan reportedly said politicians just pick the economic theory that fits in their scheme of things but he hopes things do not go out of hand and there is a solution before that.

NIA cannot question Hadiya's marriage, says SC

akhila-hadiyaWhile referring to the alleged love jihad case of Kerala, the Supreme Court on January 23 said that National Investigative Agency (NIA) can continue with its investigation but it cannot question the legitimacy of the marital status of Hadiya.

The three-judge Bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra also included Justice AM Khanwilkar and Justice DY Chandrachud said, “How can we say the marriage is not valid when she says she married someone on her own. She can choose independently. She is 24 years old.”

“Marriage has to be separate from criminal activity, otherwise we will be creating a bad precedent in law,” it added.

“NIA can investigate into all other aspects except marriage,” the Bench said.

Last year, the Kerala High Court has annulled Hadiya’s marriage to a Muslim man, Shafin Jahan, after her parents alleged that she had been forced to convert.

Woman dragged out of car, raped; husband held at gunpoint in Gurugram

rape-1516684902In the latest rape horror reported from Haryana, a 22-year-old woman was dragged out of a car and raped as her husband and brother-in-law were held at a gunpoint on January 21 near Business Park Tower in Sector 56 of Gurugram.

The family was returning from a function when they stopped their car in Sector 56 as the woman’s husband had to use the toilet. As the husband was relieving himself, two cars stopped near them and four men came out and started thrashing woman’s husband.

According to reports, when the men spotted the woman inside the car, one of them pulled her out, dragged her to the bushes and raped her while other three of them held her husband and brother-in-law at gunpoint.

The victim’s husband managed to note down the licence plate number of one of the vehicles (HR29Y1160) before they managed to flee the scene after committing the crime.

The accused identified as Deshvir, Dharmender, Pawan and the rapist Sanjeet have been arrested. All of them are residents of Johalka village near Sohna in Gurugram.

Raise tax exemption limit to Rs 3 lakh, advises SBI

H2018011837779With an increase in personal disposable income after 7th Pay Commission, the income tax exemption limit shall be hiked by Rs 50,000 to Rs 3 lakh, an SBI report said has suggested.

Saying that the move will benefit around 75 lakh people, the SBI’s Ecowrap report added that if the exemption limit of interest payments under housing loan is increased to Rs 2.5 lakhs for existing home loan buyers, from Rs 2 lakhs now, it will benefit 75 lakh home loan buyers and cost the government just about Rs 7,500 crore.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley is set to present the fifth and final full budget of the current government on February 1. The government has periodically increased the income tax slabs from Rs 22,000 in 1990-91 to Rs 2.5 lakh in 2014-15.

“Due to 7th pay commission, the personal disposable income has been increased, so we believe there is a need to raise the exemption limit to Rs 3 lakh. Due to such increase in limit, around 75 lakh tax payers will be exempted from income tax,” a news agency quoted the report ‘Union Budget: If wishes were horses!’ as pointing out.

It has also reportedly pitched for incentivising savings through bank deposits. In an effort to incentivise savings, it said, the government can exempt interest of savings bank deposits.

The exemption limit on TDS on interest on term deposits with banks may be raised from the present limit of Rs 10,000 per annum, the report said.

Also, the lock-in period for tax savings term deposits needs to be reduced to 3 years from the present 5 years and these deposits should be brought under EEE (exempt, exempt, exempt) tax regime.

The SBI report said that SBI’s expectations regarding the forthcoming budget are based upon principle of inclusive growth and meeting the medium and long term objectives set by the government.

“As per our reading of the things, budget should give priority to agriculture, MSME, infrastructure and affordable housing,” it said.

Agriculture reforms should aim at re-examination of legally created structures whose provisions are restrictive and create barriers to free trade, it said.

Centre in conjunction with states should emulate the price support schemes like in Madhya Pradesh and Haryana say ‘Bhavantar Krishi Yojana’ for major crops (including vegetables).

“This scheme will help farmers in situations (when wholesale price of the crop is less than the MSP) and the cost of which is only 10 per cent of farm loan waiver programme as per our estimates. Provision of A2 milk in Mid-day meals for children will create adequate additional income for 16 million farmer per year,” PTI quoted the report as saying.

Regarding investment revival, the report said capital subsidy in case of delayed projects equal to cost overrun may be provided. Cost overrun may be funded at concessional interest rate by the government in such cases.

Also, there is a “dire need” to publish monthly payroll report in India for formal sector as job creation is “grossly underreported”.

Other measures like providing support infrastructure and skilling and certifying workers need to be adopted, it added.
