Russian President in his speech addressing football fans across the world, said, “I welcome all guests to the legendary Moscow stadium Luzhniki, everyone gathered in the numerous fan zones of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and those watching us on television or online.

I congratulate you – the entire large, multinational, tightly-knit international football family – on the start of the top tournament on the planet!

This major sporting event is being held in Russia for the first time, and we are sincerely happy about it. In our country, football is not just the most popular sport. People genuinely love football. And it was love at first sight, from the first official match that took place in Russia in 1897.”

“We prepared responsibly for this major event and did our best so that fans, athletes and specialists could immerse themselves in the atmosphere of this magnificent football festival and, of course, enjoy their stay in Russia – open, hospitable, friendly Russia – and find new friends here, new like-minded people.

Consider this: without exaggeration, there are billions of people on the planet who are devoted football fans. And wherever we live, no matter our traditions, we all are united as one team by our love for this spectacular, dazzling, uncompromising game. And so all the members of this team understand each other well, they have a good sense of each other,” President Putin added.

Talking on the world’s unity, Putin said, “It is in this unity, which bends neither to differences in language, nor in ideology, nor in faith, that the great power of football, of sport in general, the power of its humanistic principles, lies. Our task is to preserve this power, this unity for future generations, for the sake of developing sport and strengthening peace and mutual understanding among peoples,” he added.

I wish success to all the teams, and unforgettable impressions to fans.

Welcome to Russia!

FIFA President Gianni Infantino at the opening ceremony said,

“Welcome to the World Cup!

Welcome to the FIFA World Cup here in Russia!

As of today, for one month, football will conquer Russia. And from Russia, football will conquer the entire world. Enjoy the biggest celebration on earth! Thank you, President Putin! Thank you, Moscow!”

Performances from British singer Robbie Williams and Russian operatic soprano Aida Garifullina were the highlights of the opening ceremony.

Meanwhile in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2018, Russia thrashed Saudi Arabia by 5-0.

Madras HC delivers split decision on disqualification of 18 AIADMK MLAs

Madras High Court’s two-Judge bench delivered a split verdict on petitions challenging the disqualification of 18 AIADMK MLAs loyal to sidelined leader TTV Dhinakaran. The MLAs were disqualified by the Tamil Nadu Speaker P Dhanapal on September 18, also a gazette notification was issued declaring that the vacancies to their seats have arisen due to the Anti-Defection Act.

TTV Dhinakaran, while questioning Chief Justice (CJ) Indira Banerjee’s decision said, “I appreciate the honourable judge who has clearly stated in the judgement that the speaker’s decision is wrong. I am reminding the Chief Justice that she had given a different kind of verdict in the context of Puducherry… Is the law different in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry? The people will support us… This is not at all a setback. It is a new experience legally.”

“What is sad about all this is the people’s disappointment that this anti-people government has been given an extension of two months. As a layman, I have my doubts,” TTV Dhinakaran said.

“The people will support us. This is not at all a setback. It is a new experience” he further said.

Updates:

The verdict is delivered by two judges CJ Banerjee and Justice M Sundar.

The verdict came out with the difference in the judgment.

Following the split decision matter will now be referred to a third judge and it will take two more months,  according to reports

In this situation, Status quo will be maintained that straight away means there will neither be bypolls in the 18 seats nor will a floor test be held till the matter is decided by the court.

India, China likely to form oil buyers club to cut OPEC’s dominance

Picture For Representation

India, China kicked off formal talks in Beijing on June 11 to forge a common front on oil. They were considering the formation of oil buyer’s club, a bloc against OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) to counter tough bargain offered by OPEC on oil prices.

India, China both together accounted for 17 % of world oil consumption.

Production cuts by OPEC have led to global oil prices hitting a four year high in May 2018 that forced a Rs 3.8 per liter hike in petrol and Rs 3.38 a liter hike in diesel prices.

“The timing is right. The boom in the US oil and gas production gives us leverage against OPEC,” an official said.

The move comes in the backdrop of shifting of global oil market’s centre to Asia and simultaneously working to get more US crude oil to Asia.

In April 2018, oil minister Dharmendra Pradhan proposed an alliance between Indian and Chinese state-run oil companies to cut dominance of OPEC. After meeting with Wang Yilin, China National Petroleum Corporation chairman and Li Fanrong deputy administrator of China’s National Energy Administration, Pradhan said, “As consumers, we have certain mutual interests. We agreed to promote (business-to-business) cooperation… and we are hopeful that in future buyers will be able to dictate prices.”

“Possibilities of joint sourcing of oil as well as combined bargaining to bring down Asian premium was discussed. The similar collaboration will be proposed to Japan and Korea as well. With CNPC or its affiliates selling in the overseas market a large portion of oil produced from fields it owns in third countries, India expressed interest in buying the Chinese firm’s equity oil directly,” the official said.

By 2023, oil demand will hit 104.7 million barrels per day, up 6.9 million bpd in 2017, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).

“As has been the case for some years, China and India together will contribute nearly 50% of global oil demand,” the IEA said in a report.

Assam lynching incident warns us of the perils of social media

In the era of virtual reality, how social media can be an unsolicited invitation to danger has been proved by the unfortunate incident of Assam lynching. The inevitable manifestation of its perilous power is visible in negativity, devouring individuals and society via means of fake news, hate messages, violence-inciting posts, explicit videos or graphics circulated by vested interests. Such content implicitly controls one’s mind. Sometimes, it can get you killed too. That’s what exactly happened in Assam when two music lovers went to explore nature in Karbi Anglong district and ended up being lynched in cold blood. Reason? A fake post on Sopadhora (child-lifters) doing the rounds on WhatsApp groups in that area.

Making it to the list of India’s lynching incidents, two young men- Nilutpal Das (29) and Abhijeet Nath(30) were beaten to death on June 8 in Karbi Anglong district by an inebriated mob who mistook them as child lifters, a rumour that was already doing rounds on WhatsApp groups. An illiterate mob which are not used to outsiders (plus the circulation of fake news on the intrusion of child lifters in that area) took no time to react on their suspicion and inhumanely beat the two young men until they succumbed. The mob didn’t wait to inform the police or hand over the boys to them. So far, the Assam Police have arrested 28 people in the lynching incident including the main accused, Alphajoz Timung, who instigated the mob. Also, 30 have been nabbed for circulating rumour on child-lifters on social media.

Nilotpal was an audio engineer and Abhijeet was a digital artist working at a Goa-based company. They were the natives of Guwahati. And, both of them are victims of ills of social media and the growing intolerance in our society that go hand-in-hand.

The lynching of Nilutpal and Abhijeet has caused a furore in Assam. The incident has incited anger amongst the people of Assam and India, drawing attention from national and international media and politicians. Condemning the incident, the agitated crowd took to the streets, and people have been carrying out peace marches in various places across the country. Nevertheless, it has also caused fear among some tribal communities, especially, young people from Karbi Anglong living in Guwahati for quality education and employment, who feel threatened by the incident, fearing what if they are targeted next for avenging the killing of the two men. Their worries are justified considering hate posts against their communities on Facebook and WhatsApp are already doing rounds which are proof enough for them to look for their own security.

The ruckus on social media doesn’t stop there. Since the incident took place, the social media has been flooded with hate messages against the people of Karbi Anglong, posts inciting violence and calling for attacks on some tribal communities of Assam with the video and graphics of the incident are disturbing in nature. Some perpetrators have used Facebook and WhatsApp for publishing posts urging people to “name-shame” or “teach a lesson” to communities involved in the incident.

Coming out together to restore peace in Assam and Karbi Anglong district and to ensure law and order is not disturbed, the student bodies — Hill State Demand Council (HSDC), Karbi Students Association (KSA), AJYCP Karbi Anglong District and All Assam Student Union (Diphu region), have circulated a letter requesting public not to project the incident in a communal light, and to avoid sharing messages on social media that attack communities and also discourage others from doing the same. Read the letter below

To,

The People of Assam,

Under the joint leadership of HSDC, KSA, AJYCP and AASU (Diphu region), a press conference was held on 10 June 2018 condemning the mob lynching of the two innocent youths Nilutpal Das and Abhijeet Nath. The unfortunate incident which happened on 8 June 2018 night was a very unfortunate incident and we highly condemn it. We offer our deepest condolences with the families of the deceased. We urge the police and administration to take immediate and strict action against the persons involved. People indulging and promoting mob lynching do not belong to any tribe/community/religion, hence, we would like to appeal to our brothers and sisters all over Assam to remain calm in such times and not promote or instigate violence. We are all one and should not differentiate amongst ourselves, also we would like to request our brothers and sisters to act as responsible citizens in such troubled times and not spread hatred via social media.

Thanking you,

Dr Mongve Rongpi, President, Hill State Demand Council (HSDC),

Simeon Rongphar, President, Karbi Students Association (KSA)

Jitu Phukan, President, AJYCP Karbi Anglong District and

Shyamanta Gogoi, President, All Assam Student Union, Diphu region.

Social media has penetrated deep into the pockets of our vast country, its potential and reach, therefore, remains its key power in influencing people. The unprecedented hate presently in the country is a result of a massive social media propaganda and misinformation that reaches crores of gullible youth every day. In such an environment, it is imperative for the government to introduce proper checks and balances to control such a powerful medium of communication. Social media has time and again been used by propagandists to further their agendas using a strategically targeted campaign to provoke passions and create a wrong narrative in the society to suit their purpose. There are inadequate laws and content regulation mechanisms in the country today which further complicate the situation and result in the guilty escaping unpunished.

It is safe to claim that a majority of social media users never care to cross-check a rumour, or information, whether it is an unsubstantiated matter or real; nor, is there a mechanism to regulate or filter the content that reaches us through WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, email, etc. Though social media has helped people to connect in real time, engage in discussions, access diverse information, nevertheless, the question of credibility of social media is starkly palpable.

Congress Wins Karnataka’s Jayanagar Assembly Seat

The Congress candidate Sowmya Reddy on June 13 won the election in Bengaluru’s Jayanagar constituency in Karnataka by defeating BJP’s B N Prahlad by 2,889 votes.
The Congress got 54,457 votes, while the BJP attained 51,568 votes.

The assembly polls were held on June 11 and 55 percent of polling was recorded in the Jayanagar Assembly constituency. After winning the Jayanagar seat the Congress party now has in total 80 seats in the assembly.

“At the end of 11th round of the total 16 rounds of counting, Sowmya was ahead with 43,476 votes over Prahlad, who received 30,746 votes,” the poll official said.

“I was a winner from Jayanagar four times previously and had shifted from the adjoining constituency to BTM Layout, as it includes my home area. Had I contested from the same constituency the previous two times, would have won from there. This time the party high command had given an opportunity to my daughter, I thank them. I had expected the victory margin to be a lot higher but I am not disappointed. It is a victory,” said state minister Ramalinga Reddy.

The election for the Jayanagar seat was delayed last month following the death of a candidate days before polls on May 12.

Ahead of elections, Janata Dal-Secular extended its support to coalition partner Congress by withdrawing its candidate on June 5.
