DMK Chief M Karunanidhi who was suffering from urinary tract infection passed away on Tuesday after battling for life for several days. Karunanidhi was under continuous observation at the Kauvery hospital in Chennai.
“With deep anguish, we announce the demise of our beloved Kalaignar Dr. M Karunanidhi on 07.08.2018 at 06.10 PM. Despite the best possible efforts by our team of doctors and nurses to resuscitate him, he failed to respond.”
“We profoundly mourn the loss of one of the tallest leaders of India and we share the grief of family members and fellow Tamilians worldwide,” said Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, Executive Director of Kauvery Hospital, Chennai in an official press release.
Karunanidhi, 94, was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of Kauvery Hospital on July 28.
PM Modi while extending condolences to the family tweeted, “I have had the opportunity of interacting with Karunanidhi Ji on several occasions. His understanding of policy and emphasis on social welfare stood out. Firmly committed to democratic ideals, his strong opposition to the Emergency will always be remembered.”
He also added that India and particularly Tamil Nadu will miss him immensely. May his soul rest in peace.

In wake of alarming rise of incidents of sexual abuse at shelter homes meant for girls in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur and Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria, Congress party president Rahul Gandhi on August 7 attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for remaining tightlipped on crime against women and children in the country. He said this while addressing at the ‘Mahila Adhikar Sammelan’ in Talkatora Stadium.
Launching a harsh attack on PM Modi, Rahul said, “The Prime Minister speaks on everything, but does not utter a word when crimes are committed against women in Uttar Pradesh and other Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ruled states. No action is taken against the accused if he is a member of their party.”
He added, “The PM doesn’t utter a word on the incidents of rape. What happened against women in these four years is something, which didn’t happen even in the last 70 years,”
While continuing his tirade against PM Modi and BJP Rahul said, “They talk a lot but Women’s Reservation Bill is long pending. Congress told them clearly that the entire party will stand by them the day they decide to pass it. But PM doesn’t say anything. They said ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’. Hamein nahi samajh aya beti kisse bachani thi.”
Rahul also talked about women empowerment and underlined that the Congress party was aiming to reserve representations to 50 percent in all spheres. He also urged all women in the country to come forward and contribute to the nation’s development.
He also raises concern over Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for its ideology on women empowerment and said that the ideology of BJP and RSS is that only the men will run this country and if it is anywhere that the women belong, it is at the back.
While summing up the address he added that the ideologies of RSS, BJP and PM Modi ravaged the country.
In a bid to promote value-based ancient Gurukul education system in the State, Haryana Chief Minister, Manohar Lal has announced that the State Government would provide land free of cost to those Gurukuls which would provide free education to the children. Besides, it would also assist in making all the necessary arrangements required to run such Gurukuls including the teachers.
The Haryana Chief Minister made this announcement while speaking as a Chief Guest in a programme on ‘Relevance of the Gurukul system in the present era’ organized by Panchnad Shodh Sansthan, Chandigarh on August 7. While underlining the significance of Gurukuls in providing education based on renunciation and dedication to the children, the Chief Minister said that instead of confining just to the 3R education that is reading, writing, and ‘arithmetic, the moral values, yoga, patriotism should be made a part of the education system for the overall development of children.
He said that as per the ancient system, it was the moral responsibility in our society to provide facilities of health and education to the people free of cost but ironically today, on one hand, the common man lacked ample resources to get these facilities, the resourceful or rich people spent immense wealth for such facilities. The Chief Minister said that the State Government has taken several steps for bringing about a qualitative change in the education system. A major chunk of the State budget is spent on providing free education to the children. Now, the State Government has also constituted a 21 members State Higher Education Council under the Chairmanship of Prof B.K. Kuthiala, to create an enabling environment for promoting academic excellence. He also advocated abolishing the no detention policy for class first to eighth in schools saying that the system has adversely affected the studying habit of students as they have no fear of failing in the examinations.
He said that Haryana has made its mark in various spheres world over. Earlier, the Gita Jayanti Samaroh was organized in Kurukshetra at a much smaller scale. The present State Government has been organizing Gita Jayanti Samaroh of international level. People from 25 countries have participated in the Samaroh during the last three years. He said that this year, programmes of Gita Jayanti Samaroh would also be organized in Mauritius and United Kingdom (UK). The invitation has been received from these countries in this regard, he added.
Earlier, speaking on this occasion, Director, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh Dr. Jagat Ram described Gurukul education as the best education system which aims at the overall development of children. Director, Panchnad Shodh Sansthan Prof B.K. Kuthiala said that the Panchnad Shodh Sansthan was set up in the year 1984-85 with an aim to maintain a sense of harmony in the society. He said that at present 32 Shodh Sansthan are functional in Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir where the intellectual wing of the Sansthan hold discussions on scores of social, cultural and political issues. Executive President of Panchnad Shodh Sansthan, Dr. Krishan Arya thrown light on the relevance of gurukul education in the society. He said that gurukul education is based on Guru-Shishya tradition. Main speaker of the programme, Mukul Kanitkar said that at present more than 4000 Gurukuls are functioning in the country. Laying special emphasis on the promotion of Sanskrit language, he said that the entire world is going to adopt Gurukul education in the next 15 years. Finland has already adopted Gurukul education two years ago under which instead of subject wise, topic wise education is imparted to the students.
Taking a cue from the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, the Himachal Pradesh Government has set the target of doubling the income of farmers by the year 2022 by augmenting irrigation facilities and launching new schemes like ‘Jal se Krishi ko bal’, Flow Irrigation Scheme’, and ‘Solar Irrigation Scheme’.
Under these schemes, Rs. 250, 150 and 200 crores have been sanctioned. Apart from this under Pradhan Mantri Krishi Irrigation Scheme, new units of 111 minor irrigation schemes have been set up and a sum of Rs. 338 crore has been sanctioned for it.
First installment of Rs. 49 crore in form of central assistance has already been received. Simultaneously, a budget of Rs. 277 crore has been made for the development of small irrigation schemes in the state. The State Government has already sent the proposal of Rs. 800 crore to Central Government to strengthen the irrigation facilities and to repair old irrigation and drinking water sources. In addition to this, Government has reduced the current tariff of electricity for irrigation from Rs. 1 per unit to 75 paisa per unit, which will facilitate lakhs of farmers of the state.
In view of increasing the income of farmers of the State, the Cabinet has approved the guidelines for the implementation of ‘Natural Farming-Khushal Kisan’ scheme. Under the scheme, the income of farmers will increase manifold through natural farming and a provision of Rs. 25 crores has been made for the implementation of this scheme. This scheme will give the new direction to natural agriculture and farmers will get encouraged to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers.
State Agriculture University will prepare the package of practices for implementation of this scheme. Himachal Pradesh being the only state where 89.96 percent of the population lives in rural areas, therefore the dependency on agriculture and horticulture is much higher as compared to other states. Here Agriculture is the main occupation of the people which plays an important role in strengthening the economy of the State.
There is a vast scope in agriculture and horticulture in the state, due to which 62 percent of states people get employment in the agriculture sector. It is the main source of income for people of State and about 10 percent domestic product of state comes from agriculture and related areas.
To boost up the agriculture sector and many other new schemes have been proposed so that people get maximum employment in this area and at the same time their income.
The State Government is making every possible effort to strengthen the economy with full commitment to double the income of farmers by 2022 as has been announced by the Prime Minister.
To provide new direction to the agriculture in the State the State Government has taken a decision to bring additional area under fruit and vegetable production in the State. Presently JICA Crop Diversification Scheme has been implemented in five districts of the State. Now, the second phase of this scheme will be implemented in all the districts at a cost of Rs. 1000 crore. Under ‘YS Parmar Kisan Swarojgar Yojna’, Poly-houses will be constructed for the promotion of safe farming in the State. The budget of Rs. 23 crore has been made for this during the year 2018-19. For the protection of farmer’s crop from monkeys, wild animals, and stray cattles, a provision of 35 crores has been made. Under ‘Chief Minister’s Farm Protection Scheme’, farmers will be given 85 percent subsidy for solar fencing.
Apart from this, the State government is trying to double the income of the farmers by expanding activities in various sectors of agriculture such as flower cultivation, bee-keeping, fisheries and dairy production.
Mechanization of agriculture due to the shortage of manpower is the demand of time. Many farmers are unable to purchase farming equipments such as tractor, power wielder, power tiller due to its higher prices. For this, Government will set up ‘Agriculture Facilitation Centers’ and farmers will be able to get the necessary expensive equipment on rent. To establish these centers, the government will provide 40 percent subsidy on instruments costing up to 25 lakh to the farmers and youth entrepreneurs. To provide equipments like tillers, potter, weaver, a provision of Rs. 32 crore has been made by the government.
Under the measure to reduce the cost of production, for balanced utilization of nutrients in the year 2018-19 all the farmers will be brought under soil health card scheme. For the establishment of pesticide plant provision of 50 percent investment subsidy has been made.
Recently 13 research centers and eight science centers have been made functional to provide advanced and latest information on agriculture and horticulture to farmers. Connecting to the farmers through the WhatsApp application the Government has taken this positive initiative. This has led to the quick solution to the farmers. To redress the grievances of farmers on priority basis, agriculture departments tall free helpline number ‘1550’ has been made functional.
The UN’s environment chief hailed India’ efforts to meet its energy needs through solar energy and curb use of plastics but said that nations still need to do more to save the planet.
Erik Solheim, Executive Director UN Environment Programme (UNEP) said, the year 2017 is “the first year in human history” when more electricity was generated globally from the sun, in comparison to oil, gas, and coal combined.
While hailing India’s efforts during an interview with UN News, UNEP chief said that some of India’s southern states were experiencing “the most rapid economic development anywhere in the world based on solar energy.”
The Cochin International Airport in Kerala is the first ever fully solar-powered airport. Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL), the company which owns and operates the airport, became power neutral in August 2015 with the commissioning of its 12Mw peak solar power plant.
According to information retrieved from CIAL website, the company has scaled up the installed capacity to 30 MWp by April 2018 and by September this year, the solar capacity at CIAL is expected to be increased to 40 MWp, with a power potential of 60 million units per annum.
He also added that “Rwanda, Botswana, and African nations are also doing very, very well” with wildlife protection efforts, but still, it is not adding up to being sufficient for the planet. We need to do a lot more”.
Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh on August 7 said that over 1.11 crore farmers across India have registered on central government’s e-NAM platform (e-National Agriculture Market Platform), which enhances transparency between the farmer and the market and also promotes better marketing opportunities for farmers to sell their products online.
After registering on the platform farmer needs to transparently go to the market without having any involvement of a third party.
Minister Singh while addressing in the Lok Sabha said that farmers wishing to join e-NAM platform need to register themselves on e-NAM portal and can sell their produce on e-NAM platform in any e-NAM mandi of their own choice.
He added, “e-NAM platform promotes better marketing opportunities for farmers to sell their produce through online, competitive and transparent price discovery system and online payment facility.
The minister further added that a total of 585 ‘mandis’ have been integrated till March 31, 2018, on e-NAM platform. Mandis are on-board to the e-NAM platform based on proposals received from respective states with an appropriate detailed project report.
Justice Indira Banerjee, Justice Vineet Saran and Justice K.M. Joseph were sworn in as Supreme Court judges on Tuesday. Chief Justice Dipak Misra administered the oath to the three judges in his courtroom.
Justice Banerjee first took the oath, followed by Justice Saran and Justice Joseph.
Despite objections elevated by the judges including members of the collegium comprising Justices M B Lokur, Kurian Joseph and A K Sikri on the seniority issue concerning Justice K M Joseph. There was no change in the seniority of the judges as determined by the warrant of appointment signed by the President last week.
With the appointment of the three judges, the Supreme Court’s total strength of the judges has gone up to 25 against the authorized strength of 31.

Four army men, including an Army major and three soldiers, and two suspected militants were killed on August 7 in an encounter along the Line of Control (LOC) in Gurez, north Kashmir’s Bandipora District while foiling an infiltration bid.
An army officer said that army men of 36 RR intercepted a group of infiltrators near Bakhtor area of Gurez along LOC and the forces challenged the movement of infiltrators and they opened gunfire.
An unidentified Army officer revealed that Major KP Rane, soldiers Jamie Singh, Vikramjeet and Mandeep were killed in the gunfire.
Senior Superintendent of Police of Bandipora, Zulfikar Ahmad, reportedly said that the firing started around 1 am.
The army officer, however, said that bodies of the two militants who were also killed in the incident are yet to be recovered.
Bombay High Court on Tuesday rejected the parole application filed by Abu Salem to get married.
Abu Salem, 1993 Mumbai blast convict had approached the Bombay High Court seeking 45-day parole to marry Mumbra resident Kausar Bahar.
