Triple Talaq Bill not to be tabled in this Rajya Sabha Session due to lack of consensus

Rajya Sabha (RS) Chairman Venkaiah Naidu on August 10 said that the Muslim Women Protection of Rights on Marriage Bill (Triple Talaq bill) will not be tabled in the Rajya Sabha this monsoon session due to lack of consensus between government and opposition. Senior officials who spoke on condition of anonymity said that the amendments made in the bill notwithstanding, giving instant triple talaq or ‘talaq-e-biddat’ will continue to be illegal and void, and will attract a jail term of three years.

“The provision has been added to allow the magistrate to grant bail after hearing the wife,” said Union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad during a press briefing.

This was one of the demands of the Opposition.
