At least Eleven family members of several policemen have been kidnapped on Thursday evening after terrorists raided the homes of police officers in south Kashmir.

Police sources say the kidnappings are pressure tactics by the terrorists, after the arrest of Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin’s son in a terror funding case. Earlier the security forces conducted multiple raids and arrested relatives of some terrorists in the area.

On Wednesday, a policeman’s son was kidnapped from Tral. A distressed family had appealed to the kidnappers to release their son.

A policeman was kidnapped on Thursday, from his home in Pulwama district and released after he was questioned and thrashed.

Terrorists barged into the homes of the policemen and kidnapped their family members in Anantnag, Pulwama and Kulgam districts. Among those abducted includes the brother of a policeman posted in Srinagar and the son of another policeman who works at police training centre as a cook.

Police added that they are working to ensure the safety and release of the policemen’s family members.

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah reacted on the situation in the valley. “11 abductions! This is a very worrying reflection of the situation in the valley. Rahul Gandhi targets PM Modi on demonetisation, Rafale deal, BJP hits back

Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of deliberately implementing demonetization to help his capitalist friends.

Rahul Gandhi in his press conference said, “The objective of Demonetisation was very clear. It was to help PM Modi’s friends. Demonetisation was not a mistake, it was a deliberate move.”

Giving a reference of the RBI report which stated that 99.30 percent of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 notes banned by PM Modi during demonetisation have returned to the banking system. Rahul Said, “The RBI annual report proves that all his objectives failed. PM Narendra Modi must answer to the people of this country why this decision was taken and wrecked the economy, something no PM did in the last 70 years.”

“I want to state the real reason of Demonetisation to everyone. PM Modi’s 10-15 capitalist friends were defaulters. He helped them to turn their black money into white,” Rahul added.

Accusing Amit Shah of depositing huge amount at the time of demonetisation, Rahul Said, “We have seen in the case of Gujarat’s Cooperative Banks, of which Amit Shah is a Director, where Rs. 700Cr worth of money was deposited.”

Further attacking PM Modi and again putting a question on Rafale deal, Rahul said, “There are clear facts in Rafale case. Anil Ambani has ₹45000Cr debt. He formed the company 10 days before the deal. What is the deal between Anil Ambani and PM Modi?”

Asking for the creation of a Joint Parliamentary Committee, Rahul said, “I have no problem in creating a Joint Parliamentary Committee, where all facts can be disclosed.”

Hitting back at Rahul Gandhi, BJP National Spokesperson Sambit Patra said, that Rahul Gandhi is criticizing demonetisation only because Congress was adversely affected by the currency ban. Sambit accused Gandhi family of looting the public money and said that the reason Congress is creating an issue out if it, because their looted money have now become worthless.

Kerala CM adamant on accepting foreign aid for rehabilitation

Kerala Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan today made it clear that his government would be too keen to accept foreign aid to rehabilitate and reconstruct the state now in ruins after heavy floods.

The United Arab Emirates had made a clear offer to send aid for Kerala flood victims and for reconstruction in the State after the devastation caused by massive floods. However, Centre said a clear no, leading to resentment amongst people in Kerala.

Kerala CM’s statement assumes significance in the wake of a row over the Centre’s refusal to accept the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) reported offer of Rs 700 crore to the flood-hit state. He has gone to the extent of seeking legal remedies to get foreign aid as State was in dire need of it despite spirited people pouring in relief.

Addressing a specially convened one-day session of the state assembly to discuss the unprecedented flood situation, Vijayan said 483 people have lost lives in the state since the onset of monsoon on May 28 and 14 were still missing.  He said the state’s economy had been badly hit and the loss could be much more than the state’s annual plan outlay for the year which stood at Rs 37,247.99 crore.

Rs 600 crore sanctioned by the Centre, the state was hoping to get more financial assistance from the Union government considering the gravity of the situation, the chief minister said.

“The Chief Minister’s distress relief fund has received Rs 730 crore till yesterday,” he said, adding that the government had also been offered land and jewels towards relief fund.  On the discussions held with World Bank officials as part of fund mobilization for rebuilding the state, Vijayan said the government policy was to accept funds from any quarters if it was in tune with the state’s interests.

Rupee at its lifetime low as it touches 70.82 mark

It is a free fall for the rupee as today it weakened by another 23 paise against the dollar to trade at a lifetime low of 70.82 on strong month-end demand for the US currency amid sustained foreign fund outflows.  This seems ironic because India has completed its 71 years of independence and rupee is inching towards that mark.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market, the local currency opened a tad higher at 70.57 a dollar from its previous close of 70.59 but slipped to hit a fresh low of 70.82, down by 23 paise.

Forex dealers said besides strong month-end demand for the American currency, buying by importers, mainly oil refiners in view of surging crude oil prices and capital outflows, weighed on the domestic currency.  Significantly,  the dollar strengthened against its rival currencies overseas too put pressure on the rupee, they said.

The rupee had recorded a steep fall of 49 paise, to close at record low of 70.59 against the dollar in the previous session. The free fall of rupee is going to have it’s after effects on imports and exports and on the sensitive index or Sensex which is rated as a barometer of the economy.
