Kerala: Bishop Franco Mulakkal arrested after Third day of Questioning

Franco Mulakkal, the Catholic priest accused of raping a nun, was arrested on Friday after the third straight day of questioning by the police.

The investigating officer in the nun rape case, Kottayam Superintendent of Police Hari Sankar told journalists, “On basis of the evidence collected so far we found that the bishop has committed the crime. He was taken for a medical examination after his arrest and subsequent investigation will continue and he’ll be produced before a magistrate court.”

The Kottayam SP said, “We cannot disclose the evidences at this stage because the matter is under investigation and it has to go through a trial process, but we reached a reasonable conclusion that there is evidence in this case and we have decided to arrest him.”

Senior Kerala Minister E P Jayarajan told reporters in Thiruvananthapuram that “Investigation is going in the right direction and the government has full support with the nuns staging the protest. Definitely, the government will take all necessary steps to identify the culprits.”

Franco Mulakkal on Thursday was divested of his pastoral responsibilities as the bishop of the Jalandhar diocese of the Missionaries of Jesus by the Vatican.

The senior Catholic priest was accused of raping the nun between 2014 and 2016. He however, denied the allegations of repeatedly raping and sexually assaulting a nun of his own congregation.

PM Modi to visit Odisha, Chhattisgarh on Sept 22 to launch several projects

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Odisha and poll-bound Chhattisgarh on September 22 and will launch several projects in the states, his office has said.

PM Modi during his one day visit to Odisha is slated to launch a slew of projects, including a fertilizer plant at Talcher and inauguration of a new airport in Jharsugada.

Statement said, in addition to fertilizer, the plant will produce natural gas, which will contribute to the country’s energy requirements.

The inauguration of the airport in Jharsugada will bring western Odisha on the country’s aviation map, and facilitate regional air connectivity through the government’s UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) scheme.

During his visit PM will also dedicate the Garjanbahal coal mines and the Jharsuguda-Barapali-Sardega rail link to the nation. He will also unveil a plaque to mark the commencement of coal production and transportation from Dulanga coal mines.

PM Modi will then arrive in Chhattisgarh’s Janjgir-Champa District and will visit an exhibition on traditional handloom and agriculture. He will lay the foundation stone for national highway projects and the Pendra-Anuppur third railway line in the state.

The statement reveals he will also address a gathering in Chhattisgarh.

India calls off meeting with Pakistan at UNGA

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on September 21 said that India called off a meeting between External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj with her Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi that was to be held in New York on the sidelines of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

India on September 20 accepted Pakistan’s proposal for Foreign Ministers’ meet on the sidelines of the UNGA session in New York. India accepted the proposal sent in written by Pakistan’s newly-elected Prime Minister Imran Khan to PM Narendra Modi seeking resumption of talks.

MEA press release says, “Since yesterday’s announcement of a meeting between the Foreign Ministers of India and Pakistan in New York later this month, two deeply disturbing developments have taken place. The latest brutal killings of our security personnel by Pakistan-based entities and the recent release of a series of 20 postage stamps by Pakistan glorifying a terrorist and terrorism confirm that Pakistan will not mend its ways.”

MEA Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar added, “Any conversation with Pakistan in such an environment would be meaningless. In view of the changed situation, there will be no meeting between the Foreign Ministers of India and Pakistan in New York.”

UNDP report: 270 million people in India moved out of poverty in10 years

UN report on Global poverty revealed that over 270 million people in India moved out of poverty from year 2005-06 to 2015-16. The figures shows reduction in the poverty rate in the country nearly halved over the 10-year period.

The 2018 global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHDI) said that about 1.3 billion people live in multidimensional poverty globally.

“Although the level of poverty – particularly in children – is staggering so is the progress that can be made in tackling it. In India alone some 271 million have escaped multidimensional poverty in just ten years,” UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner said.

The Index noted that in India 271 million people moved out of poverty between 2005/06 and 2015/16. The poverty rate in the country has nearly halved, falling from 55 per cent to 28 per cent in 10 years.

According to the data compiled by the UN, the several sections that observed the growth were Dalits, ST and Muslims.

OPHDI Director Sabina Alkire, said that even though ST still remains to be the poorest section, they have witnessed a reduction in MPI.

She added that India is the only country for which progress over time has been estimated this time.

Multidimensional poverty constitutes of several factors, including the income, living standards, education, health and several other factors.

Unidentified robbers kill Two Security guards of PNB in Noida

Two private security guards of a bank were allegedly killed by unidentified robbers in a loot attempt in Noida city.

The incident took place on the Friday morning when the guards were on duty at the Punjab National Bank’s Circle Office branch in Sector 1, police said.

According to the sources, the robbers attacked security guards with sharp objects, which led to their death.

As per the reports, no robbery was reported although the crime appeared to be a robbery attempt at the bank.

The deceased have been identified as Mudrika Prasad and Mukesh.

The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post mortem.

An investigation is going on to identify the culprits.

UGC asks Universities to celebrate September 29 as ‘Surgical Strike Day’

University Grants Commission (UGC) issued a circular requesting all higher educational institutions (HEI), universities and colleges to celebrate Surgical Strike Day on September 29.

UGC Secretary Rajnish Jain, has written circular to the Vice Chancellors of all universities, has instructed that colleges may organize special parades, speeches by ex-servicemen about the sacrifices made by the Armed Forces, exhibitions, writing letters and making cards by students to pledge their support for the Armed Forces, etc to mark the day.

UGC circular reads, “All HEIs with National Cadet Corps (NCC) units shall organize a special parade on 29th September, after which the NCC commander shall address them on the modalities of protection of the borders. The Universities/colleges may organize a meeting, calling ex-service men who will sensitise the students about the sacrifice made by the armed forces in protecting the borders.”

The UGC circular further says, “On the occasion, the student shall pledge their support for the armed forces by writing letter and cards, which may be produced in both physical and digital format. These letters and cards will be shared with Public Relation Officer, Defence and Press Information Bureau for publicity across various media, including social media.”

While disagreeing with the idea historian Aditya Mukherjee of JNU, reportedly said, “This is typically the BJP trying to project themselves as the nationalists. They have this great deficit of not being part of the national movement. Now they are trying to force it on people and militarize campuses.”

“We are not anti-army. But they want to push us through a nationalism test. Forcing people to prove their nationalism is no way to arouse nationalism,” Mukherjee added.

Jammu and Kashmir: Policemen announce their resignation on social media after three killings by militants

At least five Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) policemen including SPOs and constables on Friday have announced their resignations on social media after the abduction and killing of three of their colleagues by militants.

Policemen have announced their resignations through videos which went viral on social networking sites.

In the videos the policemen are heard saying that they have resigned from their posts and have nothing to do with police from now onwards.

Sources says, the resignation number might increase due to the terror created by the militant group Hizbul Mujahideen.

On Friday morning three policemen were abducted and killed by terrorists in Shopian district of J&K.

Former CM of J&K Mehbooba Mufti condemned the killings and said, “Three more policemen have lost their lives to militant bullets. Outrage, shock & condemnation will be expressed by all of us on expected lines. Unfortunately, it brings no solace to the families of the victims.”

The militant group Hizbul Mujahideen via video had earlier warned security personnel in J&K to resign from their posts within next four days.

Vietnam President Tran Dai Quang dies after serious illness

Vietnam’s President Tran Dai Quang died on Friday after prolonged and serious illness.

According to the reports, the 61-year-old died at 10:05 am (local time) in the military hospital in Hanoi.

Quang had been in power since April 2016, after being nominated by his predecessor Truong Tan Sang and elected to the post by the National Assembly of Vietnam. Before that he had served as Vietnam’s Minister of Public Security, an organization with broad powers, including intelligence gathering and thwarting domestic and foreign threats.

Tran Dai Quang was originally from a small farming community 115 km (70 miles) south of Hanoi.

Tanzania Ferry Capsizes, Kills 44 people

At least 44 people were killed on Thursday when a passenger ferry carrying hundreds capsized in Tanzania’s Lake Victoria.

The accident occurred between two islands in Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa, which straddles the borders of Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya, reports said.

Sources says, the exact number of those on board wasn’t immediately known as the ferry was overloaded.

The death toll is expected to rise as rescue operations are underway.

As per the reports, 37 people were rescued on Thursday night by rescue teams, the rescue operation was halted because of poor visibility.

In 2011, Approximately 200 people were killed after an overloaded vessel hit strong winds off the island of Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean.

Five people Shot, including Eight year old girl at Syracuse, New York

At least five people were shot, including an eight-year-old girl on Thursday in Syracuse, New York, the city’s police chief said.

As per the reports, police responded to a shooting in the city in upstate New York shortly after 9 p.m. local time, the department said in a statement posted on Twitter by a producer for National Public Radio.

“This is very tragic event,” Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler said during a news conference. “This is something that cannot occur in our community.”

However, Fowler did not disclose the condition of the five wounded people.

According to the reports, the shooting took place at a family gathering to remember a person who died of cancer.

Sources says, the ambulances were seen driving away from the scene with a police escort at about 9:15 p.m.
