‘Leaders are not those who lead masses in arson, violence’: Army Chief General Bipin Rawat

Army chief Bipin Rawat on Thursday criticized the violence during anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) rallies across the country, saying ‘leaders are not those who lead masses in arson and violence’.

Speaking at an event in Delhi, Rawat said, “Leaders are those who lead people in the right direction, not those leaders who lead people in inappropriate directions. As we are witnessing in a large number of university and colleges students, the way they are leading masses of crowds to carry out arson and violence in cities and towns. This is not leadership.”

His comments came at a time when enormous protests have rocked university campuses across the country.

Army Chief’s comments were criticized by opposition parties like the Congress, with Congress leader Digvijaya Singh said on twitter, ” I agree General Saheb but also Leaders are not those who allow their followers to indulge in Genocide of Communal Violence. Do you agree with me General Saheb?”

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi also hit out at General Rawat by saying, “Leadership is knowing the limits of one’s office. It is about understanding the idea of civilian supremacy & preserving the integrity of the institution that you head.”
