Srinagar: State government has placed Hurriyat M chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest ahead of the visit of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the state on Sunday.
“Ahead of @narendramodi visit, panic buttons pressed by the authoritarian state and control tightened as searches and CASO conducted even in Lal Chowk! Today morning I was put under #HouseArrest!” Mirwaiz posted on Twitter.
Security has been beefed up in the state in view of the Prime Minister’s visit. Police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed in strength around the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre, the venue for Modi’s engagements in the valley.
Police has also set up mobile checkpoints at dozens of places within the city and at all entry points to Srinagar.
Separatist groups have called for shutdown on the day.
“The five years of Modi rule are marred with tyranny and oppression in Kashmir,” a statement issued by Joint Resistance Leadership said. “Modi’s arrival cannot be an occasion of joy for us but deserves our strong protest and resentment”.
