The Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express will soon get a new stoppage at Anantnag railway station, a move expected to improve rail connectivity in South Kashmir and benefit commuters, tourists and traders.
The decision was taken during a meeting between Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, where ongoing railway projects and future initiatives for the Union Territory were reviewed.
According to Northern Railway, a commercial stoppage for the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express will be introduced at Anantnag station. In a statement, Northern Railway said, “This strategic halt will significantly benefit commuters, tourists, and traders, providing a faster and more reliable transport link to one of Kashmir’s most prominent economic and cultural hubs.”
Vaishnaw said the decision to introduce a stoppage for the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express at Anantnag will address local aspirations and serve the needs of the people.
Abdullah said the Vande Bharat service has transformed travel between Jammu and Srinagar by significantly reducing journey time and providing world-class comfort to both residents and tourists.
The Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 6, 2025, between Srinagar and Katra. At present, two Vande Bharat trains, operating as four services, run in the Kashmir Valley.
In April, the Ministry of Railways increased the number of coaches in each Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express from 16 to 20 following a rise in passenger demand. The service was also extended from Katra to Jammu Tawi railway station.
The train currently stops at four stations en route — Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Reasi and Banihal. It covers the 269-km journey between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar in about four hours and 45 minutes.
