Government approves decision to ban e-cigarettes: Nirmala Sitharaman

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday announced that the Union Cabinet has approved the decision to ban e-cigarettes.

“Today the Union Cabinet has approved the Promulgation of the prohibition of electronic cigarettes (production, manufacture, import, export, transport, sale, distribution, storage and advertisement) Ordinance, 2019,” said Sitharaman.

The minister made the announcement at a press conference after the Cabinet meet.

Sitharaman said the Cabinet decided to ban e-cigarettes as they pose health risk to people, especially the youth.

E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that produce aerosol by heating a solution containing nicotine, which is the addictive substance in combustible cigarettes.
