World Social Media Day 2026: Celebrating the Digital Revolution

New Delhi, June 30. World Social Media Day is being observed across the globe on Tuesday to celebrate the transformative role social media has played in connecting people, businesses and communities. The day recognizes the impact of digital platforms on communication, information sharing and social interaction in the modern era. World Social Media Day is observed annually on June 30 and was first launched by technology website Mashable in 2010.

Over the past two decades, social media platforms have revolutionised the way people communicate, consume news, conduct business and express their opinions. From connecting families and friends across continents to enabling real-time dissemination of information, social media has become an integral part of everyday life.

According to global estimates, more than five billion people worldwide now use social media platforms, making them one of the most influential tools of the digital age. Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube and WhatsApp have not only transformed communication but have also created new opportunities for businesses, content creators and entrepreneurs.

Experts, however, stress the importance of using social media responsibly. While these platforms have empowered individuals and amplified voices, concerns regarding misinformation, online abuse, privacy and mental health continue to remain major challenges in the digital ecosystem.

As the world celebrates Social Media Day, users are being encouraged to promote positive online engagement, verify information before sharing and maintain a healthy balance between their digital and offline lives.
