With 2,36,657 COVID-19 cases, India overtakes Italy to become 6th worst-hit country

With 2,36,657 COVID-19 cases, India has now overtaken Italy to become the sixth worst affected country worldwide, while the number of deaths rose to 6,642, according to data provided by the union health ministry.

There are 1,15,942 active cases while 1,14,072 have been cured/discharged, health ministry said.

Maharashtra remains the worst affected state in the country. The total number of COVID-19 cases has jumped to 80,229 with 2,849 fatalities.

Tamil Nadu continues to be the second-worst hit state with 28,694 Covid-19 cases and 232 deaths, followed by Delhi with 26,334 cases and 708 deaths, Gujarat – 19,094 cases and 1,190 fatalities.

A total of 45,24,317 samples have been tested as on June 6, of which 1,37,938 samples have been tested in last 24 hours, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said.
