The Official Outing
Jodie Foster
has been acting for 47 years, since the age of three. She clearly knows a thing or two about protecting privacy in the public eye. In a masterful acceptance speech at the Golden Globes, Foster teased the audience about revealing a big secret, before finally saying what most of Hollywood had long known; she had come out years ago, when “a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends and family”. “But now, apparently,” she added, “I’m told that every celebrity is expected to honour the details of their private life with a press conference, a fragrance and a prime-time reality show.”

PI’S Original Lullaby
Oscar season is upon us, and like most years in the post-Slumdog Millionaire world,Indiahas another nomination to celebrate. Relatives of 18th century Malayalam poet Irayimman Thampi are claiming that the song is lifted from his lullaby Omanathinkal Kidavo. Comparing English translations of the two songs does suggest slight ‘inspiration’.

The Dark Side Costs
Star Wars fans were left disappointed this week as White House officials rejected a petition asking them to dedicate resources towards constructing a Death Star by 2016. The popular petition had collected 34,000 signatures online. However, Paul Shawcross, the head of the Science and Space Branch at the Office of Management and Budget, citing a Lehigh University study that estimated the cost of such an exercise at $852 quadrillion, said, “We’re working hard to reduce the deficit, not expand it.”
