Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday announced that electricity usage up to 200 units will be free in Delhi from today, and power consumed between 201-400 units will be at half price as the Delhi government will provide 50 per cent subsidy, he added.
“Electricity bills in Delhi are now the lowest in the country for 200 units as well as 400 units consumption. Delhi is the only state to provide Lifeline Electricity to citizens,” AAP said in a tweet.
“If a household uses more than 200 units, then existing rates will apply. This will encourage people to consumer less power and conserve energy. Between 201-400, the existing ‘Half Bill’ introduced in 2015 will continue,” AAP added.
AAP further said, “Since independence, VIPs – politicians and officers have been provided free electricity and water from taxpayers’ money. Now the aam aadmi (common man) will also get basic services free, as a matter of right.”
Deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia in a tweet said, “Historic day for Delhi! CM @ArvindKejriwal declares Free Lifeline Electricity of 200 units to all Every family deserves a life of dignity. Just like good education & healthcare, a basic quantum of electricity to run lights/fans at home is essential for that.”
On Wednesday, Kejriwal said there has been no hike in electricity tariffs in Delhi for the fifth consecutive year and that the national capital has the lowest power tariffs in the country and the only place with 24×7 electricity.
“Congratulations Delhi For fifth consecutive year NO electricity tariff hike. On the contrary, for fifth consecutive yr, tariffs reduced. Delhi has lowest electricity tariffs in the country now And Del is the only place in India wid 24×7 electricity,” Kejriwal had tweeted.
