A close aide of BJP leader Smriti Irani was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi district, police said on Sunday.
Surendra Singh, a former head of Baraulia village, was killed on late Saturday night at his residence.
He was referred to Lucknow in a serious condition and later succumbed to his injuries, while he was getting treated, a police officer said.
The incident occurred just days after Smriti Irani won the Lok Sabha elections from the Amethi parliamentary constituency.
The police have registered a case and investigation is underway to nab the culprits.
According to the sources, Singh had been working very closely with Irani for the past couple of years.
Amethi is considered a stronghold of the Congress party since years. But in the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, the Congress suffered a defeat with Rahul Gandhi losing to BJP’s Smriti Irani by 55,120 votes.
