Self-Styled Godman Rampal convicted in two murder cases

Self-styled godman Rampal on Thursday was found guilty by a court in two separate murder cases.

Rampal was convicted on the charges of murder in a 2006 case related to the death of a woman supporter at the Satlok Ashram.

In another case Rampal and 27 of his followers were convicted on the charges of murder in 2014, that dealt with the deaths of four women and a child.

In both the cases, Rampal was charged under section 302 and 120(B) of Indian Penal Code

The quantum of punishment will be announced on October 16 and 17.

A special court was set up inside Hisar’s Central Jail to pronounce the judgment via video conference.

Rampal was arrested in November 2014 after thousands of security personnel laid siege to the Satlok Ashram in Hisar. The followers of Rampal had resisted the previous attempts by police to arrest him.

However, the Hisar court in August 2017 had acquitted Rampal in two cases of wrongful confinement and disobedience to order given by a public servant.

Rampal was born in September 1951 in Dhanana, a village in the Gohana tehsil of Sonepat district. He worked as an engineer in the Government of Haryana’s irrigation department.
