New Delhi: Security has been significantly tightened in and around Jantar Mantar ahead of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal’s scheduled visit to meet activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike. Delhi Police deployed additional personnel and paramilitary forces around the protest site as a precautionary measure.
According to police sources, barricades have been strengthened and security arrangements enhanced to manage the expected crowd during Kejriwal’s visit. Officials said the measures are aimed at maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of protesters, visitors and political leaders.
Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike has drawn increasing public and political attention in recent days. Several opposition leaders, public figures and civil society members have expressed solidarity with the activist, while concerns have also grown over his health as the fast continues. Sources also indicate that farmer leader Rakesh Tikait is likely to visit the protest site today to meet Wangchuk and extend his support.
Meanwhile, supporters associated with the ongoing protest have announced further demonstrations, including a proposed march towards Parliament, as they continue to press for their demands. The Delhi High Court is also scheduled to hear a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) concerning Wangchuk’s deteriorating health.
Arvind Kejriwal is expected to meet Wangchuk at the protest site later in the day and express support for his ongoing agitation. Police officials said security arrangements will remain in place until the visit concludes.
