The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the names of two justices to the government for elevation to the Supreme Court- Justice B R Gavai and Justice Surya Kant.
Justice Gavai is currently a judge of the Bombay High Court and Justice Kant is the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.
The collegium includes Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, Justice SA Bobde, Justice NV Ramana, Justice Arun Mishra and Justice RF Nariman.
The five-member Collegium on Wednesday recommended these two names for their elevation as Supreme Court judges.
The Centre had sent back the Supreme Court collegium’s recommendation to elevate Justices Aniruddha Bose and AS Bopanna, asking the body to reconsider its decision.
Aniruddha Bose is the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court and AS Bopanna is Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court.
“Both the judges have been recommended after taking into consideration the seniority criterion as well as their competence, conduct and integrity,” the Collegium said.
“Justice Gavai’s elevation has been recommended also keeping in view SC/ST representation at the Supreme Court,” the collegium added, “On his appointment, the Supreme Court Bench will have a Judge belonging to Scheduled Caste category after about a decade.”
