‘Rich and powerful can’t run this court’: Top Court on conspiracy against CJI

The Supreme court on Thursday, at hearing on conspiracy against Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said that there was a systematic attack on the institution. The Bench asserted that the rich and powerful cannot run the Court.

“Don’t play with fire. We want to send a message to the people of this country, the rich and powerful that they cannot control or run this court,” the bench said.

The apex court’s remarks came during a hearing on the affidavit by a lawyer claiming there was a conspiracy behind framing the CJI in a sexual harassment case.

A special bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra expressed anguish over the way the institution was being treated over the last three-four years.

“The way the institution is being treated in last few years, it is going to die,” a bench also comprising Justices R F Nariman and Deepak Gupta said.

On Wednesday, the three-judge bench of the top Court had asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the Delhi Police to look into the documents submitted by Bains in a sealed cover.
