Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday appealed to people, leaders and party workers to help the migrants trying to reach their homes.
He urged people to help the migrants by offering food and shelter as they are moving on foot to their homes.
“Today, hundreds of our brothers and sisters, along with their hungry and thirsty families have to head to homes in their villages on foot. Please help them, those of you can by offering them food, shelter and water,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted.
“A special appeal to Congress workers and leaders,” he added.
After PM Modi announced a nationwide lockdown due to COVID-19, several migrants have been marching to their homes in villages, covering a journey of hundreds of kilometres on foot.
Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’ Brien in a tweet said, “A drop in the ocean… Migrant workers badly hit. 40 from Bengal stranded in Chennai contacted us.We reached out to @mkstalin His team met & are taking care. Rahul Gandhi had earlier said, “The lockdown will devastate our poor & weak. It will deliver a heavy blow to the India we love. India isn’t black & white. Our decisions have to be carefully thought through. A more nuanced & compassionate approach is required to deal with this crisis. It’s still not too late.”
