Yasin Malik, chief of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front was detained on June 21 while Hurriyat Conference Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was placed under house arrest in order to prevent the separatists from leading protests in Kashmir valley, police said.
The separatists under the banner of Joint Resistance Leadership (an amalgamation of separatist groups) have given a protest shutdown call on June 20 for today against the murder of senior journalist Shujaat Bukhari and civilian killings in the Kashmir Valley.
“Joint Resistance Leadership has called for a complete strike on Thursday against the continued civilian killings in the valley, which has witnessed a sudden spike since the eve of Eid as three young boys have been brutally gunned down by the Indian forces while the fourth is struggling for life at SKIMS,” the statement said.
Yasin Malik was taken into custody from his Maisuma residence in Srinagar and has been lodged in police station Kothibagh. Whereas Farooq was placed under house arrest at his Nigeen residence, a police official said.
However, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, chairman of All Parties Hurriyat Conference, continued to remain under house detention.
