Indian eves in last eight in Hockey World Cup after 40 years

Indian Women Hockey team has created history by reaching the quarterfinals of 14th Vitality Women Hockey World Cup at London after 40 years. In a crossover match played on Tuesday night, Indian eves stunned Italy 3-0 to meet Ireland in quarterfinals. A reverse flick goal by teenager Lalremsiami in the 9th minute put India ahead. The lead was consolidated in the fag end of the third quarter by an opportunistic goal by Neha Goyal who drags the ball from beneath Italy’s goalkeeper after a melee in front of Italian goal. Umpire had to watch TV replay to award the goal in India’s favor. The last Indian goal came from the stick of experienced campaigner Vandana Katariya who deflected a penalty corner hit into the net in 55th minute.

India last played quarterfinals in 1978 and ultimately finished seventh.    

Police, DCW rescue 39 girls trafficked from Nepal in New Delhi’s Paharganj area

In a joint operation by Delhi Police and Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) 39 girls were rescued, who was trafficked from Nepal, from a hotel in New Delhi’s Paharganj area on July 31 night. The girls are said to have been trafficked from Nepal on the pretext of being offered job opportunities and were being sent off to Saudi and even Sri Lanka, according to DCW Chairperson Swati Maliwal.

DCW chairperson added, “They were kept in the hotel on the pretext of job offers while they were being trafficked to the Gulf countries. Some girls have already been sent to Sri Lanka and we’re not able to contact them.”

Maliwal added that Nepal Embassy was being contacted for repatriation of the rescued girls. Nearly 68 passports were recovered from the place where the women were kept, out of which seven were Indian passports.

In the last one week, DCW rescued 73 girls who were trafficked from various areas in the national capital.

The incidents come at a time when Lok Sabha has passed the anti-trafficking bill. The Trafficking of Persons (Prevention, Protection, and Rehabilitation) Bill, 2018, currently awaits the nod of the Rajya Sabha.

“Human trafficking is a borderless crime. Special crimes need special attention. How can we stay silent when women and children are sold as goods? Let us make this bill a reality today to protect and provide for the millions of victims who have suffered silently for years,” Maliwal said.

Aeromexico plane crashes in Mexico after takeoff, everyone on board survives

An Aeromexico plane with 101 people on board crashed soon after take-off in Durango on Tuesday afternoon.

“All the passengers and crew members survived the crash. However, several people were injured in the accident”, said, Mexican officials.

Aeromexico Flight AM2431 was heading to Mexico City with 97 passengers and four crew members when it crashed shortly after taking off at the General Guadalupe Victoria International Airport about 4:00 pm on Tuesday (local time).

“We confirm that there were no fatalities in the accident of flight AM2431,” Durango Governor Jose Aispuro said on Twitter. 

At a press conference, Durango State Governor Jose Aispuro said, “the plane had tried to abort take-off due to bad weather but were not able to and crashed at the end of the runway”.

Chennai: Rahul Gandhi visits DMK Chief M Karunanidhi at Kauvery hospital

Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday visited DMK Chief M Karunanidhi at Kauvery hospital in Chennai.

Speaking to reporters after visiting Karunanidhi, he said: “I have come to see Karunanidhiji, he is fine and stable, I am very happy to see that he is doing well. He is a strong person and has a spirit of Tamil Nadu in him”.

Congress president said his mother Sonia Gandhi has sent her best wishes to Karunanidhi and his family.” Congress party has a long-standing relationship with DMK chief Mr. Karunanidhi”, he further added.

“I visited Kalaignar today. Wonderful to see that the Tamil fighting spirit that has endeared him to millions, is still strong! I join his fans all around the world, his well-wishers and his family, in wishing him a speedy recovery”, tweeted Rahul Gandhi.

Karunanidhi, who was suffering from fever due to urinary tract infection was admitted to Kauvery Hospital on Saturday.

SC dismisses review plea seeking probe into CBI Judge Loya’s death

The Supreme Court (SC) on July 31 dismissed a review petition seeking probe into Central Bureau of Investigation Judge Brijgopal Harkishan Loya’s death on December 1, 2014.

SC bench comprising of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and justices D Y Chandrachud and A M Khanwilkar did not find any reason to reconsider apex court’s April 19 verdict in the case which says that Judge Loya died of natural causes.

SC was hearing a petition filed by the Bombay Lawyers Association alleging that Judge Loya died under mysterious circumstances.

SC bench said, “We have carefully gone through the review petition and the connected papers, but we see no reason to interfere with the order impugned. The review petition is, accordingly, dismissed.”

SC even accused the petitioners of trying to “malign the judiciary” and called their petitions “scandalous and amounting to criminal contempt”.

Loya, who was handling the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, in which Bharatiya Janata Party President Amit Shah was an accused, had died of cardiac arrest while attending the wedding of a colleague’s daughter in Nagpur.

Whatsapp rolls out group calling feature between upto four people

WhatsApp On Tuesday announced its group calling feature for both voice and video for its 1.5 billion customers.

The group calling feature ropes up to four people simultaneously.

“You can make a group call with up to four people total – anytime and anywhere. Just start a one-on-one voice or video call and tap the new “add participant” button in the top right corner to add more contacts to the call”, A statement by WhatsApp.

WhatsApp users have enjoyed making voice and video calls over the last couple of years. Moreover, they spend over 2 billion minutes on calls per day.

“Group calls are always end-to-end encrypted, and we’ve designed calling to work reliably around the world in different network conditions. The feature is currently rolling out on the iPhone and Android versions of our app”, added by WhatsApp.

Assam NRC list: Apex Court asks centre to follow SOP in filing objections

The Supreme Court on July 31 observed that the process of filing objections by those 40 lakh persons whose names are not listed in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) draft list in Assam should be fair and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) should be applied.

A SC division bench headed by justice Ranjan Gogoi said that as per the rules the Centre should place the SOP before it by 16 August and that a local registrar has to give notice to those who have filed claims and objections and give them a reasonable opportunity for hearing in the same matter.

Justice Gogoi said, “We will see if it is fair or not. Then we will decide. If something needs to be done, we will do.”

“Everybody should get a fair opportunity considering the complexities and numbers, etc, involved. You (government) place it before us. If it is fair, we will approve. If not, we will disapprove. If there is anything missing, we will fill it,” Justice Gogoi addressed Attorney General K.K. Venugopal.

“You do what you want to do, then we will say. Our silence is neither agreement nor rejection nor assurance,” Apex court toldVenugopal.

Attorney General Venugopal, on the other hand, informed the court that the Ministry concerned is preparing the SOP to deal with claims and objections and to ensure a fair process. He also gave assurance to the SC that the SOP would be submitted to the court in mid-August.

NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela told the court that the claims and objections with regard to inclusion and exclusion in the NRC could be filed from 30 August to 28 September.

UK court asks for video of Jail where Vijay Mallya will be kept

The Westminster Magistrate’s Court today asked the Indian government to submit videos of the prison where Vijay Mallya, former liquor baron wanted for fraud, will be kept.

“The court would not go with the photographs which were provided by Indian Officials,” said by Judge Emma Arbouthnot who is hearing Vijay Mallya’s extradition case.

The Court asked the Indian officials to submit video evidence by September 12 to alleviate the concern of human rights’ violation raised by the defense counsel.

However, on reaching Westminster court today, Mallya said that the accusations of money laundering and stealing money were “completely false”.

The 62-year-old liquor baron has been living in London after fleeing from India in the year 2016, Despite summons from Indian courts to appear before them for probationary in numerous cases. He is fighting extradition to India on money laundering and fraud charges.

Imran Khan considering inviting Narendra Modi for his oath ceremony

Imran Khan, leader of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), is considering inviting the leaders of the SAARC countries including Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his oath ceremony which will be held on 11th August, three days before Pakistan’s independence day that falls on August 14.

According to reports, Khan said, Modi’s telephone call to congratulate him on his victory in the 2018 polls is a welcoming sign to start a new chapter between the two countries.

“If they take one step towards us, we will take two, but at least need a start”, he said.

Fawad Chaudhry, a spokesperson for Khan’s party, also did not rule out inviting Modi to the swearing-in ceremony.

BSF, Assam rifles deployed to stop further infiltration of illegal Rohingyas: Home Minister

Home Minister Rajnath Singh on July 31 informed Lok Sabha that the Border Security Force and Assam Rifles have been deployed to stop further infiltration of illegal Rohingyas to country.

While replying to the National Register of Citizens (NRC) issue in the Parliament, Home Minister Singh said, “Border Security Force and Assam Rifles are deployed to stop further infiltration of Rohingyas. The centre has issued an advisory to states to monitor those who have already come and kept them at one place and not let them spread. States also have the right to deport them.”

While speaking during the monsoon session Singh added, “Once we get the exact data on NRC, “We will give it to the MEA and the MEA along with the coordination with the Myanmar government will take action on the deportation of Rohingyas.”

Giving a befitting reply to Home Minister Trinamool Congress (TMC)’s Sugata Bose said, “External Affairs Ministry is conducting ‘operation insaniyat’ for Rohingyas in Bangladesh. There are 40,000 Rohingyas in India, will we show insaniyat for only those who are in Bangladesh? “

Terming Bose’s statement “unfortunate”, Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju said, “This is an unfortunate statement by him(TMC’s Sugata Bose). India is probably the only country which has adopted such a soft approach to refugees. We also told Myanmar that we are ready to assist them in providing facilities to Rohingyas when they return.”
